DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 10 Arizona State ice hockey team suffered a heartbreaking loss, 3-2, in overtime at Minnesota Duluth (11-15-1, 7-10-0 NCHC) on Friday night. The loss snapped ASU's (17-11-1, 12-7-0 NCHC) program record-setting road win streak at six games.
The Sun Devils claimed one of the three possible conference points because the game went to overtime. Western Michigan and Omaha also went to overtime on Friday with WMU ultimately claiming the overtime win. The results of both games kept the top three spots in the NCHC standings exactly the same: WMU in the lead (42 points) and ASU tied with Omaha for second place (38 points).
ASU's last three games have all gone to overtime. Last weekend in a home series against No. 6 Denver, ASU lost in overtime on Friday night before defeating the Pioneers in extra time on Saturday. This is ASU's fifth overtime loss this season.
The Sun Devils chased UMD to start the game and reach a 1-1 tie through the first 20 minutes. ASU stole the lead in the second period, 2-1, only for the Bulldogs to return the favor and tie it up once again. The teams remained knotted at 2-2 through the remainder of regulation.
Artem Shlaine scored ASU's opening goal on the power play, his second PPG of the year, to extend his point scoring streak to three consecutive games (1G, 2A). ASU boasts 17 power play goals since the New Year and, in that same span, Shlaine's tallied 21 points in 13 games.
Luke Pavicich made his 18th appearance this season and tallied 23 saves through 62 minutes and 37 seconds of play. With the loss, his season record moves to 11-7-0.
Lukas Sillinger's goal in the second period extended his point scoring streak to six games and now includes 10 points. Six games is tied for the third-longest point scoring streak by an ASU skater in program history. The two points against the Bulldogs is Sillinger's 11th multipoint game this season.
With an assist on Sillinger's goal, Bennett Schimek extended his point scoring streak to five games with eight points.
