FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Arizona State sophomore tight end/H-back Ethan Long was one of 114 student-athletes named to the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list, as announced by the award's organization on Thursday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
The first true freshman in program history to be named a team captain last season, Long has already made a tremendous impact that goes beyond the field. The West Linn, Ore., native is involved with ASU's Tip of the Fork Program, a program that encourages high-performing Sun Devil student-athletes to redefine their standard of excellence by providing them with experiences and education to become transformative leaders in their community. Long has been one of ASU's student-athlete representatives at the NCAA Apple Conference that focuses on substance abuse prevention and health promotion of college athletes. He was also nominated to serve on the Sun Devil Football Leadership Development Program. Long's volunteering efforts include working with Feed My Starving Children and Play 60.
On the field, Long is one of the team's most versatile talents. Last season he played in 10 games and saw action at quarterback, wide receiver, h-back, and on special teams.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 3 and finalists will be announced on November 23. The formal announcement of the 2020 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City on December 8. The presentation of the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy will occur at the 52nd All Sports Association Awards Banquet on February 19, 2021 in Fort Walton Beach.
