TUCSON – Although the Arizona State track and field team spent Saturday in Tucson at the Desert Heat Classic, the Sun Devils made Roy P. Drachman Stadium feel like home as they had one of their best outings of the season, winning eight individual events and putting a handful of marks in the school record book.
"Today was a good day for the Sun Devils," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "We really made some moves today and one of the big ones was Josephine with her PR's in the 100 and 200."
On the track, Josephine Anokye headlined a big day for the Sun Devil sprinters when she clocked the fastest 100-and 200-meter time by an ASU woman this decade.
She finished second in the 100 down in Tucson and crossed the line in 11.49 seconds, moving into the top-20 in the NCAA West Region and to 10th in school history. At twice the distance, Anokye was twice as good, this time recording the 17th fastest time in the country this season by running 23.00.
The 200-meter time was more than a top-20 time in the NCAA. Anokye moved into a tie for third in the Pac-12 and claimed sole possession of third in school history in the event.
Anokye already had one of the best 200-meter times on the descending order list, but with her marks today, she joins three other Sun Devils (Jessica Barreira, Samantha Noennig and Bianca Tinoco) with top-25 marks in two or more events.
Noennig started the day with a dominant win in the women's discus throw. Despite fouling her first two throws, Noennig got off a 55.06m/180-7-foot throw on her third attempt to make the final and eventually win the event by 14 feet. The mark moved her to second in the Pac-12 and 12th in the West Region.
Her day wasn't over though as she would go on to take the shot put title over an Olympian and former NCAA champion under the lights at Drachman Stadium.
Noennig matched her personal best of 17.91m/58-9.25 feet, which is the same mark she threw to win the NCAA indoor title back in March. The throw was good enough to get the sophomore a second win in Tucson as she bested former NCAA champion and Olympic finalist Raven Saunders.
Kaylee Antill took seventh in the discus, but came back a couple of hours later to finish third in the women's hammer throw just behind the top-collegiate finisher of the day, NCAA-leader Beatrice Llano.
Seri Geisler gave the Sun Devils three wins out of the four women's throws events when she won the javelin with ease, besting second-place by more than 10 feet.
Senior All-American Barreira opened her big evening with a big personal best in the long jump. She became the first woman in the Pac-12 this season to jump farther that 21 feet when she soared 6.44m/21-1.5 on her first attempt of the day. She only took three jumps as she rested up for the triple jump later in the evening, but still managed to take the win.
Barreira moved to fourth in the West and into seventh in school history in the outdoor long jump, giving her ASU all-time top-10 marks in the indoor and outdoor long jump, indoor and outdoor triple jump, javelin throw and heptathlon.
Later in the evening, Barreira got it done on the runway again in the women's triple jump when she once again hit an outdoor best mark of 12.87m/42-2.75 that moved her to second in school history where she sits only behind former Pac-12 champion and All-American Keyasia Tibbs.
"Across the board our women really had a good day," Kraft said. "We kind of take Sam Noennig for granted because she's so good, but she set a lifetime best in two events today. She's a big piece of a throws group that I think will do a lot for us at the conference meet."
Back on the runway, Derrick Monroe set a personal best of 7.56m/24-9.75 feet in the long jump that moved him into a tie for 21st in the region and second in the conference with just two weeks to go until the Pac-12 Championships.
Senior Matt Eckles made the most out of his final regular season meet in his storied Sun Devil career by placing himself on the school's top-10 list. He had already won the contest with his clearance of 5.00m, but the 2017 Pac-12 champion kept going and eventually made it over 5.31m/17-5.0 feet to move to fifth in ASU history.
In the women's version, Tommi Hintnaus' super sophomore season continued when she set an outdoor personal best and moved closer to overtaking Clara Carpenter and Alana Waterford on the school record list. She finished third with a clearance of 3.97m/13-0.25 feet, which put her into scoring position in the conference at seventh.
Newcomer Marcus Reaves turned heads in the sprints as he finished third in the 200 in 20.79, and ran 10.51 to finish fifth in the 100, and senior Kyle Shinn joined in on the winning ways and took first in his final regular season outing by kicking late and taking first in the men's 1,500-meter run by seven-tenths of a second.
ASU will return to Tucson in two weeks for the Pac-12 Championships where the Sun Devils will go toe-to-toe with the best in the conference as well as battle the Wildcats for two important Territorial Cup Series points.
