Tempe, Ariz. No. 2/13 Sun Devil Swim and Dive is headed back to the Tar Heel state to compete in the annual NC State GAC Invite at Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. starting Thursday and concluding on Saturday. 

Competition will begin each day with preliminaries (7:30 a.m. MST) followed by the evening finals session (3:30 p.m. MST).

The teams competing with the Sun Devils are NC State, Arizona, Duke, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, and Army.

Last time at the GAC Invitational:
The Sun Devil men have won the last two NC State invites, last season they managed to set three school records and beat out the Wolfpack last year. Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow were among the record breakers in the 100 free and the 200 fly. 

Junior Deniz Ertan won an individual event last year and Erin Milligan, Zoe Summar and Charli Brown each had top-3 showings. Last year, 27 Sun Devils had top-eight finishes in the finals.

LAST TIME OUT:
The No. 2 Sun Devil men were victorious taking down then-No. 1 California 210-143 and also beating then-No. 9 Stanford 223-130 on Nov. 7-8 in Tempe. 

Sophomore Ilya Kharun continued his dominant 2024 campaign with another strong effort. The Bronze medalist secured first place wins in the 50 yard freestyle (18.67) and 100 yard butterfly (44.01). Jonny Kulow also was vital in securing important relay victories in the 800 and the 200 free relays.

Freshman Julia Ullmann secured a win in the 100 fly in 52.05, which was the fastest time of the day in the event. It's also a personal best and the fastest time by a Sun Devil in the event this season. 

Caroline Bentz was second in the 100 and 200 back, along with a third place finish in the 100 free. Alexa Reyna came in 2nd in the 1000 free (9:40.78) and Iza Adame placed third in the 100 breast (1:00.20).

BIG AWARD WINNERS:
Sun Devil Swim and Dive have won 13 Big 12 weekly awards since the season began from eight different athletes, including sweeping the swimming awards three times since the season began on Oct. 4.

Ilya Kharun earned his third weekly conference honor after winning the tri-meet, Bentz earned her fourth weekly conference honor after pacing the Sun Devils against the Golden Bears and the Cardinal.

In addition, Ullmann and Vergnes earned honors after their performances against California and Stanford.  A complete list of Big 12 award winners can be found below.

IN THE RANKINGS
The Sun Devils are ranked in both the men and women's CSCAA November polls. The men check in at No. 2 in the country, and the women moved up five spots to No. 13. Both are the only teams to represent the Big 12 one month into the season.

RETURNING OLYMPIANS:
The Sun Devils return five total Olympians who have competed in the Olympics. Deniz Ertan and Miriam Sheehan both competed in Tokyo in 2021. Tiago Behar, freshman Tolu Young and Ilya Kharun all swam for their respective countries in 2024 in Paris.

Kharun, representing Canada garnered two bronze medals in Paris, coming in the 200m and the 100m fly after coming off a freshman year where he claimed the 200y fly individual title at NCAA Championships. Similar to his teammate Matheson, he'll also be competing in Budapest at the short-course world championships. Kharun currently holds the school record in the 100 fly (43.95) and 200 fly (1:37.93).
