NEW ORLEANS – Arizona State sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels was one of 30 student-athletes named to the preseason watch list for the Manning Award, as announced by the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Thursday. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
After becoming the first true freshman quarterback in program history to start the first game of the season, Daniels would go on to be named a ESPN Freshman All-American after throwing for 2,943 yards (11th most in school history) and 17 touchdowns in 2019. Daniels, who ended the season with only two interceptions (the fewest in school history by a quarterback throwing 300 or more passes in a season), led ASU to eight victories in 2019, including wins at No. 18 Michigan State, at No. 15 Cal and vs. No. 6 Oregon. Daniels' five 300+ yard performances last season are tied with Andrew Walter (2004) and Rudy Carpenter (2005) for the most in a single season in ASU history. In addition to the ESPN honor, Daniels was also Pac-12 Honorable Mention Freshman Offensive Player of the Year and was a FWAA Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year semifinalist.
Ten finalists will be selected prior to the postseason and the Manning Award winner will be announced following the College Football Playoff National Championship. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls.
This year's Watch List includes players from all 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conferences. The AAC, Big 12 and Big Ten lead the way with four selections, while the ACC, C-USA, the Pac-12 and the SEC each have three selections. There are 13 seniors on the list while the junior class is represented by 11 quarterbacks and the sophomore class has six.
One of the more unique aspects of the Manning Award is the fact that it takes account of the quarterbacks' bowl performances, in addition to the regular season. Thirteen of the 16 Manning Award winners won bowl games during the season they won the honor. Eleven Manning Award honorees led their teams to the CFP Semifinals or a BCS Championship game and seven won national championships.
In addition to the Manning Award's yearly honor, each week during the regular season, eight quarterbacks are recognized as Manning Quarterbacks of the Week. Seventy-one players from 65 different schools were honored during the 2019 season and 377 different quarterbacks from 127 schools have been recognized since 2011.
This is the third watch list that Daniels appears on heading into the 2020 season (Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, Maxwell Award).
