TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil Baseball team fell to Saint Mary's, 6-1, in the first game of the three-game series at Phoenix Municipal Stadium on Friday night.
Despite the loss, center fielder Gage Canning paced the Sun Devils (2-3) on offense all night. As the leadoff hitter, Canning kicked off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right field and didn't let up with his bat for the remainder of the contest.
Canning finished the game 4-for-4 with two doubles and he was responsible for driving in the Sun Devils' only run of the night, scorching a double to right field to score Gage Workman who had singled to open up the inning. The four-hit effort tied a career-high for Canning, while also representing the fourth multi-hit game of the season for the junior. It was the first four-hit outing from a Sun Devil this season.
Along with Canning, starting catcher Lyle Lin also recorded his fourth multi-hit performance, finishing the game 2-for-4 with a double. Both Lin and Canning have at least one hit in each of the first five games of the season.
Right-hander Fitz Stadler got the first call out of the bullpen, coming into the game in the third inning for starter Spencer Van Scoyoc. Stadler gave the Sun Devil pitching staff a nice break, providing length out of bullpen. He tied a career-high going 3.2 innings, allowing one earned run, and recording a career-high four strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman lefty Dellan Raish made his collegiate debut, relieving Fitz Stadler to open up the seventh. He entered the game in the seventh frame and tossed a gem over the final three innings, allowing just one hit and recording two strikeouts. Freshman Drew Swift, who came into the game leading the nation in on base percentage, has now reached base in every game he has played as a Sun Devil after drawing an eighth inning walk.
The three-game series against the Gaels rolls on Saturday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, with the first pitch slated for 1 p.m. Check out the action by tuning into the live stream that can be accessed online via Pac-12 Plus.
