San Marcos, Texas – Sun Devil Soccer scored five unanswered goals from four different players in the 5-1 win over Texas State Sunday morning in San Marcos, Texas.
"I'm delighted with both the performance of the girls and result today. We scored some lovely goals today. Three more players opened up their accounts for the year and there was some beautiful creativity from others," said head coach Graham Winkworth.
The team's five goals mark the second straight year the Sun Devils have scored five goals on the road. In 2024, ASU netted five in the victory against LSU in Baton Rouge. The team now has a 16-0-7 record in the month of August since 2018. Sierra Bergen scored her first collegiate goal to tie the match, then added another goal in the win for Arizona State (2-0-1). Bergen is now tied with teammate Cameron Valladores with a team-leading five points on the year.

Valladores registered a pair of assists to tie her career-high, notching her third straight match with a point. Freshman Addison Baltodano secured her first career goal, and Adrielle Mibe, Tano Uzezi-Itesa each captured their first collegiate assist.
Texas State (2-1-1) took an early 1-0 lead off a set piece from a free kick by the Wildcats in the eighth minute. After the early goal, the Sun Devil defense allowed just three shots on goal for the remainder of the match.
"It was very disappointing to concede an early goal on a set piece the way we did. Saying that, I think it can be a long term blessing as it not only showed us areas to focus on this week, but it also gave the team an opportunity to demonstrate what their character can be like when facing adversity," said Winkworth. "To respond the way they did, playing some lovely football was an absolute joy and a credit to the camaraderie we have within the group."
The score remained 1-0 until Sierra Bergen knocked in her first career goal from a set piece by Cameron Valladares in the 20th minute to pull the match level.
Lucy Fazackerley netted the second goal for the Sun Devils off a corner kick to give ASU a 2-1 lead in the 31st minute. The score came off a corner kick from Miki Hayashi to give the Sun Devils their first lead of the match.
Minutes before halftime, freshman Addison Baltodano scored her first collegiate goal off a set piece from freshman Tano Uzezi-Itesa to give the Sun Devils a 3-1 lead. The Sun Devils outshot the Bobcats 8-3 in the first half, contributing to the two-goal lead.

The maroon and gold remained in control in the second half when Bergen completed a brace off her head after Valladares found her inside the box to give the Sun Devils a 4-1 advantage. Tatum Thomason made it 5-1 in the 63rd minute after receiving a pass from Adrielle Mibe in stride and put away her first goal of the season from the right foot which shot past the Bobcat keeper.
Winkworth added, "Overall it has been a positive trip to Texas. We will now focus our attention on Las Vegas before we get the opportunity to cheer our Football team on Saturday and return in front of our own fans Sunday."
Pauline Nelles registered two saves in 75 minutes, Olivia Herrera made her first appearance of the season making one save in the final 15 minutes of the match.
The Sun Devils managed a season-high 19 shots, led by a game-high six shot attempts by Bergen and four shot attempts by Thomason, combining for three goals and five shots on goal.
