DALLAS – Arizona State sophomore offensive lineman Dohnovan West was named to the preseason watch list for the 2020 Outland Trophy, as announced by the Football Writers Association of America on Tuesday. The list recognizes 85 standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents.
As one of less than 20 true freshmen in the FBS to start at offensive line in the 2019 season opener, West made an impressive transition from high school to first-year starter at the Power 5 level. Named to the USA Today Sports Freshman All-America Team, All-Pac-12 honorable mention and Pro Football Focus Pac-12 third-team offensive guard, West started the first two games at center before transitioning to right guard where he remained for the final 11 games of the season.
The Mission Hills, Calif., native helped pave the way for Eno Benjamin's second consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season, the first time an ASU running back has accomplished the feat in back-to-back seasons since the 1970's. West had the 24th-best impact run block percentage among right guards in the country with a 13.0 percent positive impact – nearly three points higher than the national average. It was the eighth-highest mark among any offensive guard in the Pac-12 on the season. He will be the second-highest graded Pac-12 guard returning in 2020.
The recipient of the 75th Outland Trophy will be announced in early December. The official presentation to the winner will be made in Omaha, Neb., at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, scheduled for Jan. 13, 2021.
