Sun Devils Split vs. UA at Duel in the DesertSun Devils Split vs. UA at Duel in the Desert
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Sun Devil track and field program wrapped up their final home meet and regular season meet of 2017 on Saturday evening at the Duel in the Desert against the University of Arizona.

ASU's women -- ranked No. 21 by USTFCCCA -- captured the victory 97.5 to 93.5, while the No. 43 Arizona men won 102-94. The Sun Devil women have now defeated the No. 27 Wildcats at the dual meet three-straight years, while the UA men won for the first time since 2006. The dual meet has no impact on the Territorial Cup® Series.

"We've been competing for four months now between indoor and outdoor, so you see people create momentum for themselves with their performance, and you see some people suffer injuries and how they deal with adversity," said head coach Greg Kraft. "As we depart for the Pac-12 Championships in two weeks, obviously you're going to take people that have overcome adversity and created momentum. I tell the team, 'Champions win Championships'."

Two of those athletes that continued to strive in the throwing events are redshirt junior Maggie Ewen and senior Kyle Long.

After again breaking the American collegiate record on Friday in the hammer throw, Ewen bounced back on Saturday to win both the discus throw and shot put for the Devils. She will enter the Pac-12 Championships holding the best mark in all three events.

Long had quite a weekend, throwing for a new personal best in all three throwing events – the hammer throw, discus throw and shot put. The senior -- participating in his last home event of his career -- won the discus with a toss of 58.38m (191-6.25), which ranks 17th in the country. His hammer throw from Friday afternoon now ranks him 21st nationally. His discus mark ranks first in the Pac-12, while his hammer throw is the second best.

Fellow senior Tom Anderson had one of his best shot put performances of the season, finishing second in the event with a throw of 18.26m (59-10.75).

Elsewhere in the field events, Matt Eckles cleared the bar at 5.13m (16-10.00) for a new outdoor personal best. The redshirt sophomore had a breakout afternoon in just his fourth even to the season after returning from a minor injury.

In the men's high jump, redshirt sophomore Joey Bryant leapt 2.15m (7-0.50) for a new collegiate best, which ranks 24th nationally and sixth within the conference.

On the track, the men's 4x400 relay of Herb Polk, Jeremy Wright, Brandon Hasson and Drelan Bramwell shined in the final event of the evening. The four of them ran their fastest time of the season at 3:07.21, which ranks third in the Pac-12 and 22nd nationally – if you disregard team multiples.

Redshirt sophomore Liam Henshaw will compete at the Pac-12 Multi Event Championships this coming weekend in Eugene, Ore., while the rest of the team will compete the following weekend at Tracktown USA on May 13-14.
