A former Sun Devil Football student-athlete and McClintock High School graduate, Marcus Williams joined the Arizona State Sun Devils athletic department staff in spring 2021.
Marcus currently serves as a senior associate athletic director, overseeing 18 of the 26 athletic programs, including Football, Women’s Basketball, Softball, Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, Gymnastics, Water Polo, Lacrosse and Triathlon. In addition to sport oversight, he provides leadership for Sports Performance, including Strength and Conditioning and Nutrition.
A native of Arizona, Marcus earned his bachelor’s degree in justice studies from Arizona State University, where he was a member of the 1997 Rose Bowl and Sun Bowl teams. As a senior, he earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors as a punter.
Following graduation, Marcus pursued a professional football career, participating in training camps with the Arizona Cardinals and New England Patriots. He also competed internationally with Rhein Fire and spent time with the Las Vegas Outlaws.
After two years pursuing opportunities in professional football, Marcus transitioned into education and coaching at Marcos de Niza High School, where he taught special education and coached both basketball and football. During this time, he earned two master’s degrees—one in Special Education and another in Educational Leadership.
Marcus spent seven years at Marcos de Niza before becoming the inaugural Assistant Principal/Athletic Director at Williams Field High School in the Higley Unified School District in 2007. He later served in the same role at Perry High School in the Chandler Unified School District.
A Certified Master Athletic Administrator, Marcus has served on numerous committees at the local, state, and national levels. His leadership roles include serving as the 6A Conference Premier Region Chair and as a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Board of Directors.
In recognition of his impact, Marcus received the AIAAA State Award of Merit for his significant contributions to athletics in Arizona, as well as the AIAAA Distinguished Service Award for his work in athletic administration.
Marcus resides in Chandler, Arizona, with his wife, Jamie. His daughter, Mikaila, is a graduate of the Fulton Schools of Engineering in Construction Engineering. He has also volunteered with the Chandler Fire Department as a Crisis Responder for nine years prior to coming to ASU.
