TEMPE - Phillip Butler Jr. will lead the jumps and multis for Arizona State track and field, head coach Dion Miller said today. Butler is a nine-year veteran coach who's contributed to seven conference championships between stops at Prairie View A&M (2015-21) and Stephen. F Austin (2013-15). Butler is a swiss-army knife. He has extensive experience in not only coaching track & field, but also strength & conditioning and recruiting.

Butler arrived at Arizona State in February 2022 as a volunteer assistant coach and helped in the continued development of two-time Pac-12 Champion Jamar Marshall Jr. (110H), NCAA West Region qualifiers Jalen Drayden (100m), Justin Robinson (400m) and Gamali Felix (400m), and assisted with home meet operations.

"First, all glory to God," Butler said. "Thank you to Ray Anderson, Marcus Williams, and Coach Dion Miller for the opportunity to join this historic program. I'm excited to recruit and develop talented student-athletes who want to apply pressure in the NCAA. Let's get to work!"

"What I like about Phillip is he's a young up-and-coming coach who's absolutely relentless in his recruiting," head coach Dion Miller said. "He knows the Xs and Os and I'm extremely excited to have him on board. He's going to bring a lot of energy to the position, and he does an outstanding job at developing athletes in his event areas. I'm excited to have him here at Arizona State."

Butler replaces John Ellis who stepped away from the program in June 2022. He is the second coach to be announced in as many days following Ryun Godfey's hiring as head coach of the cross country and distance programs.

Phillip Butler Jr. spent seven seasons Prairie View A&M's track and field and cross country programs as both the jumps & combined events coach and recruiting coordinator. Butler was also a part of the PVAMU strength and conditioning coach staff.

His successes include coaching the PVAMU horizontal jumpers and combined event student-athletes to scoring a total of 81 team points at the SWAC Outdoor Championships. They went on to complete the season with a Top-10 USTFCCCA Event Squad ranking in women's triple jump, contribute to two SWAC championship team titles, and qualify three student-athletes to the NCAA Preliminary Championships -  each of whom also earned Division-I All-Academic honors.

In Butler's two seasons with Stephen F. Austin, he assisted with mentoring Jamal Peden to the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships in long jump. Butler coached two NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers, a Southland conference champion, and five All-Southland Conference performers. Butler assisted SFASU's men's team with earning a USTFCCCA top-25 ranking, along with four Southland championship team titles.

As a recruiter, Butler has proved his worth by signing two top-15 athletes in the United States, ten top-25 athletes in Texas, and six top-5 athletes in their respective states ranging across all events in track and field.
As a strength coach, Butler was instrumental in the development of two NCAA National Qualifiers, 23 NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers, 50 SWAC champions, 97 All-SWAC performers, 12 conference meet record holders, and two USATF Outdoor National finalists.
In 2019, Butler was invited to attend the prestigious USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camp for the jumps in Chula Vista, California, at the Team USA Training Center. He holds a strength and conditioning certification and is a USATF Level 1 certified coach.

A native of Coffeyville, Kansas, Butler was a two-time national qualifier at Johnson County Community College in long and triple jump. After earning his associate's degree, he transferred to the University of Arkansas where he competed in the horizontal jumps, was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and earned his bachelor's in sports management in 2013. He completed his master's of education in physical education from Prairie View A&M in 2016 and is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
