PHOENIX, Ariz. – Centerfielder Andrew Shaps and catcher Zach Cerbo both blasted home runs, but it wasn't enough as Sun Devil Baseball fell to UCLA, 17-4, Sunday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
Lyle Lin posted his 13th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run scored while Cerbo was also 2-for-4 on the afternoon with an RBI and a double.
UCLA (13-12, 6-3) came out of the gate firing in the first inning, using three hits to push five runs across the plate with none out. Starting lefty Reagan Todd would lock in after allowing a bases-clearing double to record three-straight outs to limit the damage. The Devils (12-14, 2-7) quickly responded in the home half of the inning when Shaps sent one over the right field wall to cut the lead to 5-1.
Todd would record the first two outs in the second frame, however, head coach Tracy Smith would call to the bullpen after a two-out double. Righty Ryan Hingst would make the trot to the mound, allowing a sacrifice fly before inducing an inning-ending pop out. The Texas-native would come back out to pitch the third inning, notching two quick outs and working around yet another two-out hit by the Bruins to throw up the first zero on the afternoon.
After a leadoff walk, the Bruins would chase Hingst from the game after crossing the plate twice to make 8-1 with none out. Righty Alec Marsh would answer the call with runners on first and second. The freshman remained calm and poised, recording three-straight outs while only giving up one run off a sacrifice fly.
Marsh ran into some difficulty in the fifth, needing just two pitches to record the first out, but began to lose control of his pitches, allowing three hits, a walk and hitting a batter. Righty James Ryan would take over with a 12-1 deficit, allowing back-to-back-singles to plate two runs before recording the final out to end the inning.
Ryan shut down the Bruins in the sixth, and Cerbo would hit his second career home run off the first pitch of his at-bat in the bottom of the inning, making the score 14-2.
Lefty Garvin Alston Jr. threw an almost perfect seventh inning in his third appearance of the season, notching two-straight outs and then walking the subsequent batter on five pitches. The sophomore would battle to a full count to record a groundout and end the inning.
Arizona State showed life in the final frame, using back-to-back singles by Taylor Lane and Lyle Lin to put two on with no outs. Designated hitter Tyler Williams stepped into the box and nailed a double down the left field line, scoring Lin from second and advancing Lane to third. The Devils would push another across the plate by taking advantage of a UCLA fielding error, bringing the score to the final 17-4.
