TEMPE, Ariz. - The NCAA championships committee released the names of student-athletes accepted into the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships slated for June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif., with 23 members of the Arizona State University program earning berths into the meet either as an individual competitor or as a member of a relay team. The meet, which will be held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the Sacramento State campus, marks the end of the collegiate track and field season.
Seven individual men earned automatic berths into the meet by finishing among the Top 5 at the NCAA West Region Championships last weekend in Eugene, Ore. Those seven men include Steven Koehnemann (100m dash), Seth Amoo (200m dash), Domenik Peterson (400m dash), Jason Barton (400m dash), Aaron Aguayo (3,000m steeplechase), Trevell Quinley (long jump) and Ryan Zimmerman (triple jump). An eighth individual, Casey Burchill, earned a spot in the national meet in the 10,000m run by surpassing the qualifying standard during the season as competitors in the 10,000m run and heptathlon/decathlon do not have to qualify through a regional meet.
Eight different women automatically qualified in nine events with Porchea Carroll leading the way as a three-event qualifier. The senior sprinter will run in the 100m and 200m dashes while also participating in the 4x100m relay and the long jump. A pair of throwers also will pull double-duty as Jessica Pressley is set to compete in the hammer and the shot put while Julia Pedersen will participate in the shot put and the discus. The other automatic qualifiers include Anna Masinelli (3,000m steeplechase), Desiree Davila (5,000m), Amy Hastings (10,000m), Victoria Jackson (10,000m) and Angela Tavlarides (pole vault).
On the relay front, the men will field a team in both the 4x100m and 4x400m events while the women will field a quartet in the 4x100m. Koehnemann, Peterson, Amoo and Kelvin Love, Jr., combine to make up the top-ranked 4x100m relay team in the national rankings and are the favorites to win the national title in Sacramento. Peterson and Amoo also will team up with Barton and Lewis Banda to compete in the 4x400m relay that many feel are set to collect the national crown. On the women's side, Carroll, Tucker, Christina Hardeman and Reed will represent the Sun Devils in the short relay.
Several Sun Devils earned a ticket to the national meet as wildcard selections based upon their performances during the season. The women's wildcard selections include Tucker (200m dash), Reed (400m dash) and Rachel Ellison (1,500m run) while the lone male selection was Ryan Warrenburg (3,000m steeplechase).
Overall, the ASU men and women each have four entrants ranked among the Top 10 heading into the meet. For the men, the 4x100m relay and long jumper Quinley are each ranked No. 1 while the 4x400m relay sits third. A member of both relays, Peterson, rounds out the highly ranked Sun Devils as he is No. 4 in the 400m dash. On the women's side, both Hastings (10,000m) and Pressley (shot put) are ranked fifth overall while Carroll (200m dash) and the 4x100m relay each rank 10th in their respective events.
The NCAA meet opens June 8 and continues through June 11. Live results will be made available on the NCAA site (ncaasports.com) and Sacramento State's site (www.hornetsports.com).
