“I've used the word 'resilience' a lot when I've described this team, so I think that's like the perfect way if you want to watch a team that Moe said is going to fight and they're not going to give up. A bit of an underdog." - Bobby Hurley on what the fans can expect from the team

Arizona State Men's Basketball Maui Invitational Recap

Neutralizing the opponent
Arizona State has been fantastic under Bobby Hurley in regular season games at neutral sites. They went 2-1 to start the 2025-26 campaign in a neutral setting at the Maui Invitational and are now 7-2 over the past two seasons in such games after going 5-1 during the 2024-25. The five neutral site wins during the regular season last year were a new program record.

The Sun Devils defeated four teams that won 20+ games in neutral settings in 2024-25 (Saint Mary's, Grand Canyon, Santa Clara, New Mexico). Three were 2025 NCAA Tournament participants. They have already knocked off a pair of 2025 Postseason teams (Texas, Washington State) under those same circumstances this season. ASU has won 20 games overall under Hurley in neutral site regular season games. That includes past wins over Texas, NC State, Kansas State, St. John's, Mississippi State, Xavier, Michigan, Utah State, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, Creighton, Washington State, Santa Clara, and UMass.

For the third consecutive season, the Sun Devils will compete in Downtown Phoenix at the home of the Phoenix Suns. At the Jerry Colangelo Classic last year, Arizona State faced off with Grand Canyon in a battle for the Valley.

Arizona State controlled the second half and emerged with a 87-76 win over GCU in November of 2024. Behind 18 points from senior forward Basheer JihadBobby Hurley secured the 200th career win of his head coaching career. Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
The Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for games running Nov. 24-30 is Sun Devil point guard Moe Odum. In leading the Sun Devils to a 3-1 record during their road trip to Hawai’i, Odum put together one of the most productive weeks in college basketball.

He becomes the first Sun Devil to claim a weekly conference award since Jayden Quaintance was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Dec. 27, 2024.

Conference weekly honors under Hurley
This is the 17th time a Sun Devil has won a Conference Player of the Week award under Bobby Hurley and the first this season. Since joining the league before last season, Arizona State has already claimed three Newcomer of the Week honors. New this year is the introduction of the Big 12 Conference Starting Five, where three other individuals are recognized for their efforts in addition to the Player and Newcomer of the Week.

Odum is the first Sun Devil to be selected to a Big 12 Conference Starting Five. He joins some exclusive company on a list of conference weekly honorees, including recent standout guards Desmond Cambridge Jr.Josh ChristopherRemy Martin, Luguentz Dort, Shannon Evans II, and Tra Holder.

Dick Vitale's National Player of the Week
The recognition from the Big 12 Conference was not the only respect Odum received for his breakout stretch in Hawai’i. Renowned ESPN national college basketball analyst Dick Vitale identified Odum as his National Player of the Week.

"Maui" Moe
By delivering one of the most memorable runs in the history of the prestigious event, Moe Odum gained the nickname “Maui Moe”. It was earned, as he was responsible for the 2025 tournament’s signature moments. He ranked at or near the top of several major statistical categories, with the box score only shedding light on part of his impact. Odum was one of six players named to the Maui Invitational All-Tournament Team.

Taking down Texas
Behind a masterpiece from senior point guard Moe Odum, the Sun Devils defeated the Longhorns to advance to the semifinals of the Maui Invitational. It was ASU's first win over Texas since 1991 and the seventh win over a current SEC team in the Bobby Hurley era.  He willed his team to victory with clutch shot after clutch shot down the stretch. Despite Arizona State trailing by as many as ten points in the half, they did not quit, rallying for a resume-building non-conference win away from home.

Odum delivered one of the greatest individual performances in program history. His 36 points were not only a career high, they were the most by a Sun Devil since Alonzo Verge had 43 vs. Saint Mary's on Dec. 18, 2019. It was tied for the eighth-highest scoring output by Sun Devil away from home (road or neutral) ever. It was his second career 30-point game. 36 was the most points by a Sun Devil in a win since Tra Holder had 40 vs #15 Xavier on Nov. 24, 2017.

Conquering the Cougars
Arizona State Men’s Basketball advanced to the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational Championship Game thanks to a 100-94 defeat of Washington State In the semifinals. The Sun Devils bounced back and had plenty of juice despite having the latest game of the previous day. They put 100 points up on Washington State (3-4) to clinch a spot in the Maui Invitational Finals. It was an offensive explosion with many cylinders firing, as Head Coach Bobby Hurley's team shot 58.9% from the field.  ASU moved to 51-6 (.895) when it shoots 50 percent from the field under Bobby Hurley

Less than 24 hours after becoming the talk of the sport with a 36-point clinic, senior point guard Moe Odum had more in store. He backed that up with 26 points and five assists, finishing 6-of-9 from the field including an incredible 5-for-7 from behind the arc. He also nailed all nine of his free throws and drew five fouls. The 62 combined points were the first time a Sun Devil had 60+ over a two-game stretch since Alonzo Verge Jr. in 2019 (61 combined points vs St. Mary's and Creighton).

Getting to the line
The Sun Devils attempted 27 free throws against USC, the fourth consecutive game they have finished with 27+ attempts from the stripe. ASU had only five instances in which they attempted 27 or more free throws in 33 games last year and have already accomplished the feat four times through only eight games this year.

Moe Odum has been the driving force behind the increased free throw frequency. Over his past three games, he is 30-for-33 at the line, after finishing 5-for-6 against USC. Following games in which they drew a combined 15 fouls against Texas 13 against Washington State, Pig Johnson (8) and Moe Odum (2) drew 10 combined fouls which led to a 14-for-16 (87.5%) free-throw effort.

6-2 start
The Sun Devils have won at least six games through eight games for the third time in the past four seasons. It is ASU’s fifth 6-2 start or better in 11 years of the Bobby Hurley era. According to ESPN, Arizona State strength of record metric is 48th nationally through eight games with a Quad 1 win over Texas.

Seeking a 7-2 start
The Sun Devils are looking for their second consecutive 7-2 start or better to the season and third in the past four years. Should ASU claim the victory, it would be their fifth 7-2 start or better in the Bobby Hurley era.

Second half scoring
Arizona State scored 58 points in the second half against Washington State after scoring 48 in the win over Texas at the Maui Invitational. They are averaging 45.6 points in the second half in their past five games (4-1 record) and have eclipsed 40 points in four of the give. On the season, the Sun Devils are averaging 43.0 second half points per game.

Don't count us out
The Sun Devils have come back to win a game when trailing at halftime 50 times during the Bobby Hurley era. It has happened three times this season, all of which have come in the past five games. Since 2015-16, the Maroon and Gold are in the top 40 in the nation in halftime comeback victories. Here is the full list of comebacks.

Above the margins
Arizona State has been one of the best teams in the nation at taking care of the basketball. Through eight games, they rank 18th nationally and 3rd in the Big 12 in turnover margin (+5.1). ASU converted 12 USC turnovers into 13 points.

Empty the notebook

  • ASU went 23-of-27 (79.3%) against USC from the free-throw line after going 23-of-39 (78.3%) in the win over Washington State. It was the third straight game in which they have finished at 78% or better despite frequent visits. ASU only had one game with 27+ free throw attempts last year in which they shot 78% or better and have already done so three times this year
  • ASU is 51-6 (.895) when it shoots 50 percent from the field under Bobby Hurley
  • The Sun Devils are in the midst of fantastic stretch of offensive basketball. Over their past four games, ASU is averaging 86.3 points.
  • Coach Hurley's squad has scored at least 80 points in five of their eight games (5-0 record)
  • Pig Johnson has shot 10 or more free throws and drew eight or more fouls in two consecutive games
  • Massamaba Diop has 10 or more points in six of eight games
  • Coach Hurley's team got back to their style of pushing the pace, finishing with a 15-3 advantage in fast break points

Massamba making his mark
Freshman center Massamba Diop has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through eight games. He is third on the team in points (12.4) and second in rebounds (4.9), producing at that level in only 27 minutes per game. He also has a team-high 11 blocks and is third on the team with eight steals, doing all this while committing only 15 personal fouls in eight games. He has six games with at least one steal and six games with at least one block.

Bench boost
The Sun Devils hold a 206-152 (+54) advantage in bench points this season. They have outscored their opponent in the category in six of eight games (all six wins). Johnson (15 points) led the way against USC with his seventh double-digit scoring output this season. Noah Meesuen added five points as a reserve, while Marcus Adams Jr. finished with three rebounds.

Dialed in from deep
Arizona State's starting backcourt has been extremely effective from three-point range this season. Moe Odum and Bryce Ford are a combined 44-for-96 (45.8%) from deep through eight games. Ford leads the team shooting 48.6% (17-of-35) while Odum is at 44.3% (27-of-61). Both rank Top-10 in the Big 12 in three-point shooting.

T-Allen-ted
Graduate transfer forward Allen Mukeba is solidifying his reputation as one of the premier rim protectors in all of college basketball. Mukeba is second on the team with seven blocks this season, adding to his impressive career total. He is one of only 46 active NCAA Division I players with 106 or more blocks. Mukeba’s 106 career blocks are tied for the 43rd-most of any active NCAA Division I player. He is one of only 23 NCAA Division I players nationally with over 106 career blocks in 95 career games or less.

Telling the Troueth
Redshirt sophomore Sun Devil forward Santiago Trouet has fit in seamlessly since transferring in from San Diego. In the matchup with then-No. 19 Gonzaga and a formidable frontline, Trouet had 10 points and 11 rebounds while adding two blocks. Trouet had two consecutive double-doubles earlier in the year, becoming the first Sun Devil since Kimani Lawrence in 2021 to accomplish the feat. Only two Sun Devils finished with two or more double-doubles all of last year, and Trouet accomplished the feat in three games. He currently leads the team in rebounds (6.0 per game).

ASU has also faced No. 24 USC away from home as well as past/future matchups with several other programs knocking on the door of the Top-25 at neutral sites.

    The Hurley era

Bobby Hurley has won 174 games in 11 seasons at ASU, the second-most in program history.

    Career wins at ASU
    406, Ned Wulk (1957-82)
    174, Bobby Hurley (2015-present)
    159, Herb Sendek (2006-15)

About those Sun Devil wins
Coach Hurley has notched 174 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 108 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York and Hawai'i, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Texas, and West Virginia. Thanks to the recent Hawai'i trip, Hurley has now won in a total of 19 different states while at ASU.

Jeff Pendergraph Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
