LAS VEGAS - Arizona State Men’s Basketball is back in Las Vegas to take on Santa Clara at Lee's Family Forum on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST.

The Sun Devils (8-2) will participate in the Jack Jones Hoops Classic, facing the Broncos (8-2) as part of a quadruple-header. Head Coach Bobby Hurley's team is looking to continue their regular season success at neutral sites in the past two years and build off back-to-back wins with a 20.5 average margin of victory since returning to Hawai'i. Coach Hurley has 13 wins in the state of Nevada as the Arizona State Head Coach, the third-most of any state (Arizona, California).

The matchup
Arizona State and Santa Clara will meet for the 9th time, with ASU holding a 6-2 edge. The two sides faced off last year at the same venue on Nov. 8, 2024. The Sun Devils prevailed with a 81-74 victory, their sixth straight decision in the series. The Broncos are led by former ASU Head Coach Herb Sendek. This is a matchup of the second and third winningest coaches in Sun Devil Men's Basketball program history. This will be Sendek's 1,000th career game in his head coaching career, with 296 coming at ASU and 292 coming at Santa Clara in addition to time at NC State and Miami (OH).

Quotable
“We’re feisty. We're resilient. We've had a bunch of games that we've been down and fought back and found a way to win.” - Bobby Hurley on his assessment of the team through ten games

Last time out
Arizona State Men’s Basketball cruised to a 73-48 victory in their return to Desert Financial Arena on Tuesday. In their first home game in 22 days, the Sun Devils (8-2) gave the fans a treat, dominating their in-state foe. Head Coach Bobby Hurley's bench continued to shine, outscoring the Lumberjacks (4-5) 33-3 in the category. ASU shut down their opponent after halftime, holding them to just a 25.9% mark from the field over the final 20 minutes.

Freshman center Massamba Diop had his best offensive game as a Sun Devil, impressing with his touch and finishing ability around the rim. He finished with a career-high 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting while adding six rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes. He was not alone in causing NAU problems, as the entire frontline feasted on the undersized visitors. Redshirt sophomore forward Santiago Trouet delivered another productive effort, contributing 12 points and eight rebounds. Graduate student forward Allen Mukeba came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six boards. The Sun Devils outscored the Lumberjacks 40-22 in the paint.

Despite an atypical scoring night for senior guard Moe Odum, he still managed to find ways to impact the game. He had five assists, three rebounds, and a steal to end +20 in the box score. Senior guard Anthony "Pig" Johnson's presence was felt in several aspects of the game, as he came through with nine points, four rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Redshirt sophomore forward Marcus Adams Jr. continued his emergence since returning from Hawai'i with an eight-point, four-rebound output off the bench.

Full recap of NAU win

Chopping down the Lumberjacks
ASU held NAU to their lowest score all season (48), with the previous low coming in their matchup with Arizona (49). This was the Lumberjacks' lowest 3PT% of the season (19.2%) and their second-lowest FG% (33.3%).

ASU completely neutralized the combined backcourt threat of Ryan Ableman and Arne Osjonik for NAU, holding them to a combined 12 points. They finished 4-of-18 (22.2%) from the field and a mere 2-of-11 (18%) from the three. Coming into the night, they averaged a combined 22.4 points per game and shot over 40%.

Getting defensive
The Sun Devil defense has flipped a switch since coming back from Hawai'i. At the Maui Invitational, opponents shot a combined 93-for-167 (55.69%) from the field and 29-for-68 (42.65%) from deep. In the two games since returning, opponents are combining to shoot just 39-of-114 (34.2%) overall and 15-of-62 (24.19%) from behind the arc.

Second half shutdown
The Sun Devil defense proved to be too much for the Lumberjacks to handle down the stretch. NAU shot just 25.9% (7-for-27) from the field and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils shot 50% (26-of-52) from the field. ASU also outrebounded NAU 24-11 and had a 20-6 advantage in free-throw attempts over the final 20 minutes.

Cleaning the glass
The Sun Devils controlled the backboards against the Lumberjacks, a key to the victory. ASU had a 41-25 on Tuesday night and allowed only two second-chance points. The 16-board difference was the largest margin of the season for ASU and the biggest deficit for NAU as well. The Sun Devils also held the Lumberjacks to a season-low 25 rebounds, which is also the fewest an ASU opponent has had in a game this season.

M.A.J.
Through his first eight games, Marcus Adams Jr. accounted for a combined 16 points, averaging just 2.0 points per contest. In his last two matchups, he has accumulated 19 points, good for 9.5 points per game. After going just 1-of-10 from distance in those first eight games, he is 5-for-8 in his last two games. The Sun Devils are 2-0 with an average margin of victory of 20.5 points during Adams Jr.'s resurgence.

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 577 assists are the THIRD most. He is the only active NCAA Division I player to have been credited with 550+ assists and have played in 108 games or less.

4. Donavan Dent, UCLA - 544 assists in 112 games
5. Kerr Krisa, Cincinnati - 538 assists in 117 games

Sun Devil fans will be tracking Braden Smith's total, as he is attempting to catch Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley as the all-time NCAA assists leader. Hurley finished with 1,076 in 140 games. Smith needs 227 assists to pass Hurley. If he were to play the maximum amount of games (40), Smith would need to average 7.6 assists per game the remainder of the season to pass Hurley.

"Maui" Moe
By delivering one of the most memorable runs in the history of the prestigious event, Moe Odum gained the nickname “Maui Moe”. It was earned, as he was responsible for the 2025 tournament’s signature moments. He ranked at or near the top of several major statistical categories, averaging 26.3 points in leading the Sun Devils to the championship game. For his efforts, Odum was one of six players named to the Maui Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State has been fantastic under Bobby Hurley in regular season games at neutral sites. They are 3-1 to start the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting and are now 8-2 over the past two seasons in such games after going 5-1 during the 2024-25. The five neutral site wins during the regular season last year were a new program record.

The Sun Devils defeated four teams that won 20+ games in neutral settings in 2024-25 (Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, New Mexico). Three were 2025 NCAA Tournament participants. They have already knocked off three 2025 Postseason teams (Oklahoma, Texas, Washington State) under those same circumstances this season. ASU has won 21 games overall under Hurley in neutral site regular season games. That includes past wins over Oklahoma, Texas, NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Washington State, Santa Clara, VCU, and UMass.

2024 Win over Santa Clara in Las Vegas
Arizona defeated Santa Clara in a neutral site matchup at Lee's Family Forum last season. Arizona State took down the Broncos (1-1), 81-74, in a back-and-forth contest. The made 15 three-pointers made by the Maroon and Gold sparked an excellent offensive effort. It was tied for the third-most three pointers made in a single-game in the Bobby Hurley era.

Adjustments implemented by Coach Hurley and the staff paid dividends, as the Sun Devils were extremely effective the rest of the way, especially on the offensive end. Arizona State scored 45 points over the final 20 minutes with the entire team getting involved. Despite several valiant attempts by Santa Clara to counter a powerful Maroon & Gold attack, ASU prevailed with an impressive seven-point win away from home.

Sun Devils in Las Vegas
Head Coach Bobby Hurley and Sun Devil Men's Basketball are no stranger to competing in Las Vegas, as the program has had plenty of success in the city during his tenure. Arizona State is 5-3 in Las Vegas over the past three seasons, picking up victories over Santa Clara, Creighton, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, and USC during that span. The Sun Devils participated in the 2023 Vegas Showdown two seasons ago, going 1-1 at Michelob ULTRA Arena (L vs. No. 20 BYU, W vs. Vanderbilt). In previous years, Coach Hurley has guided ASU to neutral site tournament championships at the 2017 Continental Tire Invitational and the 2018 MGM Resorts Main Event. Here is a look back at some of the program's biggest triumphs in the Entertainment Capital of the World.

2022 Jack Jones Hoopfest (Michelob ULTRA Arena)
ASU 73, Creighton 71 - Dec. 12
Facing adversity and resisting several significant momentum shifts in the second half, Arizona State overcame a 21-point swing and downed Creighton 73-71 in their last appearance at Michelob ULTRA Arena.

Desmond Cambridge Jr. was lethal, dropping his game-high 19 points in only 18 minutes. With ASU taking body blows in the form of a 16-0 Creighton run early in the second half, he drilled two threes in less than 30 seconds to silence the Bluejays faithful. The Sun Devils clamped down defensively - forcing Creighton to miss seven of its final nine shots in the final five minutes - resulting in the massive win.

2018 MGM Resorts Main Event (T-Mobile Arena)
ASU 87, Utah State 82 - Nov. 21
Luguentz Dort earned MVP honors of the MGM Resorts Heavyweight Bracket with a 33-point outing to lift Arizona State to an 87-82 win over Utah State. Dort's tally still is the third-best in program history for by a freshman, behind Mario Bennett (35 in 1992) and Jahii Carson (34 in 2013).

Arizona State moved to 5-0 on the season for only the third time in the past 33 seasons with the victory. This was part of an incredible stretch under Hurley in which the program won 19 straight non-conference games during the regular season.

ASU 72, #15 Mississippi State 67 - Nov. 20
For the second consecutive season, the Sun Devils captured a statement November victory in Las Vegas, NV with the 72-67 win over No. 15 Mississippi State. The Sun Devils broke the Bulldogs full-court press in the final seconds, leading to a slam by Kimani Lawrence that capped off ASU's 4-0 start.

Lawrence drilled a game-winning three from the corner, giving Arizona State a three-point advantage with just 29 seconds to play.  Lawrence tallied a career-high 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting Monday and snagged five rebounds. With Sun Devil Men's Golf legend Phil Mickelson in attedance, the Maroon & Gold advance to the championship game of the event.

2017 Continental Tire Invitational (Orleans Arena)
ASU 102, #15 Xavier 86 - Nov. 24
Arizona State, elevated by a career-high 40-point performance from Invitational MVP Tra Holder, defeated No. 15 Xavier 102-86 to capture the Continental Tire Invitational Championship. The victory was the program's first win over an opponent ranked in the Top-15 since knocking off then No. 6 Arizona, 81-78, on Feb. 7, 2015. It also marked Arizona State's largest margin of victory (16) over a ranked opponent in the Bobby Hurley era. ASU improved to 6-0, eclipsing the 90+ point-mark in all six games. Collectively Arizona State capped the outing shooting at impressive clips of 56 percent (33-of-59) from the field, 48 percent (13-27) from beyond the arc and 92 percent from the charity stripe (23-of-25).

ASU 92, Kansas State 90 - Nov. 23
Kodi Justice scored 19 of his 28 points in the second half to lead Arizona State to a 92-90 victory over Kansas State on Thanksgiving in the Continental Tire Invitational. ASU reached 90 points for the fifth straight game for the first time since February of 1960, moving to 5-0 for only the second time in 32 years. Justice hit from all over in making 9-of-10 field goal and 6-of-8 free throws. He was perfect in four three-pointers and added three assists and just one turnover in 37 minutes.

Getting to the line
As a team, Arizona State ranks 35th nationally and 3rd in the Big 12 averaging 26.2 free throw attempts per game. The Sun Devils streak of five straight games with 27+ attempts from the stripe came to an end last game, but they still finished with 22. In 33 games last season, ASU had only five instances in which they attempted 27 or more free throws. They have already accomplished the feat five times through only ten games this year. In 2024-25, the Sun Devils had only two games where they attempted 34 or more free throws (in 33 games). They have already accomplished this MORE TIMES this season (3) through ten games.

Moe Odum has been the driving force behind the increased free throw frequency. Over his past six games, he is 38-for-41 (92.7%) at the line and is shooting 46-of-51 (90.2%) on the year, the third-highest mark in the Big 12.

8-2 start
The Sun Devils have started 8-2 or better for the second consecutive season. It is their fifth 8-2 start or better in the Bobby Hurley era. Four of their wins to start off 2025-26 have come away from home (3 neutral, 1 road). The 8-2 start comes against the nation's 64th-strongest schedule according to ESPN, who has ASU slotted at 30 in their latest Strength of Record metric with two Quad 1 wins credited (Texas, Oklahoma).
The only two losses the Maroon and Gold have suffered this season have come to No. 8 Gonzaga and USC, who are a combined 18-1 this season.

Seeking a 9-2 start
The Sun Devils are looking for their second consecutive 9-2 start or better to the season and third in the past four years. Should ASU claim the victory, it would be their fourth 9-2 start or better in the Bobby Hurley era.

Don't count us out
The Sun Devils have come back to win a game when trailing at halftime 50 times during the Bobby Hurley era. It has happened three times this season, all of which have come in the past six games. Since 2015-16, the Maroon and Gold are in the top 40 in the nation in halftime comeback victories. Here is the full list of comebacks.

Above the margins
Arizona State has been one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the basketball. Through ten games, they rank 33rd nationally and 4th in the Big 12 in turnover margin (+4.2). ASU converted 13 NAU turnovers into 22 points.

Empty the notebook

  • In their last game, the Sun Devils had a 40-22 advantage over the Lumberjacks in the paint.
  • NAU shot just 33% from the field, making this the second game in a row the Sun Devils have held their opponent to a below 35% shooting percentage.
  •  The Sun Devils also had the edge in rebounds (41-25) and assists (15-8). It was their largest rebounding margin of the year.
  • While both teams turned the ball over 13 times each, ASU outscored NAU 23-12 off turnovers.
  • Arizona State is 87-37 (70.2%) in non-conference games under Bobby Hurley. They have won at least eight non-conference games in seven of his 11 seasons.
  • ASU is 52-6 (.896) when it shoots 50 percent from the field under Bobby Hurley. They are now 2-0 when it has happened this season, with wins over Washington State and NAU.
  •  Odum finished with five assists and now has 5+ assists in eight of ten games this season.
  • After finishing with a career-high five steals in the win over Oklahoma, Bryce Ford backed that up with a career-best two blocks in the win over NAU.
  • The 10 personal fouls committed by the Sun Devils in the last game is the lowest allowed this season. The previous low was 14 personals committed in the season opener vs Southern Utah.
  • In three of four home wins, ASU has led for at least 37 minutes in the game (Utah Tech, Southern Utah, NAU).
  • Andrija Grbovic contributed a career-best six rebounds in the past game, one of four Sun Devils with six or more (Mukeba, Diop, Trouet).
  • Coach Hurley's squad has scored at least 80 points in six of their ten games (6-0 record)
  • Massamaba Diop has 10 or more points in seven of nine games

Massamba making his mark
Freshman center Massamba Diop has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through ten games. He is third on the team in points (12.5) and second in rebounds (4.9), producing at that level in only 26 minutes per game. He also has a team-high 15 blocks and is tied for third on the team with nine steals, doing all this while committing only 19 personal fouls in ten games. He has seven games with at least one steal and eight games with at least one block.

Bench boost
Arizona State's bench continues their dominant stretch, delivering arguably their best game of the season in the win over NAU. After a 33-3 edge in bench points tonight, the Sun Devils now hold a 282-191 (+91) advantage in bench points this season. The +30 margin in the category is a new season high. They have outscored their opponent off the bench in eight of ten games (all eight wins).

Mukeba led the way with his third game in double figures this season, scoring 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and adding six rebounds in 20 minutes. Adams Jr. was effective for a second straight contest, rewarding Coach Hurley's trust with eight points and four rebounds in 21 minutes. Johnson (9 points) and Meeusen (5 points) each had an impact defensively, with five of the team's six steals coming from the bench unit.

Dialed in from deep
Arizona State's starting backcourt has been extremely effective from three-point range this season. Moe Odum and Bryce Ford are a combined 48-for-110 (43.6%) from deep through ten games. Ford leads the team shooting 43.9% (18-of-41) with Odum not far behind at 43.5% (30-of-69). Both rank Top-5 in the Big 12 in three-point shooting.

T-Allen-ted
Graduate transfer forward Allen Mukeba is solidifying his reputation as one of the premier rim protectors in all of college basketball. Mukeba is second on the team with nine blocks this season, adding to his impressive career total. He is one of only 43 active NCAA Division I players with 108 or more blocks. Mukeba’s 108 career blocks are tied for the 42nd-most of any active NCAA Division I player. He is one of only 23 NCAA Division I players nationally with over 108 career blocks in 97 career games or less.

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in from San Diego. In the matchup with No. 8 Gonzaga and a formidable frontline, Trouet had 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Only two Sun Devils finished with two or more double-doubles all of last year, and Trouet accomplished the feat in three games. He currently leads the team in rebounds (6.3 per game).

Pig Power
Senior guard Anthony "Pig" Johnson has emerged as one of the nation's best sixth-man, coming of the bench to provide energy and scoring while living up to his nickname. "Pig" has 10 or more points in eight of ten games as a reserve. He is second on the team averaging 13.3 points per game while shooting 40-for-78 (51.3%) from the field.  He produces the well and efficiently while playing only 22.2 minutes a game. Johnson also leads the team with 66 free throw attempts (3rd in Big 12), tied the team lead in steals (15) and second with 17 assists.

Non-conference schedule breakdown | Conference schedule breakdown

Constant competition
Bobby Hurley has once again assembled one of the nation’s toughest schedules. The Sun Devils have eight games on their schedule against teams in the latest AP Top-25, including FIVE of the Top-10. ASU will play a total of 11 teams that received at least one vote in the lastest rankings.

ASU opponents in the AP Top-25
1. Arizona (Jan. 14 road game; Jan. 31 home game)
4. Iowa State (Mar. 7 road game)
7. Houston (Jan. 18 road game)
8. Gonzaga (Nov. 14 home game)

9. BYU (Jan. 7 road game)
16. Texas Tech (Feb. 17 home game)
19. Kansas (Mar. 3 home game)
25. UCLA (Dec. 17 road game)

Road warriors
Does any team in the nation have a tougher road schedule on paper in the preseason than Arizona State? It would be tough to argue. They have five road games scheduled against teams ranked in the Top-25 of the current AP Poll. That includes Big 12 Conference trips to No. 1 Arizona, No. 4 Iowa State, No. 7 Houston, and No. 8 BYU. ASU has also faced USC away from home as well as past/future matchups with several other programs knocking on the door of the Top-25 at neutral sites.

Impact transfers
A six-man transfer class immediately bolstered the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball roster. It is one of the premier transfer classes in program history. Moe Odum finished fourth in the nation, averaging 7.5 assists per game last year. Marcus Adams Jr. was an All-Big West Second Team selection, while Allen Mukeba landed on the Second Team All-Horizon League. Adante’ Holiman earned All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team distinction. Santiago Trouet made a big jump at San Diego a season ago and has three years of eligibility remaining. Scottsdale native Bryce Ford returns to the Valley after a successful run at Toledo. Odum and Adams Jr. were both rated as four-star prospects by 247 Sports.

Moe Odum, Pepperdine
Allen Mukeba, Oakland
Marcus Adams Jr., Cal State Northridge
Adante' Holiman, Georgia Southern

    The Hurley era

Bobby Hurley has won 176 games in 11 seasons at ASU, the second-most in program history. This is matchup of the second and third-winningest coaches in the history of Sun Devil Men’s Basketball.

    Career wins at ASU
    406, Ned Wulk (1957-82)
    176, Bobby Hurley (2015-present)
    159, Herb Sendek (2006-15)

About those Sun Devil wins
Coach Hurley has notched 176 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 110 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York and Hawai'i, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and West Virginia. Thanks to the November Hawai'i trip, Hurley has now won in a total of 19 different states while at ASU.

Jeff Pendergraph Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
