MAUI - Arizona State Men’s Basketball takes on Washington State in the semifinals of the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational, hosted at Lahaina Civic Center.

For the first time since 1994, the Sun Devils (5-1) are playing for a berth in the Maui Invitational Championship. They face a familiar foe, matching up with the Cougars (3-3), a former Pac-12 Conference rival. It is another opportunity for a marquee win in a neutral-site contest under Bobby Hurley. The two sides will play the second of two semifinal matchups at 6 p.m. MST, with Seton Hall and USC facing off earlier in the day.

The matchup
Arizona State and Washington State will renew an old Pac-12 rivalry in the Maui Invitational semifinals. The two programs will meet for the 91st time, with the Sun Devils holding a 48-42 edge in the series. The last meeting came when both programs were still in the Pac-12. Coach Hurley earned one of his 13 wins over a ranked opponent, as the Sun Devils defeated the No. 21 Cougars 73-61 on Feb. 24, 2024. ASU is 2-0 against WSU in neutral site matchups.

How to follow
The broadcast of Sun Devil Men’s Basketball’s game on Tuesday will air on ESPN when they take on Texas at Lahaina Civic Center, scheduled for a 6 p.m. MST tip-off with Kanoa Leahy and Sean Farnham on the call. Make sure to listen to Jeff Munn and Kyle Dodd on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM (KMVP). The action can also be tracked via live stats.

Quotable

“I watched as much of the game before us as I could, so we have to now reset and leave all the emotion that happened at the end and the dramatic way that we won the game. We now have to figure out a way to be mature enough emotionally to come back out again. We have an opportunity in the semifinals to go to the championship game, and that's got to be the only thing that we're thinking about between now and 3 p.m." - Bobby Hurley on preparing for the semifinal matchup

History at the Maui Invitational
The 2025 Maui Invitational is Arizona State's 6th appearance in the tournament (1991, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2007), compiling a 10-6 record during those visits, including winning the 1994 Maui Invitational with Bill Frieder as head coach in which standout power forward Mario Bennett received tournament MVP honors. During their most recent visit to Maui in 2007, NBA star James Harden led the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record where then freshman guard averaged 17 points/game.

Led by 1992 Maui Invitational co-MVP, Bobby Hurley, the Sun Devils will be one of the tournament's predominant storylines. Coach Hurley will be only the third head coach to lead a team in Maui after winning the Tournament's MVP honors during their playing career (Penny Hardaway/Steve Wojciechowski).

Last time out
Arizona State Men’s Basketball defeated Texas, 87-86, in a back-and-forth first round matchup at the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational on Monday. Behind the heroics of senior point guard Moe Odum, the Sun Devils (5-1) defeated the Longhorns (4-2) to advance to the semifinals of the Maui Invitational. It is ASU's first win over Texas since 1991 and the seventh win over a current SEC team in the Bobby Hurley era.

Odum finished with 36 points, the most by a Sun Devil in a win since Tra Holder in 2017. He willed his team to victory with clutch shot after clutch shot down the stretch. Despite Arizona State trailing by as many as ten points in the half, they did not quit, rallying for a resume-building non-conference win away from home.

The backcourt showed up in a big way offensively in the win, as fellow guard Anthony "Pig" Johnson's play throughout the game was a key reason for the win. He finished with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting and 7-of-10 from the stripe while adding three steals on the defensive end. The Longhorns came into the game averaging only 9.0 turnovers per game, the 18th-lowest mark in college basketball. ASU forced Texas to commit 19 turnovers thanks to a relentless and aggressive defensive gameplan.

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State continued their success under Bobby Hurley in regular season games at neutral sites. They picked up their first win of the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting after going 5-1 during the 2024-25 run.  The five neutral site wins during the regular season were a new program record. The Sun Devils defeated four teams that won 20+ games in neutral settings in 2024-25 (Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, New Mexico). Three were 2025 NCAA Tournament participants. ASU has won 19 games overall under Hurley in neutral site regular season games. That includes past wins over Texas, NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Santa Clara, and UMass.

Mo(e)mentum
Moe Odum delivered one of the greatest individual performances in program history. His 36 points in the win over Texas were not only a career high, they were the most by a Sun Devil since Alonzo Verge had 43 vs. Saint Mary's on Dec. 18, 2019. It was tied for the eighth-highest scoring output by Sun Devil away from home (road or neutral) ever. It is his second career 30-point game and second 20-point game. 36 is the most points by a Sun Devil in a win since Tra Holder had 40 vs #15 Xavier on Nov. 24, 2017.

Getting to the line
Moe Odum entered his name in the individual single-game record book with an epic performance from the free throw line. He finished 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the stripe. It was the most free throws made by a Sun Devil since James Harden also made 16 vs. BYU (Glendale, Ariz.) on Dec. 20, 2008. The 18 attempts are the most by a Sun Devil since Jahii Carson had 18 vs. Oregon State on Feb. 6, 2014. Odum is one of only six players nationally with 16 or more free throws made in a single game this season. He is one of only 10 players nationally with 18 or more free throw attempts this season.

The Sun Devils attempted 36 free throws, the second consecutive game they have finished with 35+ attempts from the strip (37 at Hawai'i). ASU had only two instances in which they attempted 35 or more free throws in 33 games last year and have already accomplished the feat twice through only six games this year.

5-1 start

The Sun Devils move to 5-1 for the second consecutive year. It is ASU’s fifth 5-1 start in 11 years of the Bobby Hurley era. According to ESPN, Arizona State strength of record metric is 22nd nationally through six games after picking up a Quad 1 win over Texas.

Seeking a 6-1 start
The Sun Devils are looking for their second consecutive 6-1 start to the season. Should ASU claim the victory, it would be their fifth 6-1 start or better in the Bobby Hurley era.

Above the margins

Arizona State has been one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the basketball. Through six games, they rank 14th nationally and 2nd in the Big 12 in turnover margin (+6.5). ASU forces 16.7 turnovers per game, the 27th-highest total in the nation. A big factor in their win over Texas was forcing 19 Longhorns turnovers.

Comfortable when it is close
Arizona State moved to 8-3 in games separated by one possession or less over the past three seasons.

Empty the notebook

  • ASU forced Texas to commit 19 turnovers. The Longhorns came into the game averaging only 9.0 turnovers per game, the 18th-lowest mark in college basketball.
  • Arizona State defeats Texas for only the second time in six matchups in their first meeting since the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
  • Bobby Hurley now has seven wins over SEC teams during his tenure and 14 wins over Sean Miller while at the helm in Tempe.
  • Texas came into the game allowing only 62.6 points per game, the 21st-best total in the nation. ASU scored a season-high 87 points.
  • This is back-to-back incredible offensive efforts against great defenses. Arizona State put 83 up against Hawai'i, a Top-25 scoring defense that came into the game allowing only 61.6 points per game.
  • Noah Meeusen's defense has been key for the Sun Devils since his return from injury. In 54 minutes combined over the past three games, he has accounted for seven steals, including recording two steals in 24 minutes in tonight's win.
  • The Sun Devils made 28-of-36 free throws to finish with a 78% clip.
  • ASU started the half 7-of-21 through first 3:15. They made their final five shots to end the first half on a 15-4 run and take a 39-34 lead into the break.
  • Moe Odum (8) and Pig Johnson (7) drew a combined 15 fouls and got the Longhorn backcourt in foul trouble.
  • Arizona State scored 48 points in the second half after scoring 49 in the win over Hawai'i in the previous game. They are averaging 46.0 points in the second half in their past three games and have eclipsed 40 points in each.
  • Anthony "Pig" Johnson came through with a clutch 17-point performance off the bench. He matched his career high and now has five double-digit scoring efforts as a reserve. He shot 5-of-6 from the field and drew seven fouls.
  • The Sun Devils shot 50% (9-of-18) from beyond the arc. ASU is 9-3 over the last four seasons when reaching the threshold.
  • Massamba Diop saved his best for last. After battling foul trouble most of the game, he delivered a timely five points over the final 5:38 of regulation, including a game-tying hook shot with under a minute left.

The Moe Show
Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum is one of the elite passers in college basketball. He is currently 18th nationally and third in the Big 12 averaging 6.5 assists per game. He is Top-5 in the Big 12 in total assists (39), steals (14), and minutes per game (33.7). Odum has 6+ assists in five of six games this season, the lone exception coming during his 36-point performance. He now sits with 39 assists through six games, which puts him on pace for 208 assists over a 32-game season. This would be the third-highest in program history, only behind Ahlon Lewis’ 294 assists (1998) and Marcell Capers' 233 assists (1995).

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 557 assists are the THIRD most. He is the only active NCAA Division I player to have been credited with 500+ assists and have played in 104 games or less.

Active NCAA Division I Players with 500+ career assists
1. Braden Smith, Purdue - 811 assists in 116 games
2. Themus Fulks, UCF - 616 assists in 117 games
3. Moe Odum, Arizona State - 557 assists in 104 games
T4. Donavan Dent, UCLA - 526 assists in 109 games
T4. Kerr Krisa, Cincinnati - 526 assists in 114 games

Proven Passer
Odum ranks near the top nationally in several significant career passing statistics, an indication of what a successful career he has had. Here is a closer look at where he stands nationally in several important categories:

---> 2.70 career assist/turnover ratio - 4th nationally
---> 557 career assists - 3rd
---> 5.36 career assists/game - 8th

Massamba making his mark
Freshman center Massamba Diop has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through six games. He is third on the team in points (12.3) and second in rebounds (5.3), producing at that level in only 26 minutes per game. He also has a team-high eight blocks and is second on the team with eight steals, doing all this while committing only 12 personal fouls in six games. He has had at least one steal in every game and at least one block in four of six contests.

Bench boost
Arizona State has received tremendous contributions from its bench through six games. After a 26-19 edge in bench points in the win over Texas, the Sun Devils now hold a 152-97 (+55) advantage in bench points this season. Anthony "Pig" Johnson led the way with his fifth double-digit scoring output this season. Noah Meesuen added four points and two steals, while Allen Mukeba finished with five points.

Defending from Deep
Arizona State has held its first six opponents to a combined 40-of-143 from behind the arc. Teams are shooting a miniscule 28.0% from three-point range against the Sun Devils so far this season. The Longhorns were held to just 6-of-19 (32%) from deep.

Dialed in from deep
Arizona State's starting backcourt has been extremely effective from three-point range this season. Moe Odum and Bryce Ford are a combined 31-for-69 (44.9%) from deep through six games. Ford leads the team shooting 54.2% (13-of-24) while Odum is also at a 40% clip from deep. Odum went 6-for-12 in his 36-point outburst in the win over Texas.

T-Allen-ted
Graduate transfer forward Allen Mukeba is solidifying his reputation as one of the premier rim protectors in all of college basketball. Mukeba is second on the team with six blocks this season, adding to his impressive career total. He is one of only 42 active NCAA Division I players with 105 or more blocks. Mukeba’s 105 career blocks are tied for the 40th-most of any active NCAA Division I player. He is one of only 19 NCAA Division I players nationally with over 105 career blocks in 93 career games or less.

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in from San Diego. In the matchup with No. 19 Gonzaga and a formidable frontline, Trouet had 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Only two Sun Devils finished with at least two double-doubles all of last year, and Trouet accomplished the feat in three games. He currently leads the team in rebounds (6.7 per game).

Non-conference schedule breakdown | Conference schedule breakdown

Constant competition
Bobby Hurley has once again assembled one of the nation’s toughest schedules. The Sun Devils have seven games on their schedule against teams in the latest AP Top-25, including three of the Top-10. ASU could play a total of 12 teams that received at least one vote in the lastest rankings.

ASU opponents in the AP Top-25
2. Arizona (Jan. 14 road game; Jan. 31 home game)
3. Houston (Jan. 18 road game)

9. BYU (Jan. 7 road game)
12. Gonzaga (Nov. 14 home game)
15. Iowa State (Mar. 7 road game)
18. UCLA (Dec. 17 road game)

20. Texas Tech (Feb. 17 home game)
RV Kansas (Mar. 3 home game)
RV Santa Clara (Dec. 13 neutral game)
RV USC (Potential Maui Invitational opponent)
RV Baylor, Oklahoma State (Big 12 single-game matchups)

Road warriors
Does any team in the nation have a tougher road schedule on paper in the preseason than Arizona State? It would be tough to argue. They have five road games scheduled against teams ranked in the top-18 of the current AP Poll. That includes Big 12 Conference trips to No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 Houston, and No. 9 BYU in addition to a non-conference battle with No. 18 UCLA in Los Angeles. ASU will also face Texas, Oklahoma, and potentially several other programs knocking on the door of the Top-25 away from home in neutral site matchups later this season.

Impact transfers
A six-man transfer class immediately bolstered the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball roster. It is one of the premier transfer classes in program history. Moe Odum finished fourth in the nation, averaging 7.5 assists per game last year. Marcus Adams Jr. was an All-Big West Second Team selection, while Allen Mukeba landed on the Second Team All-Horizon League. Adante’ Holiman earned All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team distinction. Santiago Trouet made a big jump at San Diego a season ago and has three years of eligibility remaining. Scottsdale native Bryce Ford returns to the Valley after a successful run at Toledo. Odum and Adams Jr. were both rated as four-star prospects by 247 Sports.

Jeff Pendergraph Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
