TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona State baseball team defeated Saint Mary's in the final game of its three-game series against the Gaels, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Arizona State's (3-4) freshman pitcher, Boyd Vander Kooi, surrendered a hit on the first pitch of the game but quickly rebounded as he retired the next 6 batters on just 24 pitches, including four strikeouts through the first two innings of the game.
The Devil defense had things rolling as well, turning a big double play in the fourth after Vander Kooi allowed a leadoff walk. ASU played errorless ball throughout, with Drew Swift leading the way at shortstop with his team-leading five assists.
Vander Kooi would not surrender another hit until the fifth inning as he kept the Gael offense off balance throughout the effort. The freshman bounced back from allowing his first run all season in the sixth with six outs sandwiched around a walk to complete his effort.
Vander Kooi finished the game with a final line of 7.2 innings pitched with 9 strikeouts and just one run allowed, exiting the game with his team on top, 2-1. The nine strikeouts are a season-high for a Sun Devil pitcher. In fact, no individual Sun Devil struck out nine batters in an outing all of last season. In two career starts, the freshman has pitched beyond his years, going 14.2 innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out 14 batters.
Catcher Lyle Lin got the Sun Devils on the board with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning to break up what had been a perfect game for St Mary's pitcher Ken Waldichuk to that point. Lin now has two home runs through seven games this season after only hitting two home runs in 55 games last season. The fourth inning homer represented the sixth home run of the season for the Sun Devils, a feat they did not accomplish until the 14th game last season.
In the bottom of sixth inning, after the Gaels had evening things at 1-1, third baseman Gage Workman singled to center field to start the Devils off. Workman now has a hit in each of his four starts this season. After perfectly executed sacrifice bunt from Alika Willams, center fielder Gage Canning continued his lights-out start to the season with an RBI single to bring in Workman to give the Devils a 2-1 lead that they wouldn't relinquish.
Sophomore pitcher Chaz Montoya finished the day off for the Sun Devils, allowing just one hit through the 1.1 innings as he earned his first save of the season. The sophomore looked to be comfortable on the mound, mixing his pitches effectively leading to a pair of strikeouts. The sophomore has not allowed a run in three appearances this season.
With each recording a multi-hit game, Lyle Lin and Gage Canning have a hit in all seven games this season. Canning finished the series 7-for-11(.636) with three extra base hits and three RBI's while being intentionally walked two times. Lin was outstanding as well against the Gaels, ending the 6-for-12 (.500) with a home run and a double.
The Sun Devils now hit the road February 27th-28th for a two-game stretch against Long Beach State. This weekend, Arizona State returns to Tempe to host 2017 NCAA Fayateville Regional participant Oklahoma State in a three-game series set for March 2nd-4th.
