TEMPE – Sun Devil Wrestling heads into the back half of the regular season with both home and road dual meets on deck. The weekend kicks off Friday with a home matchup against familiar foe Oregon State, before Arizona State shifts gears for a road dual at Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon.

Where to watch
Fans can tune into both matches via ESPN+ with a subscription. Blake Niemann alongside former Sun Devil Wrestler and UFC star Aaron Simpson will have the call on Friday evening. 

Last time out
The Sun Devils are coming off a tri-dual split, going 1-1 with an 18-17 upset win over then-No. 22 Cornell, before falling to Columbia, 24-15, on Saturday, Jan. 31. 

Senior 184-pounder Azizbek Fayzullaev headlined the afternoon for ASU with a crucial win by fall to put six team points on the board for the Maroon and Gold to fuel the comeback win over Cornell. 

The Sun Devils dropped the second match against Columbia despite graduate heavyweight David Szuba adding his second win of the day - the only ASU wrestler to go 2-0 across both matches. Redshirt junior Carter Dibert (133 lb.) also notched his first win of the season. 

Amidst the tri-dual, ASU sent an additional seven wrestlers to compete in the annual Edinboro Open. Freshman heavyweight Ben Szuba continued to impress in his rookie campaign, going 4-0 to claim first place in the heavyweight division. He now moves to 12-2 on the season with eight bonus-point wins in addition to two tournament championships (Edinboro Open, Reno TOC).

Scouting the opposition
No. 22 Oregon State (6-1, 3-0 Pac-12)
The Sun Devils will square off against the Beavers for the first time in a non-conference setting after 44 matches as Pac-12 conference rivals. 

ASU holds a 26-18 advantage in the all-time series, with a 13-8 record at home in addition to seven consecutive wins dating back to Nov. 24, 2015. 

The Beavers have rattled off four wins in a row after downing Wyoming, 25-12, on Saturday, Jan. 12 to move to 6-1 on the season. 197-pounder No. 4 Justin Rademacher headlines a squad that includes six ranked wrestlers in the most recent polls from Intermat / Flo Wrestling.

Oklahoma is fresh off a 28-13 upset win over No. 13 Northern Iowa on Saturday, Jan. 31.

ASU comes in at 4-14 in the all-time series despite dropping the most recent match on Feb. 6, 2025. The Sun Devils are aiming for their second all-time win in Norman. Sunday’s meet will mark the first time ASU has traveled to Oklahoma since Jan. 8, 2021 and will be its first visit as a member of the Big 12 Conference.

Seven wrestlers are featured in the weekly rankings with a pair of top-10 talents in No. 8 Carter Schubert (174-lb.) and No. 10 Brian Soldano (184-lb.).

Breaking down the Devils

  • The Sun Devils are coming off their first dual win against a ranked opponent since downing then-No. 12 Lehigh (24-14) on Feb. 24, 2024. The win over Cornell also marked the first win over the Bears in 25 years. 
  • ASU features five wrestlers in the most recent rankings from Intermat
  • The Szuba brothers have combined to go 29-11 this season in the heavyweight division, while winning 21 consecutive matches combined.

  • Ben Szuba joins Cael Valencia as the only Sun Devils to win multiple tournaments this season after taking the crown at the Edinboro Open.

  • Kaleb Larkin is now 6-1 in the newly reclassified 157-lb. division. After No.7 Meyer Shapiro of Cornell handed Larkin his first loss at 157, he bounced back with a win by fall over Columbia’s No. 18 Kai Owen. Larkin has never lost back-to-back matches throughout his career. 
  • Kyler Larkin ranks No. 1 nationally at 133 lbs. in the RPI, posting a 0.7124 rating through 14 matches. 
  • Pierson Manville has outscored opponents 176-69 on the season while holding a career-best 14 wins 
    • Additionally, Manville has not given up more than 10 points in a match this season
