Sun Devil Athletics
Welcome to ASU, Leon Marchand and Murphy Cassone, to name two off the top.

It was like old times for Turner Washington, Jorinde van Klinken, Cliff English's triathlon squad and Zeke Jones and the wrestling team.

Softball got it done in the Pac-12 in convincing fashion and gymnastics grabbed a share of a league crown, while men's golf came as close as you can to winning a national title. Swimming is officially back after Coach Bowman used a "redshirt" year.

We said thank you to a few legends who are retiring, and hosted the NCAA Golf Championships for the second of three straight years.

Here is a look at all the Sun Devil team's seasons with quick recaps and some tweets and numbers to remember the 2021-22 season.

For the first time ever we lead the Pac-12 with an all-time high multiyear APR score ??

In 2020-21 we attained the highest single year score in school history ??

MEN'S SWIMMING: Bob Bowman -- to quote SwimSwam -- "..finished in 21st place in 2019. The 2020 championships were canceled. In 2020-21, the squad took a redshirt year. The squad came back in 2021-22 and finished sixth. Through all that, Bowman and his staff managed to keep his team together, managed to recruit the best swimmer in the NCAA and tie the programs best finish at the NCAA. That is just too good to be ignored."

NAMED HEAD COACH JUNE 11, 2021
26-31 OVERALL/13-17 PAC-12 (8th)

Six Sun Devils were drafted, the most since 2015, in its first season under head coach Willie Bloomquist as ASU advanced to the Pac-12 Tournament in Scottsdale. Nate Baez was named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball News and Jacob Tobias earned Freshman All-American recognition from the same outlet. The duo also earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors. Joe Lampe, Conor Davis, Ryan Campos, Brock Peery and Sean McLain earned honorable mention all-conference honors. ASU had its most individual Player/Pitcher of the Week honors since 2013 as Ethan Long, Sean McLain, Nate Baez and Adam Tulloch were all recognized over the course of the season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
BOBBY HURLEY/SEVENTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH APRIL 8, 2015
14-17 OVERALL/10-10 PAC-12 (8th)

Team started 7-15 and 2-7 in the Pac-12 but won seven of eight to close the regular season and notch .500 Pac-12 record. Jalen Graham earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors, as the Sun Devils posted sweeps over Oregon (first time since 2010-11) and Utah (first time since Utes joined Pac-12) and swept the Mountain road trip for the first time. ASU topped No. 3 UCLA 87-84 in triple overtime on Feb. 5, its third win over a  top-three team under Bobby Hurley. ASU held opponents to .400 shooting, its best defensive effort since 1971-72 and third-best in school history. ASU's 81-57 win over Oregon (Feb. 17) and 73-53 win over Oregon State (Feb. 19) marked its first back-to-back 20-point Pac-12 wins for the first time since January of 2003, when it beat Washington by 32 (Jan. 9) and Washington State by 41 (Jan. 11). Kimani Lawrence set the school record for games played with 136.

CHARLI TURNER THORNE/25TH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH JUNE 21, 1996

12-14/4-8 IN PAC-12 (9th)
CLICK HERE FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL YEAR-BY-YEAR AND COACHING RECORDS
ASU entered Pac-12 play having won six of seven games after a 2-4 start. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, for the second straight season, their ability to consistently compete in conference play was impacted by starts and stops caused by COVID-19. ASU was the last team to start league played after having its first six Pac-12 contests postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. The Sun Devils would go on to play the second-fewest number of conference games (12) of any team in the league. ASU opened its conference schedule with a win over No. 22 Colorado. A three-game winning streak in early February – included wins over No. 19 Oregon and No. 6 Arizona – had the Sun Devils in position to make the NCAA Tournament with a strong finish. A four-point loss at Arizona – a win would have given ASU a sweep of the season series – was the first of six-straight, single-digit losses (avg. loss of 5.0 ppg) to end the season. Boise State transfer guard Jade Loville (2022 All-Pac-12 selection) finished second in the Pac-12 in scoring (16.6 ppg) and led the league in scoring in conference games (18.6 ppg). Loville became the fourth Sun Devil to score 30 or more points since 2000 after accounting for 34 points in ASU's win at San Diego (Dec. 18). She repeated the feat with 33 points in ASU's win over Oregon State (Feb. 4). On March 3, 2022, Charli Turner Thorne announced her retirement after 25 seasons as the program's head coach. The winningest coach in ASU women's basketball history and No. 2 all-time in career wins (488) by a Pac-12 coach, Turner Thorne oversaw the establishment of Sun Devil Women's Basketball as a perennial national power. Twice named Pac-12 Coach of the Year, Turner Thorne led ASU to 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, three Pac-12 championships (two regular season titles and the league's first tournament title in 2002) and the program's only two NCAA Elite Eight appearances. On March 27, 2022, Natasha Adair was introduced as the program's new coach. Adair – who brought 10 seasons of head coaching experience – came to ASU after five seasons at Delaware, where she compiled a 95-58 record (62.0 percent), including a 48-13 record her last two seasons. While at Delaware, the Blue Hens captured the program's third Colonial Athletic Association title. In 2022, she coached Delaware to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in nearly a decade.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
BRAD KEENAN/SIXTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH MAY 13, 2016

17-15/5-6 IN PAC-12 (4th at Pac-12s)
With six seasons now under his belt, head coach Brad Keenan pushed the program to a 17-15 record, the second-highest win total in ASU history. This season also eclipsed the century mark in program wins, now at 104 all-time. The Sand Devils earned five Pac-12 wins, the most in its seven years of conference play. Additionally, there was a five-dual win streak early in the year, which is tied for the second-longest streak in program history. ASU earned two ranked wins, both against in-state rival Arizona. The first came at home, the first day of duals in the new Sun Devil Beach Volleyball Facility. ASU edged out a 3-2 win over then-No. 13 Arizona. The second came in the Pac-12 Championships in a win-or–go-home situation. The Sun Devils won that dual 3-1 to match its best showing at the championships with fourth-place finish. A handful of Sand Devils made their mark in the record book after the 2022 season. Fifth-year senior Cierra Flood played in the No. 1 spot all season and increased her career win total to 64, good for second all-time. She and her partner junior Lexi Sweeney had a 13-17 record together. Sweeney moved up on the career win list as well, improving to 30 career wins to put her in 11th. The No. 1 duo of Flood and Sweeney made the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team for their efforts at the championship. They were the first ASU duo to do so since 2019. The win leaders this season were senior Maddy Salazar and sophomore Kate Fitzgerald, both earning 17 wins. Kylie Wickley and Taryn Ames were right behind their respective partners with their 16 wins in 2022.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
PATRICK HENNER/SECOND SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH OCTOBER. 8, 2020

PAC-12 FINISHES: MEN (7th) AND WOMEN (10th)
Squad sent 10 harriers to the NCAA Cross Country West Regionals at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif. Lena Lebrun was the first Sun Devil to pass the 1.5 mile mark in the women's 6k, and closed out the race with a time of 21:15.1, her new PR, after previously finishing with 21:52.1 at the 2019 Arturo Barrios Invite. In the men's 10k, three Sun Devils finished in the top 100, with Vincent Mauri placing the highest after recording a final time of 30:36.2, and a final placing of 39th. The Sun Devils placed 21st in the women's 6k, and 17th in the men's 10k to close out the season. The Sun Devil men were led by Vincent Mauri at the Pac-12 Championships, who finished in the top-25 in the 8K (24:45.7). Lena Lebrun rounded out the women's 6k with a time of 22:16.3 to place in the top-50.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOOTBALL
HERM EDWARDS/FOURTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH DEC. 4, 2017
8-5 OVERALL/6-3 PAC-12 SOUTH (T-2nd)

In Herm Edwards's fourth year, the Sun Devils got off to a great start going 5-1 and earned a bowl bid to the third-highest bowl slot in the Pac-12, the highest bowl finish since 2013. The Sun Devils secured their second eight-win season since 2014 and their third bowl birth, with big wins over USC, UCLA, and a fifth straight win over in Arizona, the longest streak for the Sun Devils since the early 1970s. Rachaad White controlled the offense, in the air and on the ground. White was the leading rusher with over 1,000 yards and helped an offense that rushed for 190 yards a game. Paving the way was a veteran offensive line, led by Kellen Diesch and Dohnovan West, where they both earned second-team All-Pac-12 honors. The defense allowed a conference low 20 points and 320 yards per game, as they ranked 13th in the nation. The defense was led by captains Chase Lucas, Kyle Soelle, and Darien Butler who were the main pieces in an imposing defense. Soelle led the team in total tackles, while Butler was a force in coverage and rushing the quarterback. Lucas was targeted the most of all Pac-12 corners with at least 250 snaps in coverage at 20% but was one of just four of those corners to not allow a touchdown on the year. Even with key players missing, the defense still shined due to their next-man-up mentality. An example of that would be walk-on freshman defensive lineman BJ Green, who led the team with five sacks.  Defensive lineman Tyler Johnson earned first-team All- Pac-12 honors after being the unsung hero of the defense. Eight Sun Devils were invited to the NFL Combine.

MEN'S GOLF
MATT THURMOND/SIXTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH JULY 25, 2016

NCAA FINISH: 2ND (LOST CHAMPIONSHIP TO TEXAS 3 & 2)
FINISHED 3RD IN PAC-12
The Sun Devils men's golf team took one step closer to its goal of its third NCAA Championship with its 2022 second-place finish, as it beat No. 1 ranked Oklahoma and defending NCAA Champion Pepperdine in match play before losing to Texas, 3 & 2, on June 1. It was the best finish for ASU since the 1996 team won the national title, fresh off a tie for third last year. ASU has had back-to-back finishes of third or better for the first time since Phil Mickelson led ASU to three straight top-three finishes. The Sun Devils finished fourth in the Golfstat poll and fifth in Golfweek. Getting to Grayhawk isn't easy, as eight teams ranked in the Golfstat top 30 after regional action had their season's end. Senior Mason Andersen  closed out his Sun Devil career by earning third-team PING GCAA All-America honors, while three teammates (Cameron Sisk, David Puig and Josele Ballester) earned honorable mention honors. It marked the second straight season -- last year was the first time since 2009 -- the program earned four GCAA All-Americans. Team advanced to the 2022 NCAA Championships at Grayhawk Golf Club in convincing fashion with a win at the Stockton Regional, and also won the Southwestern Invitational, the Isleworth Invitational and the Copper Cup. James Leow won the Thunderbird Collegiate, while David Puig won the Southwestern Invitational for the second straight year and Sisk the Maridoe Invitational.

WOMEN'S GOLF
MISSY FARR-KAYE/SEVENTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH JUNE 26, 2015
FINISHED 7TH IN PAC-12/9TH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Sun Devil Women's Golf put together another successful campaign in Head Coach Missy Farr-Kaye's seventh season in charge of her Alma Mater. Arizona State and The Thunderbirds hosted the NCAA Golf Championships for the second-straight year. The Maroon & Gold finished ninth at the 2022 NCAA Championships, narrowly missing a Match Play berth. Because of their efforts, Women's Golf accumulated 69 Directors' Cup points, the fifth-most of any Sun Devil Athletics program. ASU qualified for the NCAA Championships for the 37th time thanks to a second-place finish at the Stillwater Regional. Finished the season ranked No. 8 nationally. During the regular season, Arizona State won the Match in the Desert to start of the Spring. Later in the campaign, Farr-Kaye's squad protected home turf by winning the PING/ASU Invitational. They did so in record-breaking fashion, recording the lowest team score in program history. Leading the way was Alexandra Forsterling, who earned Individual Medalist honors. Also winning individually this year was Alessandra Fanali, who took home the title at the Silverado Showdown. Alexandra Forsterling was named a First Team All-American by both Golfweek and the WGCA. She finished the season as the No. 5-ranked golfer in the country according to Golfstat. Joining her in receiving All-American honors was Ashley Menne, who has now secured the distinction in each of her first two years with the program. Both individuals were also Pac-12 All-Conference honorees, two of four total for the Sun Devils. Calynne Rosholt and Alessandra Fanali also landed on the All-Conference team. Five members of the team were named WGCA Academic Scholars, recognizing their achievements in the classroom. The awards don't stop there, as five Sun Devils made the Pac-12 Academic Spring Honor Roll. Missy Farr-Kaye and Michelle Estill signed the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation according to Golfweek.

NCAA FINISH: 4th in second round of NCAA Norman Regional
It was another stand-out season for the Gym Devils as they won a share of the 2022 Pac-12 regular-season title for the first time ever and saw a lot of success individually and as a team along the way. Arizona State wrapped up the season ranked No. 22 on Road to Nationals. The team finished the season with an NQS of 196.905 and won a share of the Pac-12 regular season title for the first time ever. It was the second year in a row that the Gym Devils qualified to compete in the night session of the Pac-12 Championships. ASU finished its season scoring 196.000 or better in all but one of its meets throughout the 2022 season. The best team score came against UCLA on Feb. 20 with a 197.800, the seventh-highest team score in program history to beat the Bruins for the first time since 2001. The Gym Devils had three meets scoring 197.000 or better, the second season in a row doing so. Arizona State earned a win on the road at Arizona to clinch the Territorial Cup for the sixth year in a row.  Throughout the season, the Gym Devils achieved a lot of success in individual competition as there were 25 total event titles throughout the season and 45 scores reaching 9.900 or better. Scharf brought in more accolades in her junior season. She earned WCGA Regular Season All-America honors in the all-around, where she made the second team for her efforts this season. She now has three All-America nods to her name. She also received honors from the Pac-12 as well as being named to the All-Pac-12 First Team in the all-around, her second season in row doing so. During the season, she was the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-12 Coaches Choice of the Week in two different weeks. Freshman Alex Theodorou earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors for vault while being in the anchor spot in all but one meet. Rounding out the weekly awards this season is Emily White who was named Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week after her all-around performance against UCLA, where she had the highest all-around score for the Gym Devils since 2007.

HOCKEY
GREG POWERS/SEVENTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH NOV. 18, 2014
17-17-1 OVERALL

Squad boasted three of the top-10 scorers in the nation in Colin TheisenMatthew Kopperud and Josh Doan as ASU scored 116 goals in 35 games for a 3.31 goals per game average, ranked No. 11 in the country. ASU was quick to cash in on goal-scoring opportunities this season, notching seven goals within the first five minutes of play and finished the season with a top-15 power play team - the special teams group converted on the man-advantage 22.9 percent of opportunities. ASU recorded five-straight wins versus USCHO.com Top-20 opponents in 2021-22 for the first time in program history (the previous record for consecutive wins against ranked opponents was three-straight games). ASU swept No. 9 Cornell on Jan. 1-2, 2022 for the first sweep over a top-10 team since defeating No. 9 Quinnipiac in November 2019. The Sun Devils put on a clinic in game one against the Big Red - handing them just their second loss of the season. SOCCER
GRAHAM WINKWORTH/FIFTH SEASON
NAMED HEAD COACH NOV. 29, 2016
10-8-2 OVERALL/2-7-2 PAC-12 (10th/8 points)

After its 8-1 record in non-conference play, ASU earned a No. 15 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, its highest in program history. With 10 wins in 2021, Sun Devil Soccer has posted a double-digit win total twice (2018 and 2021) in the last four seasons and that does not include the 9-6-2 record that was good enough to earn the squad a berth in in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. Prior to 2018, ASU posted a double-digit win total twice in the previous 10 seasons. ASU was led by 2021 NCAA scoring leader Nicole Douglas, who earned Third-Team All-America honors and was one 13 players named to the All-Pac-12 First Team in 2021. Douglas, who became the first Sun Devil to earn All-America honors since 2002, set the single-season school records for goals (19) and points (45). She led the nation in goals (19), goals per game (0.95) and points per game (2.25). Douglas and fellow striker Olivia Nguyen (7 goals) combined for 26 of ASU's 42 goals. Although Douglas and Nguyen accounted for the majority of the goals, ASU has had 10 different players find the back of the net in 2021. Nguyen (17 points) finished second on the team in scoring. Midfielder Eva van Deursen set the school's single-season record with 10 assists. She also added three goals and came within a point (16) of tying Nguyen for second in scoring. Due to injuries, ASU had 22 different players in the starting lineup. Douglas and defender Callie Darst were the only two players who started all 20 games. After winning all five of its one-goal games in non-conference play, ASU was not as fortunate in Pac-12 competition as it went 1-6 in such games and also had a pair of ties. Defender Jayda Hylton-Pelaia was selected by the Chicago Red Stars with the 49th pick of the 2022 National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) College Draft.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
BOB BOWMAN/SIXTH SEASON (SEVENTH YEAR AT ASU/SIXTH SEASON)
NAMED HEAD COACH APRIL 24, 2015

NCAA FINISHES: MEN 6th/WOMEN 26th
The Sun Devils reaped the benefits of having an entire year to train during their redshirt season, racing with revamped intensity for the entire 2021-22 season. When UCLA came to town on November 6, it marked the first time in nearly 21 months that the Sun Devils last competed at home. A 2-0 start by the Women's team, with wins coming against Washington State and UCLA, propelled the Sun Devils to a No. 22 ranking. They balanced veteran leadership with young talent, led by redshirt seniors Emma Nordin, Erica Laning and Nora Deleske and redshirt sophomores Lindsay Looney and Jade Foelske. The Men's team opened their season on November with a 155.5-138.5 home loss to USC, but their potential was more than evident. Making his highly-anticipated Sun Devil debut, freshman Léon Marchand won each of the three events that he raced in -- the 200 IM, the 200 butterfly and the 200 backstroke. Redshirt senior Grant House added a pair of wins in the 100 and 200 free. The Sun Devils feasted at the NC State Invite weeks later, where they rewrote the school's record books. A total of 10 records were shattered, and Bowman's squad departed Greensboro with the kind of moxie that hinted something special was on the horizon. It parlayed into the Men's team's highest ranking in program history, when the CSCAA listed them at No. 6. In the final meet of the regular season, the Sun Devils ventured to in-state rival Arizona and split against the Wildcats; the No. 6 Men's team smacked No. 20 Arizona, 195-103, and it took the final swimming event of the afternoon to decide the Women team's 155-139 loss to the No. 23 Wildcats.

At the Pac-12 Championships, Erica Laning became the fourth woman of the Bowman era to become a conference champion (500 free) as the Sun Devils placed sixth. The Men's team placed third at the conference championship for their highest finish in 27 years, led by victories from Marchand (200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM) and House (200 free). The Women's team would go on to place 26th at the NCAA Championships weeks later, thanks to top-15 performances by Laning (200 free/15th, 500 free/13th), Nordin (500 free/13th) and Looney (200 fly/10th). The Men's team placed sixth at NCAAs for their best finish in 40 years, courtesy of a few record-breaking performances by Marchand. The freshman won the 200 IM and 200 breast. In his 200 IM victory, Marchand went 1:37.69 to set a new NCAA record. His efforts earned him the Pac-12 Men's Swimmer and Freshman of the Year. Bowman was also named SwimSwam's Coach of the Year.

For the first time since 2020, the Sun Devils have divers on the roster after the hiring of dive head coach Marc Briggs in August. Briggs brought in two transfers at the start of the spring, Thomas Wesche (GCU) and Zachory Lundgren (Hawaii). Briggs made quick work with Wesche and Lundgren, as the two qualified for the NCAA Zone E Championships in March.

Senior Domenika Turkovic and freshman Patricija Spaka, the team's top-ranked doubles team, were one of 32 duos selected to compete at the NCAA Doubles Championships after winning 10 of 14 matches throughout the regular season. Dubbed the "Super Seven," the 2022 Sun Devils began the spring with a bang, winning four of their first five. After a March lull that saw them drop four of five, they kicked it into gear once more, stringing together six consecutive victories to close out the regular season. Two of those wins showed the resilience and potential of these Sun Devils. On April 1, the Sun Devils defeat No. 12 Cal, 4-3, marking the 550th career win for McInerney. Less than 24 hours later, they toppled No. 17 Stanford, 4-2. Earned three wins over ranked opponents, all against Pac-12 teams during a five-match winning streak. ASU picked up its first ranked win of the season on Oct. 17 in a reverse sweep over UCLA, who advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. WATER POLO
TODD CLAPPER (17th SEASON)/PETRA PARDI (INTERIM HC)
NAMED HEAD COACH AUGUST 3, 2005
14-11 OVERALL/2-4 IN MPSF

Todd Clapper closed his Sun Devil Career with a record of 283-178 while in the Maroon and Gold, as The newcomers and seniors shined in 2022 for Sun Devil Water Polo, as Vanda Baksa led the pack as just a freshman. In a conference full of Olympians, Baksa was out playing them nearly all season. Baksa secured the program's freshman single-season goal (73), assist (49), and point record (122). Her 122 points being just one point shy of the program's single-season point record. The six-time MPSF Newcomer of the Week picked up these honors over the final eight weeks of the season during her 17 game scoring streak to close out the year. In the regular season, the Sun Devils had four players lead the MPSF top-8 in field blocks, with Lara Kiss (23) and Vanda Baksa (21) in first and second place, respectively. Arizona State is the only team with four players in this category after Amira Van Buren and Bori Kekesi each notched 11 field goals to tie for eighth on the list. The Sun Devils were notably a defense-heavy team with four more players on the MPSF top-10 list for regular season steals. Lara Kiss's 37 steals led the conference and were one more than 2020 Olympian Maddie Musselman. Vanda Baksa's 35 steals were enough for third place above her two teammates, Bori Kekesi and Blaire McDowell who tied for fourth place with 29 steals each. ASU again was the only school with four players in the top-10 of this category as well. Among the 14 win season were two notable wins with the 22-5 win over Salem being the 4th most goals scored in a game in program history, and the most goals scored by the Sun Devils since 2011. The 19-10 win over California State East Bay was the seventh most points scored in program history.  Petra Pardi was named interim head coach before the final three games of the season, and the Sun Devils put on a show. The first contest after the change was No. 2 UCLA on the road, where the Sun Devils almost pulled off the upset in Los Angeles after taking the Bruins to OT after holding them to just one goal in the opening frame. The following week the Sun Devils hosted No. 1 USC, and matched their energy until the final whistle. Baksa recorded her 10th straight hat trick in the game in the loss, after the early surge from the Trojans ended up as the difference in the competition. The final weekend concluded with a senior-fueled win against the conference foe Indiana. The Sun Devils have not lost to the Hoosiers since 2005. The team did not compete in the 2022 MPSF Championship Tournament after COVID within the team forced them to pull out last minute.
MPSF Newcomer of the Year: Vanda Baksa, first-ever major conference honor for ASU.
All-MPSF Team Honors: Vanda Baksa (Second Team), Lara Kiss (Honorable Mention), Amira Van Buren (Honorable Mention), Vanda Baksa (All-Newcomer Team)
