TEMPE – The 2016 season might be over for the Arizona State University baseball program, but the bats are still swinging for 15 different Sun Devils representing nine teams in seven Summer Collegiate Baseball Leagues over the next couple months.
The Northwoods League is the most well-represented as far as Sun Devils with four ASU players currently in action on two different teams. Liam Jenkins has a solid 3.08 ERA in 10 games thus far and is tied for the third most appearances among the team's pitchers. Gage Canning appeared in nine games, batting .222 with a double, three walks and three runs.
Garvin Alston Jr. and Grant Schneider are both working their arms with the Kalamazoo Growlers with Alston striking out 20 in 14.0 innings with a 3.85 ERA and Schneider also racking up the K's with 20 in 15.1 innings pitched thus far.
Over in the New England Collegiate League, three Sun Devils represent the Vermont Mountaineers in Chris Isbell, Fitz Stadler and Jeremy McCuin. Isbell has been impressive on the mound with a 2.61 ERA with a save and six strikeouts to just one walk in 10.1 innings pitched. Stadler has posted a 2-0 record in despite not receiving a start, logging a 3.60 ERA in 15.0 innings with 13 strikeouts to six walks. McCuin has stepped things up recently with his average jumping up to .270 in 18 games with a pair of doubles and nine walks.
Staying at home are two Devils in the Arizona Collegiate Wood Bat League, with both Zach Cerbo and Daniel Williams competing for the Lizards – currently at 16-5-1 and on top of the league standings. In limited plate appearances, Cerbo has a .357 average in eight games with an impressive .643 slugging percentage while Williams is batting .238 in his limited plate appearances.
A pair of pitchers represent ASU on the Bellingham Bells in the West Coast League in Zach Dixon and Gio Lopez. Lopez has started three games with a 1-0 record and an exceptional 2.25 ERA, striking out 10 and allowing just five earned runs in 20 innings. Dixon started one game for the Bells, striking out four in the appearance.
In the California Collegiate League, Tyler Williams is on the top-ranked Academy Barons and Reagan Todd on the Santa Barbara Foresters. Williams has a home run, five RBIs with a .250 average and a .368 OBP and is in the top half of the roster in most offensive categories. Todd has been exceptional, starting three games and maintaining a 2.05 ERA in 22.0 innings - the third highest total on the team - while posting a whopping 6:1 strikeout to walk ratio with 24 strikeouts to six walks. Williams holds the fifth-best average on his Baron squad at .265 with a home run and eight walks drawn.
Connor Higgins is competing for the Mat Su Miners in the Alaska Baseball League, where he is second on the team with 29.0 innings pitched, sitting at 3-1 in the summer with a 3.41 ERA and 17 strikeouts.
