  • Fans are encouraged to follow the Devils on Twitter @ASU_Baseball for updates throughout the week.

Scouting the Cowboys

  • ASU is 15-12 all-time against Oklahoma State, dropping last season's mid-week tilt to the Cowboys in the last matchup between the two.
  • Following a midweek split of two games against Little Rock in Stillwater, OSU is 5-2 on the season. The Cowboys opened 2018 with a road series win at Texas State before sweeping a weather-shortened, two-game series against Marist on its home opening weekend.
  • OSU is coming off a 2017 season in which it made its fifth consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and finished 30-27 overall. The Cowboys went 8-14 in conference play a year ago to finish eighth in the standings but made history when they became the first-ever team to win the Big 12 Championship title as a No. 8 seed; OSU swept through the tourney field with a 4-0 mark.
  • The Cowboys return six position players who started at least 30 games last season, while nine pitchers who combined for 16 wins return to the staff.
  • The 2018 season marks OSU's sixth under head coach Josh Holliday, who has compiled a 205-108 record at his alma mater.

Eli's Coming

  • Eli Lingos led the Sun Devils with six quality starts last season. No other Sun Devil had more than one quality start this season.
  • Already, Lingos has started 2018 where he left off as he picked up the win in a quality start during opening weekend. He went 5.2 innings in his second start, allowing just three runs as he came within one out of his second quality start of the year.
  • Lingos is second on the team this season with 11 strikeouts to just 3 walks thus far this season.

12-Gage

  • Gage Canning has put together an All-American type campaign early in this season, currently ranked fourth nationally and leading the Pac-12 with his .583 average so far this season and his 21 hits lead the nation as well.
  • Canning has a hit in each game and multiple hits in 7 of ASU's 9 games so far, including three games with 3 hits and one game with 4 hits.
  • Canning is the NCAA's active leader in career triples with 17 so far in his career and three this season - good for second in the NCAA
  • The junior is slugging .833 to date, good for 46th nationally and 8th in the Pac-12.
  • Canning already has four games with 3+ hits. Last season, he came the first player to reach double digits in the category (10) since Jason Kipnis had 13 in 2009.
  • The junior's numbers in clutch scenarios are exactly what you would hope from a veteran player as Canning in currently batting .833 with runners in scoring position (5-of-6), 1.000 with a runner on third and less than two outs (4 RBI on 4 opportunities), .714 with two outs (5-of-7) while advancing runners 10-of-12 chances this season (.833).
  • Canning was the only player in the Pac-12 last season to finish with a double-digit number doubles while also posting at least six home runs and six triples.

#LINSANITY2018

  • Lyle Lin and Canning are the only two players to have a hit in each game this season.  He is batting .486 on the year and his 17 hits are tied for 10th in the country.
  • Lin has been ASU's top hitter with two outs this season, leading the team with 7 hits and batting at a .538 clips in the process.
  • Lin has matched Canning with multiple hits in 7 of the 9 games played this season.

A Swift Start

  • Drew Swift has been one of the elite freshmen in the country in the small sample size to date, currently fourth on the team with a .269 average while adding a much-needed defensive prowess at shortstop.
  • Swift  leads the team with 7 walks and is third on the squad with a .457 on-base percentage.
  • The freshman has produced many productive at-bats, leading the team in advancing runners 11 times on 19 attempts thus far this season (.579).
  • Swift leads the Pac-12 with 27 defensive assists this season.
  • The frosh has helped to turn four double plays this season.

Fear the Tork

  • Spencer Torkelson has provided some pop in the Sun Devil lineup that is already off to a historic pace.
  • The freshman has six home runs in nine games this season, ahead of the pace that Mitch Jones set in 2000 (6 home runs in 10 games) en route to his school record 27 home runs.
  • Torkelson is second nationally in the category and has two more home runs than any other freshman in the country,
  • The Sun Devil freshman record is 11 home runs by Barry Bonds in 1983. With two more home runs, Torkelson will already be in ASU all-time top-five for freshman in the category.
  • Torkelson is third on the team with a .324 average, with six of his 11 hits this season leaving the ball park.
  • He is 28th nationally and fourth in the Pac-12 with a .912 slugging percentage and eighth nationally with 31 total bases touched on the season - first in the Pac-12.

Not Playing Kooi

  • Boyd Vander Kooi has been as impressive a freshman as any in the country thus far this season, loggina 2-0 record in his first career starts with a paltry 0.61 ERA.
  • After two weeks of action, Vander Kooi was the only freshman pitcher in the country that has pitched at least 14.0 innings this season and maintained under a 1.00 ERA.
  • He is tied for fourth among all freshmen in the NCAA this season with 14 strikeouts.

Keeping It Interesting

  • The Devils have a knack for success in close games in recent years.
  • Since 2016, the Devils are 7-2 in extra-inning games (1-1 in 2017), with six walk-off wins (two last season) and are 23-8 (1-1 this year) in one-run games - including 7-6 in Pac-12 play.
  • ASU has driven in the game-winning run in the eighth inning or later 14 times (four times this year).
  • Arizona State has notched 10 wins since 2016 when trailing after six innings (four times last season).

And All That Chaz

  • Sophomore Chaz Montoya has been exceptional in relief this season, posting two saves in four appearances to date.
  • Montoya has a perfect 0.00 ERA in those appearances, striking out six with no walks.

#OccupyPHXMuni

  • ASU drew more than 83,000 fans last season, more than it posted in 2016 and finished 27th nationally in total attendance and average attendance per game (2,622).
  • The Sun Devils have had a pair of big attendance games this season, including 6,010 against Oregon State in the series opener - the second largest crowd since moving back to Phoenix Muni - as well as 4,107 fans against UNLV in the largest mid-week attendance since returning to Muni and fifth-largest overall since returning.
  • ASU ranked 13th in total attendance and was the only school west of Texas to draw more than 100,000 fans in 2015, and ranked 18th in average attendance with 3,082 fans per game. ASU's 107,010 fans were the program's most since 2010 and ranked as the fourth-highest regular-season attendance since 1988.
  • ASU moved back to Phoenix Municipal Stadium in 2015 after playing 40 seasons at Packard Stadium from 1974-2014, winning their first contest in the team's on a walk-off home run in extra inning against No. 5 Oklahoma State on Feb. 13, 2015.
  •  The Devils played 137 games at Muni from 1964-74, and went 111-26 at the stadium, including 17-6 against Arizona. ASU's first game at Muni was April 10, 1964, and was a 5-3 win over Arizona. ASU's last game at Muni was March 18, 1974, and was 9-6 win over Colorado. ASU won District 7 titles in 1965 and 1967 at Muni before going on to win National Championships in Omaha.
  • Former Sun Devil and eventual Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson was the first college player to hit a home run at Muni.
