FLAGSTAFF – It didn't take long for Sun Devil sophomore Samantha Noennig to put herself in position to make her first NCAA Indoor Championship as she set a huge personal best in the shot put at the NAU Friday Night Duals in Flagstaff.
With her fourth throw of the afternoon, Noennig launched the shot 17.62m/57-9.75 feet to take second in the competition and move to second on the descending order list in the event behind UCLA's Alyssa Wilson, who set the leading mark today in Flagstaff.
"The performance of the meet was without a question Sam Noennig in the shot," director of track and field Greg Kraft said. "We've had a long history of great throwers here at ASU and she's already up there with them. With her and some of the other throwers coach Blutreich has developed, we'll be able to replace a big piece that we lost in Maggie Ewen."
The mark was good enough to put her in elite ASU company as one of six women in school history to break 17 meters. She moved up to third on the school record list ahead of ASU legends Leslie Deniz, Anna Jelmini and Jessica Pressley.
Only Sarah Stevens' mark from her senior season, and Maggie Ewen's 19.20m/63-0.00 mark from last season sit ahead of Noennig's throw from Friday.
Fellow sophomore Cole Riddle led a top-three sweep in the men's pole vault with his clearance of 5.30m/17-4.5 feet that was just an inch shy of his indoor personal best.
ASU swept the long jump events with Jessica Barreira winning the women's long jump and newcomer Derrick Monroe taking first in the men's event. Barreira would go on to win the triple jump later in the day with freshman Sydnee Larkin finishing just behind her in second.
ASU had five more runner-up finishes from Tommi Hintnaus in the women's pole vault, Adam Meyer in the men's 800, Elijah Hughes in the high jump, Ivan Hinson in the triple jump and Nia Brown in the 300-meter dash.
Brown's Sun Devil debut also included fourth-place finish in the 60-meter dash. The freshman was the top finisher for the Devils in both events.
Elsewhere on the track, Marcus Reaves finished sixth in the 60 in his Sun Devil debut and Devin Cadena took fourth in the 300.
"One of the reasons we come up here is to establish how you go about business competing," Kraft said. "When you have a new team with new personalities, you want to see how they handle stress or how they take direction. For a lot of the things that happened today, we'll be able to measure when we come back up here next week."
The Devils will return to Flagstaff next week for the Lumberjack Team Invitational.
