Dion Miller announced Phillip Butler Jr. as the jumps coach for Arizona State on July 13, 2022. Butler is a veteran coach with more than a decade of experience, contributing to seven conference championships between stops at Prairie View A&M (2015-21) and Stephen. F Austin (2013-15). Butler has extensive experience in not only coaching track & field, but also strength & conditioning and recruiting.
His development at Arizona State has been immeasurable in his short time on campus. In year one, he led the 2023 Pac-12 high jump champion in Grace Campbell to First-Team All-American honors at the NCAA Championships. Campbell placed ninth in the high jump at the national championships, just a month after setting a new school-record at the Pac-12 Championships (1.84m/6' 0.5"). He also helped Christina Warren to becoming the school's record-holder in the triple jump (13.35m/2023), who set the mark at the 2023 NCAA West Regional Preliminaries. At the 2023 Pac-12 Championships, Warren went 13.29m in the triple jump to reach the podium (3rd).

In the 2023-24 season, Butler developed true freshman Alex Johnson into an NCAA Championship qualifier in the long jump. Johnson, who now holds the third-best long jump mark in Women's team history at 6.52m, placed 22nd at the national meet. She was one of three true freshmen to reach the NCAA Championships for the Sun Devils.
While guiding the young talent in Johnson, Butler also helped lead veterans Kiara Lee and Tierra Robinson-Jones in '23-24. Both Lee and Robinson-Jones, like Johnson, were among the 19 Sun Devils to qualify for the NCAA West Region Preliminary Round in Fayetteville, Arkansas. At regionals, Lee's mark of 13.13m in the triple jump improved her status as the third-best in Women's team history, trailing just Christina Warren (13.35m/2023) and Keyasia Tibbs (13.22m/2017). Lee was the runner-up at the 2024 Pac-12 Track and Field Championships in the triple jump with her mark of 12.88m.
Robinson-Jones had an excellent season in her first as a Sun Devil under Butler in 2024, as she took fourth in the triple jump (12.64m) and ninth in the long jump (5.83m) at her first conference championships in May. In March, Robinson-Jones set a new PR in the triple jump at 12.82m, becoming the sixth-best in team history.
Following the conclusion of the 2024 season, three of the top-six triple jumpers in Women's team history -- Warren, Lee and Robinson-Jones -- have all trained under Butler.
Arriving at Arizona State in February 2022 as a volunteer assistant coach, Butler helped in the continued development of two-time Pac-12 Champion Jamar Marshall Jr. (110H), NCAA West Region qualifiers Jalen Drayden (100m), Justin Robinson (400m) and Gamali Felix (400m). He also assisted with home meet operations.
