AUGUSTA, Ga. – Arizona State redshirt junior punter Michael Turk was one of 19 student-athletes named to the Ray Guy Award preseason watch list, as announced by the Augusta Sports Council on Wednesday. The award honors the nation's best collegiate punter.
Turk earned All-Pac-12 first-team honors and was a semifinalist for the 2019 Ray Guy Award after finishing first in the Pac-12 and 11th in the nation in punting (46.0) last season. Turk's high and booming kicks enabled ASU's punt coverage unit to finish 12th in the nation in net punting (41.6). Turk was honored as the Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week and the Ray Guy Punter of the Week following a week one performance in which he set the NCAA, Pac-12 and ASU record for highest average yards per punt in a game with a minimum of five attempts (63.0 yards per punt) in ASU's season-opening 30-7 win over Kent State.
Twenty-one of Turk's 59 punts (35.6 percent) traveled over 50 yards in 2019, six more than any other player in the Pac-12. He pinned 32 of those 59 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line (54.2 percent), a total that was second in the nation.
Semifinalists for this year's award will be announced on November 24th. Online voting will then commence until November 27th. Three finalists will be announced on December 2. Another online poll will follow that will last through December 6. The 2020 Ray Guy Award winner will be announced during the Home Deport College Football Awards Show in Atlanta on December 11.
The Augusta Sports Council created the Ray Guy Award in 2000 to honor Thomson, Georgia native and College and Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee, Ray Guy. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
