TEMPE, Ariz. – After spending two of the last three weekends on the road participating in several prestigious fall tournaments, the 2019 Sun Devil Women's Lacrosse team returns to Tempe this weekend to host the annual Maroon and Gold Scrimmage. The event will take place on Sunday, October 28 at 12 pm at Sun Devil Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
"It's a great opportunity to compete one last time this fall, especially on our home field," Coach Martinez Connor stated.
This will be fans and supporters' first chance to check out the 2019 Sun Devil Lacrosse team, as the scrimmage will be open to the public and admission is free. The weekend will wrap up the Sun Devils' fall competition schedule and will serve as a chance for the program to recognize award winners from the inaugural season as well as honoring standouts from fall competition at a brunch taking place the Saturday before the scrimmage.
"We are excited to honor our award winners from this past spring at our brunch on Saturday, in addition to those who have stood out his fall," Coach Martinez Connor stated.
The teams for the Maroon and Gold Scrimmage were selected by the coaching staff after evaluation of performance in practices and in game situations throughout the fall. The roster will be split into two teams, one representing and wearing gold, with the remainder of the roster making up the maroon squad. The purpose of the matchup is to simulate a regular season game, with each half running 30 minutes. The rules of the game will be consistent with a regular season game.
"We announced the Maroon & Gold teams at the end of September and have had competitions on Fridays and scrimmages on Saturdays," Coach Martinez Connor revealed. "These activities have helped them gel as a team and prepare for the ultimate Maroon & Gold matchup this weekend."
"Coach Fitzgerald will be directing the Gold team and Coach Conlon will be in charge of the Maroon team," Coach Martinez Connor said. "The teams have been split evenly and have been very competitive throughout the fall."
"In order to aspire to be the best, you have to compete with the best, and I believe we have truly done that this fall," Coach Martinez Connor said.
A grueling fall schedule supports the point, as Sun Devil Lacrosse faced off with some of the nation's stiffest competition, including defending national champion James Madison as well as NCAA Tournament Participants Navy, Towson, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins. The Sun Devil coaching staff expects the experience will pay off in the long run for the program.
"We have traveled from coast to coast playing the reigning national champion as well as four other top-ranked teams," Coach Martinez Connor remarked. "For the most part, our players have risen to the occasion, and for that I am proud. We certainly have work to do before the spring season, but I am happy with our growth and development thus far."
Fans are invited to Sun Devil Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium in spring 2019 as the Sun Devils embark on their second season as a Division I program and supporters can also take advantage of the free admission by attending the Maroon and Gold scrimmage taking place on Sunday, October 28 at 12 pm.
