MAUI – Arizona State Men’s Basketball fell to USC in the Maui Invitational Championship Game on Wednesday.
In their fourth game in less than a week in Hawai'i, the Sun Devils (6-2) hung with the Trojans (7-0) for a majority of the contest, but USC ultimately pulled away to claim the title. It wasn't for a lack of effort from the Sun Devils, who had the game tied at 43 at half. ASU couldn't overcome a 60% shooting night from their opponent, falling for only the second time this year.
Senior point guard Moe Odum, who has captured the attention of the college basketball universe with his play at the Maui Invitational, continued to impress in the historic setting. He finished with 79 points over three games after a 17-point performance in the finals. Odum went 4-of-9 from deep to end the three-game stretch 15-of-28 (53.6%) on 3 PT FGs. Fellow guard Anthony "Pig" Johnson also left it all on the court, finishing with 15 points thanks to his attacking mentality. Freshman center Massamba Diop showed flashes of brillance yet again, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Forward Santiago Trouet had a season-high 13 points and a team-best five rebounds.
With victories coming over Hawai'i, Texas, and Washington State, Head Coach Bobby Hurley's squad finishes their first road trip at 3-1. Arizona State will now have a 10-day gap before their next game. The Sun Devils will have time to prepare for 2025 NCAA Tournament participant Oklahoma. They will face-off with the Sooners on Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. MST at the Jerry Colangelo Classic in Mortgage Matchup Center as part of the Hall of Fame Series.
History at the Maui Invitational
The 2025 Maui Invitational was Arizona State's 6th appearance in the tournament (1991, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2007), compiling a 11-7 record during those visits, including winning the 1994 Maui Invitational with Bill Frieder as head coach in which standout power forward Mario Bennett received tournament MVP honors. During the 2007 visit, NBA star James Harden led the Sun Devils to a 2-1 record where then freshman guard averaged 17 points/game.
Led by 1992 Maui Invitational co-MVP, Bobby Hurley, the Sun Devils will be one of the tournament's predominant storylines. Coach Hurley will be only the third head coach to lead a team in Maui after winning the Tournament's MVP honors during their playing career (Penny Hardaway/Steve Wojciechowski).

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State suffered a rare loss under Bobby Hurley in regular season games at neutral sites. They picked up their first two wins of the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting earlier in Maui, but are still 7-2 over the past two seasons in such games after going 5-1 during the 2024-25. The five neutral site wins during the regular season last year were a new program record.
The Sun Devils defeated four teams that won 20+ games in neutral settings in 2024-25 (Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, New Mexico). Three were 2025 NCAA Tournament participants. They have already knocked off a pair of 2025 Postseason teams (Texas, Washington State) under those same circumstances this season. ASU has won 20 games overall under Hurley in neutral site regular season games. That includes past wins over Texas, NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Washington State, Santa Clara, and UMass.

Getting to the line
The Sun Devils attempted 27 free throws, the fourth consecutive game they have finished with 27+ attempts from the stripe. ASU had only five instances in which they attempted 27 or more free throws in 33 games last year and have already accomplished the feat four times through only eight games this year.
Moe Odum has been the driving force behind the increased free throw frequency. Over his past three games, he is 30-for-33 at the line, after finishing 5-for-6 tonight. Following a games in which they drew a combined 15 fouls against Texas 13 against Washington State, Pig Johnson (8) and Moe Odum (2) drew 10 combined fouls which led to a 14-for-16 (87.5%) free-throw effort.
