PHOENIX – In one of the most electric pitching outings in recent Sun Devil Baseball memory, Kole Klecker’s story came full circle as the hometown kid pitched 7.0 innings of scoreless baseball to take the series over 17th-ranked TCU with a 4-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Klecker allowed just two hits, striking out seven and walking three against his former school as the Sun Devils (14-5, 2-1 Big 12) shut out a ranked team for the first time since 2018.

The senior righty - a Chandler native and product of Hamilton High School - was one of the first phone calls head coach Willie Bloomquist made early in his tenure. Klecker opted to explore his options out of state until the ship was righted and spent the first three seasons of his career in Fort Worth, helping lead the Horned Frogs to Omaha during his freshman year.

A sophomore slump and an injury-plagued junior campaign preceded Klecker returning home to the Valley and the veteran responded by matching his career-best of 7.0 innings as he had the TCU order out of sorts from the first pitch.

Klecker’s outing was facilitated by another pair of Valley natives as Landon Hairston homered for the fifth time in the last six games (Queen Creek, Ariz./Casteel) while Derek Schaefer (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) ensured there was no drama with an eight-pitch ninth inning to seal the deal.

Dean Toigo also homered for the fifth time in six games, Dominic Smaldino had two hits with an RBI and Brody Briggs played exceptional defense behind the dish while also adding an RBI. Sean Fitzpatrick tossed a flawless 1-2-3 eighth inning as well to keep the shutout in place.

"At the end of the day, I got Maroon and Gold on my chest. I made sure to compete out there, stick to my process and ended up throwing it well. I had great defense behind me, bats, and scored runs. It was a really good team win and it meant a lot. It was a great win.”

Turning point
Brody Briggs got the Sun Devils on the board first in the second inning with a sac fly to make it a 1-0 game but it was his defense savvy in the top of the third that was arguably the most important play of the game. TCU had runners on the corners with just one out after a double and fielding error. A swinging bunt from Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year Sawyer Strosnider rolled about ten feet down the first base line with Briggs quickly tracking it down and instead of making the throw to first, turning and diving back toward home to tag the runner attempting to come home on the play, getting the lead runner and keeping TCU off the board in what would prove to be their closest thing to a scoring threat the remainder of the game.

Big moment
Dominic Smaldino had a baserunning blunder of his own in the second, failing to score on what should have been an easy sac fly. Unfazed, the transfer stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third and delivered a two-out RBI single to left to make it a 2-0 game. Landon Hairston picked up his pitcher with another monster shot to right center in the fourth to give Klecker a 3-0 lead to work with.

Final straw
With a runner on second in the top of the seventh and two outs, Willie Bloomquist headed to the mound and the crowd rose to its feet to celebrate Klecker’s outing. The head coach spent about five seconds there before Klecker let him know he would get the final out. And he did just that, leaving the field to a rousing ovation and throwing the pitchfork up to the hometown crowd. Sean Fitzpatrick and Derek Schaefer handled the rest while Dean Toigo added an insurance solo shot in the eighth to seal the victory.

The big number
0 -
The Sun Devils picked up their first shutout of the season on Sunday. It was, however, the first time ASU shut out a Top-25 team since a 4-0 victory over No. 16 UCLA on March 25, 2018. It was the first time TCU had been shutout since a 4-0 loss to Oklahoma in the 2024 Big 12 Tournament. It was the first time being shutout in a regular season game since April 20, 2024 against Texas.

Notables

  • Since being thrown into the fire as a pinch runner after Contrades went down in the first inning Sunday against LMU, Austen Roellig has answered the call with 12 hits in his 20 at-bats since that moment. He has scored nine runs and added three RBIs.
  • Dean Toigo had a single in the second inning to extend his streak to six-straight hits (followed by an HBP) without an out prior to his fifth inning groundout.
  • Hairston and Toigo have each homered in five of ASU’s last six games.
  • ASU has outscored opponents 882-520 over its last 92 regular season games, going 65-27 in the process.
  • Klecker and crew held TCU to 0-for-11 batting with runners on base, 0-for-8 with two outs and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
  • The contest marked ASU’s first two-hitter since March 8, 2025 against Gonzaga.
  • The Sun Devils held the potent trio of TCU sophomores (Sawyer Strosnider, Chase Brunson and Nolan Traeger) to 2-for-25 hitting for the weekend (.080) with 11 strikeouts. TCU leadoff batter and veteran Cole Cramer was 1-for-13 for the weekend as well.

“Every once in a while, baseball has that kind of poetry, I guess, that only baseball can give you. And this situation was pretty special for Kole (Klecker), for us as a team, and for me as a coach. It just came full circle, and he just did a tremendous job today."

Head Coach Willie Bloomquist on Klecker's outing

Inning by inning
First inning
Kole Klecker worked around a one-out walk for a scoreless first on the mound, picking up a strikeout.

Landon Hairston led off the game with a single to left center, and moved over to second on Garrett Michel’s two-out walk. Both were left stranded after Dominic Longo fouled out to end the inning.

Second inning
Kole Klecker notched his second straight scoreless inning while not allowing a single runner on base. He registered another strikeout in the process.

Dean Toigo and Dominic Smaldino started the inning with base hits to left center and right center, then Toigo scored off of Brody Briggs’ sac fly, giving the Sun Devils a 1-0 lead. Beckett Zavorek singled into right center to put runners at the corners, but a flyout from Hairston and a strikeout from Moutzouridis ended the inning.

Third inning
After getting a quick flyout, Klecker ran into some trouble, as a double and an error put runners at the corners for TCU. However, the Sun Devils were able to get out of the jam with a fielder’s choice out at home and a strikeout.

Austen Roellig got aboard with a single to center, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Toigo reached on a hit by pitch, and Smaldino singled to left to drive in Roellig, making it 2-0. Briggs then grounded out to first for the third out.

Fourth inning
Kole Klecker didn’t allow a single runner on base for the third time in four innings to maintain ASU’s 2-0 lead.

Landon Hairston added another run to the tally with a one-out home run to right center. However, that was the only action in the bottom of the fourth, as a pop out and a flyout followed.

Fifth inning
The Sun Devils registered their fifth consecutive inning without allowing a run while Kole Klecker struck out a batter for the third time in the game.

Arizona State failed to get on base but maintained a 3-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Sixth inning
Klecker worked around a one-out walk to put up another zero and keep the Sun Devils up three.

The Sun Devils couldn’t get anything going in the bottom of the sixth.

Seventh inning
Klecker notched two strikeouts to give the Sun Devils their seventh straight inning without allowing a run.

Arizona State was able to get two on base with a walk and an intentional walk, but wasn’t able to add to its 3-0 lead.

Eighth inning
Sean Fitzpatrick was the first man out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, pitching a three-up, three-down inning with two strikeouts and a groundout.

Toigo led off the eighth with a home run to deep center field, making it 4-0, Sun Devils. The next three batters went down in order.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer came in to close for ASU and didn’t allow a single runner on base to secure a 4-0 Sun Devil victory. Schaefer notched a strikeout in the process.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening Statement
“Every once in a while, baseball has that kind of poetry, I guess, that only baseball can give you. And this situation was pretty special for Kole (Klecker), for us as a team, and for me as a coach. It just came full circle, and he just did a tremendous job today. He was one of the first, if not the very first kid that I recruited and offered when I got this job. And obviously he made the decision he did, but then we got him here for his last year, and was able to come here and face his old team today and just really have a really a performance of a lifetime there. Seven shutout innings, two hits, kept TCU off balance all day, and just really special. What a great kid and a great story for today. That was outstanding. A lot of fun.”

On the pitching staff as a whole
“Bottom line, when you have a guy that is executing his pitches and locating the way that Kole was today, it makes it a lot easier on your bullpen. To get some length out of your starter is tremendous. We kind of went in today hoping he would give us five and then kind of piece it together from there. But him giving us seven made our job pretty easy. We got (Sean) Fitzpatrick and (Derek) Schaefer in there to finish it up. But it’s a tribute to a lot of things. Sam Peraza, what he's done in the recruiting world, what Jeremy (Accardo) has done on the pitching front, just the staff in general, what they've done on continuing to develop guys, not only physically but mentally, and continuing to go after the right type of guys. We’re continuing to build in that right direction. Compared to when we first got here, it's night and day, but we're not a finished product. We got to keep going.”

On the home runs from Landon Hairston and Dean Toigo
“I'm more interested in just good, solid at bats. And the home runs come as a result of that. They're doing a great job putting the ball in the seats. But they're good hitters too. Dean's had a heck of a series, and kind of came out of a little bit of a funk. I guess he was getting his home runs, but now he's starting to mix his base hits in there too, along with it. And then we can get pretty dangerous with those two bats in the lineup and mixing in around them. And hopefully we get (Nu’u) Contrades healthy here pretty soon, and we get back to rolling the way we're capable again, top to bottom, and Austin Roellig is starting to swing the bat great. It's just kind of a full top to bottom offense here, and it’s been fun to watch.”

On Brody Briggs’ defensive play
“The way Briggs has played behind the plate these last two games has just been outstanding. That heads up play for him to come out of his crouch, retrieve a swinging bunt and go back and beat the runner coming down third to the plate and get a big out there. That was pretty early in the game. That was a big momentum shift early. He had a back pick, that he picked a guy off at first on a phenomenal, electrically quick back pick on him. His leadership and his energy behind the plate is just outstanding. And guys love throwing to him. He's just done a great job back there, even on the days he's not getting his hits, like today he didn't have any hits, but he scraps. He battles at the plate, he competes every pitch, and then just again off defensively, what he does behind the plate is just on another level. So I’m happy for him."

Pitcher Kole Klecker

On the emotions after defeating his former team
“It’s hard to treat this as a normal game. It was a unique feeling for sure because I still have a lot of love for a lot of people over there but at the end of the day, I got Maroon and Gold on my chest. I made sure to compete out there, stick to my process and ended up throwing it well. I had great defense behind me, bats, and scored runs. It was a really good team win and it meant a lot. It was a great win.”

On his strategy heading into the game
“I definitely try to mix, but seeing early in the game that they were allowing me to land it for a strike and then once I started expanding down and they were swinging, me and Coach Ricardo stuck with that because if it's not broke, don't fix it. I was definitely spinning it well today and I think that led to a lot of success.”

Pitcher Sean Fitzpatrick

On his ability to strikeout batters this season
“I'd probably say the biggest thing that helped me the most is my relationship with God. The second was sitting in the weight room for two months lifting, getting stronger. The bottom line is if you execute pitches you earn the opportunity to get whips and get strikeouts, and that's the best way to get someone out. I would say it's a combination of everything, but if you execute pitches, you're gonna have success.”

On coming in relief after a strong outing from Kole Klecker
“I love that. Especially knowing how much this means to him (Kole Klecker) and to us as a team. Today's a big win. It's a swing series, the first Big 12 series win for us. Having the opportunity to go in and pitch any day is a blessing in and of itself but coming in after him (Kole Klecker) after what he did, that's pretty special and pretty fun to be a part of.”

Pitcher Derek Schaefer

On being a part of this ASU team
“It's a similar scenario for me (as Kole Klecker). I was recruited by (WIllie) Blomquist in high school and I decided to go a different route. Coming back here, it's literally a dream come true. Being close to my family, being able to play for a university that's actually close to my heart was really cool.  I'm so proud of them (Klecker and Fitzpatrick), to see what they did today and I'm excited that we got to throw that game and get a series win.”
