ATLANTA – Sun Devil Men’s Swimming opened the week at the NCAA Championships by winning a national championship in the 200 medley relay, setting a meet record of 1:20.07 Wednesday night at McAuley Aquatic Center.

It’s the first national championship in the 200 medley relay for the Sun Devils in program history, led by graduate Adam Chaney, senior Andy Dobrzanski, junior Ilya Kharun and senior Jonny Kulow. The team sits in fourth place after three events with 62 points.

Kulow brought home the win with an electric 17.98 50-meter freestyle anchor leg to touch the wall first. Kharun, the butterfly specialist, put the Sun Devils in second with an 18.70, 50 fly leg. Dobrzanski swam a 23.04 50 breast leg before Chaney started the relay with a 20.35, 50 backstroke leg. The winning time of 1:20.07 is the third fastest 200 medley relay all time, setting a Big 12 record and a school record.

 

In the final event of the night, the Sun Devils placed eighth in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:08.71 to earn a spot on the podium and First Team All-American honors. 

Six Sun Devils are slated to compete in tomorrow’s preliminary swims starting at 7 a.m. MST and finals starting at 3 p.m. The championships can be streamed on ESPN+. Only the top eight in preliminary swims will have the opportunity to swim in the evening finals session. All relay swims are timed finals.
