The Sun Devil Men’s Golf team split the team title at Utah's Wohali on Tuesday with New Mexico after coming back from four shots down of host Utah and in third place Monday.

ASU shot 14-under 838 (273-296-269) and tied New Mexico, as it made up a five-stroke deficit on the Lobos in the final round. Every Sun Devil shot under par, including senior All-American Michael Mjaaseth, who shot 6-under 65 to notch an eighth-place finish, his 12th top-10 finish in his career.

Sun Devil junior All-American Connor Williams shot a 6-under 65 out of the gate and closed with a 5-under 65 to tie for the individual title.

It marked the 28th team title for Matt Thurmond and the first career title for Williams, who finished last year strong with a second-place showing at the Big 12 Championship, took fifth at the NCAA Bremerton Regional and tied for seventh at the NCAA Championships.

Thurmond's thoughts
"Today was a crazy day. There were times we were leading and even though we played really well, there was a stretch on the back 9, like 12 or 15 where we didn't make enough birdies to win. I thought it was over at that point and then a couple things happened with the other teams that brought us back into it. We played just good enough to tie for the win thanks to three nice birdies on the last hole."

"Even when we had troubles, we didn't make any worse than a bogey. We just hang out in there and played well enough today. We were 15-under as a team. It was an exceptional round and one of the lowest of the tournament, but the other teams played extremely well too. I thought they beat us, but we found a way at the very end to pull it off."

"I don't remember the last time, if ever, we started off the season with two wins. Pretty great. To start up the season with two wins and especially with two freshmen that have played in the lineu. It is really cool for them to play key roles. I love that the expectation is being set. We expect to play well and we expect to be in the final group. We expect to be able to perform and the biggest moments. We expect to finish strong, so it was a nice two tournaments for us.

"The tournament was awesome. We're super thankful to the University of Utah and there entire golf program for putting on a world class event. It was a venue that tested us to the limit. It was great to be in Park City area and playing in such an awesome event."

"Connor (Williams) is a world-class player. He works so hard. He fights for every shot and it didn't come easy for him this week, but he found a way also to get his first collegiate win. His practice round was a little shaky. He was not feeling great and he just battled and found a way to get better with each shot."

"There was a point on 14 where he had a really difficult four-foot putt for birdie and he missed it. It rolled way by because it was it was straight downhill and then he missed the comeback. What went from looking like a birdie turned into a bogey. He might've thought that moment that he had lost it, but he was able to steady himself. He made three pars in a row and the birdied the last hole to come out in a tie first overall. Very happy for him and he's thrilled about the result as well."

Off to Illinois
ASU will quickly move to Olympia Fields for the Illini Invitational Sept. 19-21, where Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma State and Texas join ASU as teams highly ranked in the final Clippd rankings from last year. ASU shot 11-under 829 last year (273-276-280) behind only Georgia Tech, who shot a 12-under 828. Josele Ballester won the event and matched the tournament record with a 10-under 200 (64-66-70), as his 10-under 130 set the 36-hole record at the Olympia Fields. ASU’s 549 second-round set the tournament mark for a single round. ASU won the event in 2009 (30-over 870), while Niklas Lemke won the 2006 event by shooting 1-over 211.

Sahalee Players Championship (Sept. 6-7)
The Sun Devil men's golf team lost two of the best four-year players in school history in All-Americans Preston Summerhays and 2024 U.S. Amateur champion Josele Ballester. That duo had ASU "in the hunt" for much since fall of 2021, including solid shots at a NCAA title and always in the top ten of the rankings. The first tournament of the 2025-26 season was in Seattle, where Summerhays won the event in fall of 2023 and Ballester led ASU to the team title last year. Senior All-American Michael Mjaaseth notched a birdie on the final hole to secure ASU's team win at the Sahalee Players Championship, as the Sun Devils outlasted preseason No. 3 Texas by one stroke to take the trophy in the 12-team event. Mjaaseth tied for fourth with a 1-under 215 (69-72-74), his eleventh top-10 finish in his career.

PGA TOUR U ranking
Sun Devil Men's Golf senior Michael Mjaaseth has earned a spot in the Top-10 of the PGA TOUR U Preseason rankings. PGA TOUR University debuted their list of seniors identified as future professionals based on a variety of factors, including ranking and performance. Michael Mjaaseth is listed at No. 8 in the preseason rankings, putting him firmly in contention for a coveted PGA or Korn Ferry Tour membership.

Mjaaseth is coming off an outstanding junior season which culminated in him earning All-American honors. He was a big reason why Arizona State spent the entire season ranked inside the Top-5 and helped them to a first place finish in the stroke play portion of the 2025 NCAA Championship. Mjaaseth is considered one of the top returning male collegiate golfers in the nation.

A decade of Matt Thurmond
Matt Thurmond gets ready for his tenth season as the head coach of the Sun Devil Men's Golf program. Hired as Arizona State’s head coach on July 25, 2016, Thurmond has enjoyed continued regional and national success. He has established himself as one of the nation's top coaches during his tenure in Tempe.

Thurmond has led the Sun Devils to 27 tournament wins, including the 2024 Pac-12 Championship and consecutive NCAA Regional titles in 2022 and 2023. Arizona State made NCAA Championship Match Play four times in their seven NCAA Championship appearances since Thurmond arrived, highlighted by their runner-up finish in 2022, the program’s highest finish at the NCAA Championship since winning it all in 1996.

In becoming a four-time West Region Coach of the Year (2018, 2022-2024), two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year (2019, 2024), a 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup Team USA Head Coach, and the 2021-22 Arizona State Athletics Frank Kush Award recipient, Thurmond has coached 11 different Sun Devils to 18 All-America honors. Four-time PING All-American Josele Ballester became the first player from Spain to win the U.S. Amateur Championship in August of 2024. He has had both the 2019 (Armen Kirakossian) and 2025 (Thomas Sutton) Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award recipients on his staff.

Competing at an elite level
Arizona State is the only team in the country to have earned a top-two seed at a NCAA Regional each of the past six postseasons (2019-2025). The next closest are Oklahoma, Florida State and North Carolina with five each. In five of those regionals, the Sun Devils have been the No. 1 seed, including each of the past four years (2019; 2022-25).

Here for the long haul
Sun Devil Athletics was thrilled to extend four of its head coaches back in December of 2023, including Men's Golf Head Coach Matt Thurmond. Entering his tenth year with ASU, Farr-Kaye was extended through the 2027-28 athletic calendar. He has led Arizona State to four Top-5 finishes over the past five seasons.

GCAA Hall of Famer
In December of 2024, Matt Thurmond was officially inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame. To be selected to the Hall of Fame, a coach must be nominated by their peers and then selected by the GCAA Hall of Fame Committee. Selection criteria not only include a coach's record on the golf course, but also their contributions to the game, student-athletes, and school. Thurmond's standing as one of the greatest coaches in the men's collegiate game was solidified.

Thomas Sutton named Most Outstanding Assistant
Thomas Sutton received the NCAA Division I Jan Strickland Award from the GCAA following the 2025 season. He becomes the second assistant under Coach Thurmond to receive the distinction. Arizona State won three times with seven other top-three finishes in Sutton’s third season in Tempe.

The Sun Devils finished second at the 2025 Big 12 Championship, their first year in the conference, and was the No. 1 seed after stroke play at the NCAA Championship. Being led on the course by PING All-Americans Josele Ballester, Michael Mjaaseth, Preston Summerhays, and Connor Williams, Arizona State completed the season ranked No. 3 via Scoreboard powered by Clippd.

Along with being the fifth four-time All-American in program history, Ballester became the first Spaniard to win the U.S. Amateur in 2024 before being named 2025 Big 12 Player of the Year and 2025 Division I Gary Player International Golfer of the Year presented by FlightScope.

Hired as associate head coach on June 16, 2022, Sutton has helped lead the Sun Devils to nine tournament victories, including the 2024 Pac-12 Championship and 2023 NCAA Las Vegas Regional, the No. 1 seed in their NCAA Regional each year, and consistent top-five national rankings. 11 PING All-America, 14 PING All-West Region, and six Arnold Palmer Cup selections have occurred with Sutton on staff.
