Sun Devil Alumni Working in Sun Devil Athletics Through The Years Opens in a new window
Labor Day List: ASU Alumni in Sun Devil AthleticsLabor Day List: ASU Alumni in Sun Devil Athletics
Katie MacCrory
TEMPE, Ariz. – Tempe, Ariz. - Once you become a Sun Devil, you're a Sun Devil for life.

On Labor day, we at Sun Devil Athletics like to highlight employees who've earned their college degree and now work in the Sun Devil family.

From former student-athletes who represented the maroon and gold on the field to national championship coaches to students who came back due to their love for the school, Sun Devil Athletics takes pride in hiring alumni.

DID YOU KNOW? Six Sun Devil head coaches have earned their degrees at Arizona State.
Men's Golf/Matt Thurmond--'22 MALM (Master of Applied Leadership and Management)
Water Polo/Petra Pardi--'15 BA in psychology
Baseball/Willie Bloomquist--'01 BS in management
Hockey/Greg Powers--'99 BS in broadcast journalism
Women's Golf/Missy Farr-Kaye--'90 BA in organizational communication
Wrestling/Zeke Jones--'90 BS in corporate financial management

  Dale Ryndak
Ryndak, who pitched from 2015-2018, compiled a 37-20 record and amassed over 213 strikeouts. In her junior season, she threw the seventh perfect game in Sun Devil history against UTEP. In 2018 she helped lead the team to a Women's College World Series appearance. Now finished with her career, Ryndak is the team lead in Ticket Sales and Retention.

"The fact that my employer is my alma mater makes the selling portion of the job fairly simple. I have a built-in affinity to the school from playing here and getting fans to donate and purchase products for a large sum is for a good cause since that money is going to the student-athlete's education."

"I never really left ASU. I took my position right after graduating from my undergrad to help subsidize my Master's program tuition. I ended up getting promoted over time and kept furthering my professional career here since I was given the opportunity to do so."

"When you are in the thick of your sports career, it is easy to lose sight of the goal at hand which is graduating with a degree and winning is just a cherry on top of the experience. I am appreciative of the time and effort my coaches and administrators put into my teams since the hard work on the back end seldom gets noticed. We are surrounded by incredibly selfless people simply because they enjoy working in sports and have a love for ASU. It is incredibly rare to find that type of attraction in other workplaces."

Marcus Williams
Williams was a member of the Sun Devil football team that reached the Rose Bowl in 1997. A graduate of McClintock High School, Williams was an All-Pac-10 Punter during his time in Tempe. After his career, Williams spent time in two training camps with the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots and played with the Rhein Fire in the NFL Europe, along with a quick stint with the XFL's, Las Vegas Outlaws. After his playing career was over, Williams worked his way up in the Arizona High School Prep scene, working his way up to Assistant Principal/ Athletic Director at Perry High School. Now back in Tempe, Williams is the sport administrator for the track and field, cross country, and women's soccer programs.

"When you have an opportunity to come back to an amazing university, like ASU, and work in the athletic department that helped mold and shape my life, it's a dream come true. I'm literally living the dream."

"It goes back to Sun Devils for life, right? That's a true meaning that echoes through this building. Jean Boyd, we were teammates back in '93. We had a friendship as far as the Brotherhood on the team. But he was a senior, I was an incoming freshman. And I was a kicker, he was on the defensive side. So we didn't really interact much but as I got through and started being more connected with ASU, the connections were there. Mike Chizmar was here when I was here, and Mark Brand who recently retired was here. Doug Tammaro, Bill Kennedy, and Mark Zimmer were all here when I was here. These people make ASU a special place. They truly want what's best for the university and what's best for our student-athletes."

Denzel Burrell
Prior to earning his Master's degree at ASU, Burrell completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Virginia where he also played football. Now at ASU, Burrell works in the Office of Student-Athlete Development working with Women's Tennis, Men's Track & Field/Cross Country, and Wrestling.

"I decided to come to ASU because I had heard about many untraditional things they were doing from a university perspective and how they provide educational opportunities to all people. I grew up on the east coast and went to school on the east so I wanted to experience something different and thought that ASU would be the perfect place. I knew a few people who lived in the area and worked at the university and had great things to say so that really sealed the decision for me."

"It feels amazing to work at this institution because of the people. I think the people who make up any job experience and those who I have had the fortune to work with here at ASU has been phenomenal. I have had tremendous leaders and mentors to gain experience and get advice from and work with the wonderful coaching staff and an amazing set of students who continue to progress towards greater successes than the year before."

"College athletics is a high-energy environment and those within Sun Devil athletics certainly bring it. I get up every day excited to go to work, ready to address any issues or chaos that may occur, and I go home at night believing that I was able to make a difference in someone's life."

Pauletta Riggs
Riggs earned her degree in 2015 in Interdisciplinary Studies and has called Tempe her home for over 20 years now. At Sun Devil Athletics, she's currently the Senior Human Resources Data Analyst.

"I began working here as a student worker and never left. I've been at ASU for about 23 years now. It's a great feeling to work at the school I graduated from. My siblings are all ASU grads and they especially love that I work in the athletic department because I take them to ASU sporting events for free. For me, it's my coworkers, especially my supervisors. I've had three supervisors since I've been here and all were great people to be around."

Tyson Roberts
Tyson is a unique Sun Devil. He has not one, not two, not three, but FOUR degrees from ASU. He earned his first two degrees as a double major in undergrad, majoring in History and Sociology. Then in 2015, he received his first Master's degree, this time in Liberal Arts. His most recent degree came in 2017 when he earned a Master's of Education in Higher and Postsecondary Education. He's not quite done yet as he's preparing to go back to school for his Ph.D.Currently, Roberts is the Ticket Office Assistant Manager for gymnastics, softball, and volleyball.

"I came to ASU for a number of reasons. The first one was that I had some pretty good scholarship opportunities that I could have utilized anywhere, but ASU gave me the best options to use them when I was coming to campus. I also went to high school about 20 minutes away, so going to ASU was close to friends and family. Also, I have a twin sister and she was coming to ASU, it would have felt weird being somewhere that she wasn't."

"It's amazing to work where I went to school. Being that I went here, I started developing a love for ASU, Sparky, and all of the traditions that were before me. I feel like I have been able to see both sides of the school, knowing what it was like to be a student and attend games, but now, getting to see the next generation go through those same events, it's fun!"

"ASU is special because of the people I work with day in and day out. I can honestly say that some of my best friends are people that I've worked with during my time here. I think the overall culture and the fact that you have people surrounding you and wanting the best for you, is what makes this place special. Everyone here wants to help and see you succeed, and we'll do whatever it takes for each other, to make sure we all succeed."

"I've always been someone who enjoyed learning and challenging myself. When I had the opportunity in undergrad to throw an extra degree on, I figured why not? Then when I was doing my Master's, I was just interested in multiple programs, so I just went for it. My learning isn't over, the Ph.D. is next!"

In honor of Labor Day, we recognize the employees working in Sun Devil Athletics that graduated from Arizona State. On this list you will see individuals who attended ASU as an undergrad or earned a Master's degree.
