TEMPE – Steven Champlin and Samantha Noennig led the way for Sun Devils at the second and final day of the Baldy Castillo Invitational as Champlin looked sharp on the track in his Sun Devil debut and Noennig finished as the top-collegian in the discus throw to open her outdoor campaign.
The All-American 400-meter runner lined up for his first race donning the pitchfork Saturday and didn't disappoint in his ASU debut. Champlin won the 400-meter dash in 46.80 seconds, nearly two seconds better than the second-place finisher.
"It was good to have Steven in a Sun Devil uniform open up the way he did," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "He beat a 45-second quarter-miler to get that win, then he came back and led-off with basically the same time in the 4x4, so that shows you where his fitness is at this point in the season."
Just a week after she won the NCAA indoor shot put title, Noennig opened her outdoor season with a personal best heave in the women's discus competition.
She finished as the top-collegiate athlete in the event with her mark of 53.92m/176-11 feet, a distance nearly six-feet better than her best throw from 2018 that earned her a place in the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
Ian Schulz also set a personal best in the discus and finished third in the men's contest behind two All-Americans from a year ago.
"Coming off of indoors, I felt really good about our team in the field events," Kraft said. "When we compete outdoors, we add events that we're good in with the discus and the javelin being the big ones this weekend. We had Sam and Ian perform well in the disc, Jess and Cerah had a great start in the javelin last night and today we saw what Carlan and Connery could do."
In their ASU debuts, freshmen Carlan Naisant and Connery McLaughlin placed the javelin out over 200 feet with Naisant finishing fourth with a throw of 64.00m/209-11 and McLaughlin recording a 61.39m/201-5 mark.
The excellent start to the season for the field events continued in the men's high jump where Elijah Hughes finished second with a clearance of 2.11m/6-11 feet. His season-opening jump was less than an inch off of his collegiate best mark that he set last April down in Tucson.
On the Joe Selleh Track, the Devils had a handful of top-five places and personal bests, including a pair of second-place finishes from Adam Meyer and Bianca Tinoco in the men's and women's 800-meter runs, respectively.
Freshman Nia Brown clocked an 11.69 in the 100-meter dash to put up the fastest time by a Sun Devil woman since 2016. Josephine Anokye took second in the women's 200 and Marcus Reaves gabbed fourth in the men's 100.
"I was happy to see that we looked more comfortable outside," Kraft said. "To see someone like Josephine come out here and run 23 in the 200 outdoors when she was running 24 indoors shows that she's feeling good and ready to run outdoors."
In Ian Kebenei's first collegiate steeplechase, the freshman finished third overall in 9:14.95, and Courtney Lewis finished third in the women's steeple.
The Sun Devils are back at home next weekend as they welcome teams from across the country for the ASU Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium Friday and Saturday.
