Sun Devil Women's Golf 2022-23 Season RecapSun Devil Women's Golf 2022-23 Season Recap
Sun Devil Women's Golf provided several memorable moments during the 2022-23 season. Take a look back at some of the top highlights from another successful campaign in Tempe.

HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL
Sun Devil Athletics was thrilled to extend four of its head coaches over the 2022 Christmas holiday, including Women's Golf Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye. Recently wrapping up her eighth year with ASU, Farr-Kaye has been extended through the 2027-28 athletic calendar. She completed the trifecta in 2017, becoming the first individual in NCAA history to win a National Championship as a player, assistant coach, and head coach at the same school.

ASHLEY ALL-AMERICAN
Sun Devil Women's Golf junior Ashley Menne was named a Second Team All-American, the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) announced following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Menne was one of only 15 female collegiate golfers at the Division I level to earn this prestigious honor. After two seasons of receiving honorable mention distinction, Menne claims a spot on the Second Team, recognized as one of the Top-30 golfers in the nation by the coaches.

By virtue of her selection to the WGCA All-American Second Team, Ashley Menne has now been named an All-American in each of her first three seasons in Tempe. She becomes the first Sun Devil since Olivia Mehaffey (2017-21) to earn All-American honors in each of her first three years. Next year, Menne could join some exclusive company. Should she earn a fourth All-American distinction, she would become only the fourth four-time All-American in program history. Only legendary figures Olivia Mehaffey, Azahara Munoz (2006-09) and Kellee Booth (1995-98) have accomplished this impressive feat.

PAC-12 ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS
Arizona State landed four individuals on the Pac-12 All-Conference teams, tied with Oregon and USC for the most selections of any school. Ashley Menne and Grace Summerhays were two of only 12 golfers named to the First Team in arguably the deepest conference in the country. Freshmen Paula Schulz-Hanssen and Beth Coulter earned two of only eight spots on the Honorable Mention team, meaning 4 of the 20 possible All-Conference picks were Sun Devils.

GRACE IS US OPEN BOUND
Sun Devil Women's Golf sophomore Grace Summerhays has qualified for the 2023 U.S. Women's Open. By virtue of her second place finish at the Gainey Ranch Golf Club U.S. Women's Open qualifier in Scottsdale, Summerhays is one of two amateurs to advance to the LPGA Major Championship. The Sun Devil standout was able to earn one of the coveted spots after battling a 70-golfer field full of the top amateurs and even several professional competitors.

Summerhays finished with a 140 (-4) in the two-round qualifier, three strokes ahead of third-place. Summerhays is one of 20 amateurs in the world to have qualified for this event so far. The 78th edition of the U.S. Women's Open will be Summerhays' first appearance in a LPGA Major Championship. It takes place July 6-9 at iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links in California.

PALMER CUP PARTICIPANTS
There will be heavy representation of Sun Devil Golf at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup, taking place June 8-10 at Laurel Valley Golf Club. For the sixth consecutive year, Sun Devil Golf will be featured at the premier international amateur event featuring only collegiate golfers. As was the case in 2022, both the men's and women's programs will send participants to compete in the Palmer Cup's return to the United States. Sun Devil Women's Golf's Ashley Menne will represent Team USA along with Sun Devil Men's Golf's Preston Summerhays.

MENNE AT ANWA
Sun Devil Women's Golf standout Ashley Menne represented Arizona State on an International stage at the Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA). The 2023 edition once again gave female amateur golfers the opportunity to play the iconic Augusta National Golf Course. This is the second consecutive year Menne qualified for this prestigious event, doing so based on her standing in the United States amateur rankings.

RALEIGH REGIONAL
The 2022-23 Sun Devil Women's Golf season came to an end at the Raleigh Regional. In need of a Top-5 finish after three days at the Raleigh Regional, Arizona State (+10/874) finished in seventh. Ashley Menne and Grace Summerhays each delivered Top-15 performances, but it wasn't enough to help the Maroon & Gold advance. Arizona State's run of five consecutive NCAA Championship appearances has been snapped. They were one of only five programs that could make this claim, joined in the exclusive club by Florida State, Stanford, Texas, and USC. The last time Sun Devil Women's Golf missed the NCAA Championship was 2016. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team immediately responded by winning the 2017 National Championship at Rich Harvest Farms in Illinois the following year.

40TH NCAA APPEARANCE
Sun Devil Women's Golf made their 30th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, competing every year since the Regional postseason format was created in 1993. ASU is one of just eight Division I Women's Golf teams to earn a spot at NCAA Regionals every year for the past 30 seasons. This puts the program in elite company, as only the following teams have qualified for a regional each time since the postseason format changed: Arizona StateArizonaDukeFloridaStanfordUSCUCLAWake Forest

The Sun Devils have has not missed a NCAA postseason since 1991. The program earned their 31st straight NCAA postseason berth and will be making its 40th overall appearance.

PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP
On the final day of the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships, host No. 11 Sun Devil Women's Golf finished in 5th place after accumulating a 871 (+7) at Papago Golf Club. Freshman Beth Coulter delivered an incredible final round 68 (-4) to finish 5-under for the week and earn second place in her Pac-12 Championship debut. She is the program's highest finisher since Olivia Mehaffey won the 2019 Pac-12 Championship in a playoff. Coulter's first career Top-5 finish couldn't have come at a better time, as she came through for Missy Farr-Kaye's team under pressure.

Sun Devil Women's Golf continues an incredible streak dating back to 2001. The program has now had a Top-5 finisher in 20 of the last 21 Pac-12 Championships and an individual land in the Top-10 at each of the last 21 conference championships.

SILVERADO SHOWDOWN
Sun Devil Women's Golf completed the regular season at the Silverado Showdown. Arizona State finished tied for sixth with No. 8 Oregon in the 17-team tournament. Playing without two-time All-American Ashley Menne who was competing in the Augusta National Women's Amateur, Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team held their own in a competitive field.

Several Sun Devils stepped up in Menne's absence, led by Grace Summerhays. Summerhays put together her second consecutive Top-10 effort, finishing in sixth place at the Silverado Showdown. She moved up nine spots after shooting a 71 (-1), one of the five best rounds on the final day. Paula Schulz-Hanssen finished in the Top-15 as well (T-15th) during a four-event stretch in which she finished T-16th or better.

PING/ASU INVITATIONAL
Sun Devil Women's Golf finished second at the 2023 PING/ASU Invitational hosted at Papago Golf Club. In the 50th edition of the event, Sun Devils could be found all over the top of the leaderboard, as four of the Top-11 finishers were representatives of the Maroon & Gold. Arizona State (-4/860) finished only behind No. 23 Northwestern for the team title, as both squads beat out three Top-10 teams.

Ashley Menne led the way for the Sun Devils, earning a tie for sixth place, her second straight Top-10 finish at the PING/ASU Invitational. Not far behind her was Grace Summerhays, who made a late push that allowed her to shoot up the leaderboard. She elevated 34 spots by the end of the day, climbing into the Top-10 as she tied for ninth. Summerhays' 67 (-5) was the best round of any golfer on the final day. Freshmen duo Beth Coulter and Paula Schulz-Hanssen showed no effects from the pressure of their first home tournament, as they each finished in a tie for 11th.

CACTUS CUP
Arizona State hosted the first-ever Cactus Cup at Papago Golf Club. The event pitted four of the Top-11 teams in the nation against each other in a Match Play format. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team finished in second place by recording 9.5 points and winning nine matches, totals that were both just behind eventual Match Play participant Texas. They finished the Cactus Cup in impressive fashion, knocking off previously undefeated Texas. After dropping the opening two matches, Arizona State won the final four matches to secure the overall victory against the Longhorns 4-2.

Amanda Linner led the way individually, one of only three golfers to go 3-0 at the Cactus Cup. Joining her in securing victories today to help ASU beat Texas were Grace Summerhays and Calynne Rohsholt, who each moved to 2-1 at the event.

DARIUS RUCKER INTERCOLLEGIATE
Sun Devil Women's Golf put the finishing touches on a sixth-place finish at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Arizona State represented themselves well on national television as a part of the only televised regular season women's collegiate golf tournament on GOLF Channel. At an event featuring 16 of the Top-46 and 14 of the Top-32 teams in the latest Golfstat rankings, Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team finished in sixth.

Three Sun Devils finished in the Top-25 of the individual race, led by Ashley Menne. Menne had the best round of any Sun Devil throughout the three days, delivering a 69 (-2) in the third round. She made a jump up the standings for the second consecutive day, eventually finishing in a tie for 13th. Not far behind was freshman Paula Schulz-Hanssen, who continued her strong play by finishing tied for 16th. Fellow freshman Beth Coulter was the third Sun Devil in the Top-25 in a field that boasted 23 of the Top-52 and 41 of the Top-100 golfers in the latest Golfstat rankings.

NEXUS COLLEGIATE
Arizona State enjoyed an excellent performance at the Nexus Collegiate at Albany Golf Course. Arizona State beat out five Top-25 teams to earn a third-place finish at one of the top events of the Spring. The only two teams to finish ahead of ASU were No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 9 LSU. A big reason for their success was a balanced effort from all five Sun Devils, as each counting golfer finishing tied for 21st or better. The Maroon & Gold solidified their position in third-place by delivering the second-best round of the final day (293).

Leading the way for Arizona State was Paula Schulz-Hanssen and Grace Summerhays, who each finished tied for fourth. The finish is even more impressive when you consider it was in a field with 20 of the Top-90 and 13 of the Top-50 golfers. Amanda Linner joined them in the Top-20 (T-18th), while Beth Coulter and Ashley Menne ended up just outside the Top-20 (T-21st). Arizona State was one of two teams to not have a counting golfer finish outside the Top-25, an indication of the team effort.

MATCH IN THE DESERT
Sun Devil Women's Golf completed their second event of the Spring campaign, putting together an impressive showing at the Match in the Desert. Arizona State (-11/277) overcame cold weather and a frost delay, maintaining their focus on their way to delivering a spectacular round in their home state. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team has shown no signs of rust after a long semester break, starting the Spring extremely strong.

The story of the event was the efforts of junior Ashley Menne, who was excellent right from the start. A birdie on her first hole set the tone for what would become an eight-birdie round, matching a career-low 65 (-7) in the process. She was named Co-Champion of the event after finishing tied with UCLA's Caroline Canales. This is Menne's first individual championship as a Sun Devil and seventh career Top-10 finish. The 65 is tied for the fourth-lowest score in program history, as Menne matched her own historic 2021 NCAA Championship third round in the school record book.

VS. VANDERBILT/DENVER
Sun Devil Women's Golf opened the Spring portion of the 2023 campaign with an impressive performance. Arizona State defeated No. 19 Vanderbilt and Denver in the first ever match play event taking place at Whirlwind Golf Club (Cattail Course). Six Sun Devils got the chance to compete in the state of Arizona for the first time, representing the Maroon & Gold.

The Sun Devils showed little signs of rust after the long break, taking care of business in their first chance back out on the course since November. They defeated Denver 17.5.-0.5, while simultaneously capturing the match with Vanderbilt by a final mark of 14-4. The three teams played in six pairings, with each golfer competing against two other individuals in each match. Arizona State won the most matches at the event by far, making them the winners of this one-of-a-kind event.

HISTORY MADE
Sun Devil Women's Golf made history, setting a new record in the first round of the Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club. Arizona State jumped out to a lead as a team thanks to a 275 (-17), the lowest 18 hole score vs. par in program history. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team had the perfect approach to the par-73 course, breaking a record held by the 2017 National Championship team. The Maroon & Gold had 27 birdies to jump out to the team lead.

Ashley Menne led the way with a historic performance of her own, adding another record to her growing resume as a Sun Devil. Menne matched herself in shooting the third-lowest 18 hole score vs. par in program history, carding a 66 (-7) on her way to earning a tie for the lead after the first 18 holes. Menne paced the Sun Devils, who used a balanced effort to prove they belong in the discussion as one of the best teams in the Pac-12 Conference.

Beth Coulter and Grace Summerhays each delivered masterful performances in support of Menne, allowing Arizona State to build a solid lead in the team standings. They are both tied for fifth after finishing with a 68 (-5), combining for a total of 13 birdies. Coulter and Summerhays sit just two strokes back of their teammate Menne for the overall lead, as three of the Top-5 in the individual standings are Sun Devils. Calynne Rosholt ensured it would be a program record with several clutch moments on the course, including an eagle on the par four first hole.

STANFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE
Sun Devil Women's Golf continued their climb up the team standings on the final day of the Stanford Intercollegiate. Arizona State (+1/285) had their best round of the weekend and the fifth-best score of the day on Sunday. Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's team started the day in 13th position, but moved up all the way to finish in ninth place. The Maroon & Gold improved each day at the Stanford Intercollegiate, leading to a fantastic effort in the final round. ASU led the field with 183 pars, playing consistently over the final two days.

The play of Amanda Linner was a big reason for the move, as she had one of the best rounds of her collegiate career. She shot a 69 (-2), the lowest round of any Sun Devil on the weekend.

WINDY CITY CLASSIC
Arizona State (+27/891) saved their best round for last, firing a 291 (+3) to move from seventh place into a tie for fourth on the final day of the Windy City Classic. A pair of sophomores led the charge for the Sun Devils, as Calynne Rosholt and Grace Summerhays were excellent on the final day. They both delivered 71's (-1) and set the tone with strong play on the front nine, helping ASU make a jump. Rosholt finished tied for 12th and Summerhays tied for 19th, with both putting together a Top-20 performance.

ANNIKA INTERCOLLEGIATE
Sun Devil Women's Golf moved up a spot as they completed the final day of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate at Royal Golf Club. Arizona State's (+12/876) improved play from yesterday carried over into today, as they finished strong allowing them to climb into eighth place. Leading the way was the duo of Ashley Menne and Calynne Rosholt, who each finished in the Top-20. Grace Summerhays and Beth Coulter also found themselves in the top-half of a loaded field by the end of the day. The 291 (+3) from the Maroon & Gold was tied for the sixth-best round of the day.

Ashley Menne (+3/219) remained consistent all week, earning a tie for 19th which matched Calynne Rosholt for the best finish. Rosholt (+3/219) fired a 70 (-2) to move up 18 spots on the leaderboard with the lowest round by a Sun Devil today. Grace Summerhays was not far behind, as her 71 (-1) helped her jump 11 spots and into a tie for 26th. Beth Coulter showed flashes of brillance in her collegiate debut on her way to finishing tied for 29th. Paula Schulz-Hanssen had four birdies on the day as she finished her first collegiate tournament with seven birdies.

Sun Devil Women's Golfer Head Coach and Arizona golf legend Missy Farr-Kaye has been inducted into the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame. The Arizona Golf Hall of Fame Committee selected four new inductees to the Hall of Fame, featuring three modern candidates and one representative from the Legacy Division. Missy Farr-Kaye is part of a decorated 2022 class that includes fellow Sun Devil Women's Golfer Geri Cavanaugh, industry leader and major supporter of Arizona State Golf Del Cochran, as well as Rock and Roll legend and philanthropist Alice Cooper. Her success as a player, impact as a coach, and contributions as a member of the golf community made Farr-Kaye an ideal candidate for this honor.

THANK YOU COACH ESTILL
After seven extremely successful seasons as a member of the coaching staff of her alma mater, Sun Devil Women's Golf Associate Head Coach Michelle Estill has announced her retirement from Arizona State. An Assistant Coach of the 2017 National Championship team, Estill has been an integral part of maintaining the elite status of the Sun Devil Women's Golf program.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity Coach Missy Farr-Kaye and Arizona State University has given me for the last seven years," Estill reflected. "I bleed Maroon and Gold and will be a Sun Devil for Life. I feel fortunate to be a part of the tradition and excellence of the Sun Devil Women's Golf program and work in this amazing athletic department. I have learned so much about coaching under the leadership of Coach Farr-Kaye, but more importantly, she's helped me grow as a person. I'm thankful for all the student-athletes who let me be a part of their journey. They had an extremely positive impact on my life. I made some wonderful memories that I will cherish forever."

PAC-12 GOLFERS OF THE WEEK
The conference tweaked it's in-season honors, giving out a Pac-12 Golfer of the Week starting in January in place of a Golfer of the Month. A Sun Devil took home Pac-12 Golfer of the Week on two occasions, with Amanda Linner (3/21) and Ashley Menne (3/28) claiming the award in back-to-back weeks. In the Farr-Kaye era, a Sun Devil has won Pac-12 Golfer of the Week/Month eight times.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Grace Summerhays earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team. The Communications major has maintained a 4.0 GPA during her sophomore season, leading by example on and off the course.
