Kansas State (4-3; 1-3) started fast, but Arizona State and Cardae Mack closed strong as the Sun Devils topped the Wildcats 28-17 and used three quarterbacks to do it Saturday afternoon at Mountain America Stadium.
Mack found the endzone four times and tallied 159 yards on the ground on 26 carries. His four rushing touchdowns were the most by a true freshman at ASU since Leon Burton did the trick more than 70 years ago in 1955.
Arizona State (4-3; 2-2), starting its sixth offensive line in seven games, also started Mikey Keene for the first time and he gave the Sun Devils a needed jolt as he was 10-of-20 for 160 yards before leaving the game late in the second quarter after being rolled on after throwing a pass.
Mack rambled 12 yards to complete a 71-yard, seven-play drive to give ASU a 21-17 lead to start the fourth quarter as true freshman Jake Fette entered the game and led ASU to the score. ASU then stopped Kansas State on downs on the Sun Devil 44 and continued to keep KSU at 17 points.
After both teams alternated possessions, Fette would lead a 65-yard, seven-play drive where Mack iced the game, scoring his fourth touchdown on an 11-yard rush to give ASU a 28-17 lead.
Martell Huges was sensational on defense with 14 tackles, while Owen Long added 10. Ashton Stamps had three pass breakups.
Reed Harris hauled in six receptions for 147 yards for his sixth career 100-yard receiving game, his fourth as a Sun Devil in seven games.

Third Quarter (KSU 17, ASU 14)
The teams forced punts to start the half, but KSU pinned ASU deep on its second drive and forced a three-and-out and got a 27-yard punt return off a short punt that led to a quick touchdown to make it 21-17 with just under eight minutes to play after a four-play, 21-yard drive.
Second Quarter (ASU 14, KSU 10)
Cardae Mack took a direct snap on fourth-and-one as ASU went 55 yards in nine plays that was all set up by the Nick Larty punt downed at the one-yard line. ASU’s next drive stalled, and Kansas State made it 14-10 on a 22-yard field goal as the Wildcats drove it to the ASU four-yard line before being turned away on fourth down. ASU punted for the second straight drive and Kansas State took over at its five-yard line but the drive stalled past midfield.
First Quarter (KSU 7, ASU 7)
ASU kicked the ball out of bounds on the opening kickoff and Kansas State drove it 65 yards in nine plays for a 7-0 lead nearly five minutes into the game as Jacob Knuth hit Jaron Tibbs on a seven-yard crossing pattern to open the scoring. ASU tied it up just over two minutes later on just four plays on a Cardae Mack run after Keene hit Reed Harris on a 51-yarder. ASU forced back-to-back punts while ASU downed a punt at the one-yard line that led to an early second quarter touchdown to make it 14-7 with 14:16 left in the half.
Quarterback starts
Mikey Keene became the seventh quarterback to start at ASU in the Kenny Dillingham era, joining Cutter Boley (six), Jeff Sims (seven), Sam Leavitt (20), Trenton Bourguet (six), Jaden Rashada (two) and Drew Pyne (one). ASU didn’t start a true QB in the final three games of 2023 as it snapped it to Jalen Conyers or Cam Skatteboo due to injuries in Coach Dillingham’s first season.
