TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Led by first-team selections Dustin Pedroia, Travis Buck and Jason Urquidez, 14 total Arizona State baseball players were named to the 2004 All-Pac-10 Baseball team.
Pedroia (Woodland, Calif.) finished a close second for earning his second consecutive Pac-10 player of the Year award, but became only the fourth player in ASU history and 22nd in Pac-10 history to earn first-team all-conference honors three straight years. The junior shortstop heads into the NCAA Tournament hitting .395 (92-for-233) with a league-leading 24 doubles, nine home runs and 48 RBI.
Former Sun Devils Alvin Davis (1980-82), Don Wakamatsu (1983-85) and Andrew Beinbrink (1997-99) were the only other Sun Devils to earn three straight first-team awards. UCLA outfielder Garrett Atkins was the last Pac-10 player to achieve that honor from 1998-2000.
Buck (Richland, Wash.) picked up first-team honors after earning honorable mention as a freshman in 2003. The sophomore right fielder is hitting .365 (77-for-211) with 16 doubles, nine home runs, 56 RBI and a .578 slugging percentage. Buck is one of nine Pac-10 players to also be invited to the USA Baseball National Team Trials next month in Durham, N.C. He became only the second ASU player to earn back-to-back Pac-10 Player of the Week awards earlier in the year.
Urquidez (Simi Valley, Calif.) is tied for the Pac-10 lead with 11 wins and is second with a 3.31 ERA heading into regional play. The junior right-hander has struck out 90 in 92.1 innings and ranks fourth in the league with a .249 opponents batting average. The transfer from Central Arizona College was named the Clemens Award watch list after he was named Pac-10 and National Player of the Week with his complete-game, three-hit victory over No. 1 Rice on the road (2/22).
Josh Asanovich (Jr., INF, Gold Canyon, Ariz.), Erik Averill (So., LHP, Orange, Calif.), Pat Bresnehan (Fr., RHP, Sherborn, Mass.), Chris Cook (Jr., 1B, Mesa, Ariz.) Colin Curtis (Fr., OF, Issaquah, Wash.), Tuffy Gosewisch (Jr., C, Scottsdale, Ariz.), Jeff Larish (Jr., OF, Tempe, Ariz.), Jeff Mousser (Sr., RHP, Tempe, Ariz.), Joe Persichina (Fr., INF, Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.), Nick Walsh (Sr., INF, Alamo, Calif.) and Zechry Zinicola (Fr., RHP/DH, San Bernadino, Calif.) all earned honorable mention honors.
