TEMPE – Samantha Noennig set the NCAA lead in the women's shot put, and Bianca Tinoco and Tommi Hintnaus both moved into the top-10 in Sun Devil history in their respective events Saturday on the final day of the 40th Sun Angel Classic.
"I've always enjoyed the Sun Angel Classic and how it involves the community," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "I think tonight was another great display of that and a great reflection of how our sport can bring the community together."
Noennig didn't take long to jump into the collegiate lead, taking the top spot with her fifth throw of the day and her fifth throw of the season in the shot put. She launched the shot 17.56m/57-7.5 feet, setting an outdoor personal best in the process.
With the national lead in the shot, the Devils now have two women in at the top of the NCAA in the throws with Beatrice Llano owning the No. 1 place in the hammer throw.
Bianca Tinoco finished ninth in a premier 800-meter race that didn't disappoint. The fast race saw all 16 competitors finishing with a time better than 2:10. Tinoco managed to clock a personal best 2:06.09, which put her up to eighth in school history. The mark moved her into the top-15 in the NCAA West Region and the top-five in the Pac-12.
"The breakout performance for us was Bianca in the 800," Kraft said. "I really feel much better about the women than I have in a couple of years, and I think you can see why from the results we had today."
In one of the first events of the day, Tommi Hintnaus continued her impressive outdoor campaign when she cleared 3.86m/12-8 feet and finished fifth in the premier women's pole vault. The clearance moved her to eighth in Sun Devil history in the event only two weeks after she jumped into the top-10 for the first time.
Ian Schulz set a personal best in and won the men's shot put, and also finished third in the discus. Schulz's new shot put PR sent him above 17 meters in the event outdoors for the first time in his Sun Devil career at 17.06m/55-11.75 feet.
While Saturday wrapped up Arizona State's home season, the crowd at Sun Angel Stadium sent 14 Sun Devil seniors out with an ovation in their final home meet of their storied careers.
For senior All-American Jessica Barreira, the occasion was also her 2019 outdoor debut in the long jump. With a leap of 6.20m/20-4.25 feet, Barreira wasted no time making a statement in the conference. The MPSF indoor champion now leads the Pac-12 in the long jump and sits in third in the triple jump.
Another senior William Paulson headlined the men's premier mile, and he was joined in the event by fellow senior John Reniewicki and newcomer Fearghal Curtin. The trio all finished in the top-10 with Paulson leading the way in sixth.
Sophomore Adam Meyer set the pace for the premier mile, and earlier in the day the Arizona native set a huge personal best in the 800, crossing the line in 1:51.99 and moving into the top-10 in the conference.
Freshman Nia Brown had a big day in the sprints, clocking a personal best and finishing second in the premier 100, and running the third leg on the Sun Devils' second-place 4x100-meter relay team.
Brown finished the 100 in 11.62 seconds, but first combined with Josephine Anokye, Anya Bailey and senior Courtnee Oglesby to run a 45.56 in the 4x1.
"I think we did a great job in the 4x1's and the men did a great job through two legs," Kraft said. "Holland and Marcus really put us in good position, but there was a little slip up later on. As we progress and get Austin Kratz back, I think that brings us down to a sub-40 second team."
The Sun Devils also got top-three finishes in the men's long jump from senior Derrick Monroe in his outdoor debut (third), Sydnee Larkin in the triple jump with a leap that landed her at sixth in school history, and newcomer Marcus Reaves in the 100-meter dash.
"We're now officially five weeks out from the Pac-12 Championships so you've got to be able to put people on the track," Kraft said. "We had a few people dinged up and we don't have great depth, so you have to be a little judicious about how you use people at this point in the season."
The conclusion of the Sun Devils' home season means they'll finish their outdoor campaign on the road. Next weekend ASU will head to College Station, Texas, and San Diego seeking some more regional qualifying marks.
