SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sun Devil Lacrosse earned a Pac-12 Player of the Week honor for the fifth time this season, the conference announced on Monday.
Olivia Hood was selected as the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Arizona State has now had 12 individuals receive the top weekly conference honor in Head Coach Tim McCormack's two seasons, after previously only winning the award three times in the two prior seasons.
Of the possible 18 recipients of a Pac-12 Player of the Week award in 2021, nine have been Sun Devils. ASU has earned six offensive and three defensive player of the week selections, an indication of the balance of the team.
Olivia Hood – Defensive Player of the Week
Since returning from an injury midseason, Olivia Hood has been a key part of a much-improved Sun Devil defensive unit. She finished the weekend with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, helping Arizona State earn a split with the Bay Area schools.
"Sunday's performance was just another great game day and a day to get better," Hood reflected. "As a defensive unit we really locked it down, we were all playing on house money."
In the 11-7 victory over Cal, Hood and the Sun Devil defense overwhelmed the Golden Bears' attack, giving up only seven goals, including one over the final 14 minutes. Hood's aggressiveness and relentless pursuit of her matchup were big factors in containing the Cal offense.
She also provided a spark offensively, clearing a ball and taking it coast-to-coast to earn a free-position attempt. Hood cashed in on the opportunity, scoring her first goal of the season and sixth of her career.
"I was glad that I could get down on the attack end for a quick second, I miss those girls during the game haha, but it wouldn't have been possible without the defensive unit helping clear that ball over," Hood added.
