TEMPE – Saturday was all about progression for the Sun Devils as they closed their second home meet of the season with a handful of personal bests and wins at the final day of the ASU Invitational.
"For us, today was about making progress, so the highlight was seeing that progress," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "It starts with the 4x1. As good as we looked, we kind of stumbled on some of the handoffs, so there's promise there where last year there wasn't much."
ASU got off to a winning start in the first track event of the day when the Sun Devil women's quartet won the 4x100-meter relay. A few events later, Alexandra Williams won the 100-meter hurdles in a wind-legal PR of 13.88 seconds. She was followed just behind by newcomer Jeminise Parris who crossed the line in second with a time of 14.05 seconds.
Two Sun Devil newcomers swept the men's and women's 400-meter crowns with Steven Champlin once again leaving the rest of the field behind with a 46.70, nearly two seconds clear of second place. Josephine Anokye won the women's race in 55.16 seconds, and Courtnee Oglesby took third in the same race.
"One of the guys who has kind of been a little overlooked is Steven Champlin because he hasn't run a blistering time yet in the 400," Kraft said. "The fact that he comes out and has won the quarter by two seconds two weeks in-a-row and splits a 46.0 in the 4x4 shows you the work is there."
In the 100, Nia Brown topped her PR by six-hundredths of a second to bring her best down to 11.63 and win the event. Holland Cabara and Marcus Reaves went two-three in the men's race and Cabara nearly gave the Devils another sweep, missing out on the win by one-hundredth of a second with a time of 10.46 seconds.
"It was good to see Nia Brown win her first collegiate race and Holland and Marcus come back from the 4x1 to run 10.40 and 10.50 in the open 100," Kraft said. "We're starting to see the kids understand their responsibilities and their roles on the team."
Katie Eidem won the women's high jump and Elijah Hughes took second in the men's high jump, but cleared the same height as the first-place finisher.
The Devils got another sweep from Jessica Barreira and Ivan Hinson in the men's and women's triple jumps. The MPSF triple jump champion Barreira set an outdoor PR in the event with her leap of 12.74m/41-9.75 feet. The outing was just her first of the outdoor season and put her into the top-10 in the West region with two months to go until the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento, California.
ASU's home season isn't done, but the Devils will head elsewhere for competition next weekend before returning to Sun Angel Stadium April 5-6 for the 40th Sun Angel Classic.
