Ewen Picks Up Where She Left Off, 15 Others Set Personal BestsEwen Picks Up Where She Left Off, 15 Others Set Personal Bests
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Sun Devil track & field squad opened up with 16 personal bests and an additional 10 collegiate bests at the NAU Friday Night Duels at J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.

"Overall, when you look at the results, the men's team is what we expected being well balanced and more experienced," said head coach Greg Kraft. "They went about their business. The women were a continuation of last year, with the successes dominated by the field events."

Redshirt junior Maggie Ewen – who wrapped up her 2016 outdoor season as a two-time All-American – picked up where she left off, blowing away her previous personal best in the shot put. Her toss of 17.50m (57-5.00) moved her to the second-best throw all-time in ASU indoor history.

"Maggie had quite a day in the shot put, throwing five feet further than her previous personal best from last year," said Kraft. "We believe it is the top throw in the country right now."

Her performance earned her first place in the opening invitational by nearly 10 feet.

Over in the weight throw, Ewen finished in second place with a mark of 19.76m (64-10.00), while redshirt freshman Kaylee Antill placed third in her first collegiate event with a throw of 18.87m (61-11.00) -- also a career best.

"Kaylee really was a nice addition in the field events today," said Kraft. "She was definitely one of our highlights on the women's side."

Elsewhere, senior Kyle Long picked up a first-place finish in the weight throw as well, hitting a new personal best at 19.01m (62-4.50).

In the women's pole vault, junior Kristiana Warth cleared a new personal best at 4.00m (13-1.50) as the top finisher, while fellow junior Athena Masolini cleared a new best at 3.90m (12-9.50). Warth's mark now ranks 7th all-time in the ASU indoor record books, while Masolini cracks the top-10 at No. 9.

While Stanford transfer Garrett Starkey did not clear a new best, he did finish second for the Devils in the pole vault in his debut in the maroon & gold.

Fellow newcomer Joey Bryant had quite the Division I debut in the jumps, placing second in both the high jump (6-10.75) and in the long jump (22-5.25) for ASU.

On the track, senior Keyasia Tibbs led the ladies in the 60-meter dash with a new best of 7.65 for fourth place. Freshman Sha'Maya Flanagan was very impressive in the sprints, earning 9th out of 36 in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.77, as well as 3rd out of 33 in the 200-meter dash at 25.04.

For the men, senior Herb Polk placed first in the men's 400-meter dash out of 17 sprinters with a new personal record of 46.65. College of the Sequoias transfer Drelan Bramwell impressed in his ASU debut as well, clocking 6.82 – a new personal best – in the 60-meter dash. He also ran the third leg of the men's 4x400 relay, who finished second.

In the rare 600-meter event, junior Melese Crozier took the top spot out of 24 competitors with a time of 1:33.21.

"It was nice to have Melese back on the track after she suffered her foot injury last season," said Kraft. "She was the highlight for the women on the track tonight."

The Sun Devils will get back to training and preparing for the Texas A&M Aggie Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 21 in College Station.

"Next week will be a nice opportunity for us to assess where we are as a team," said Kraft.
