Men's Hoops Wins Fourth Straight Behind Prewitt's 26 points

May 21, 2001

Sydney, Australia--The Arizona State men's basketball team won its fourth game in five days on its Australian Tour with a 106-79 win over the Australian Institute of Sport, as five Sun Devils were in double-digits in a game that was tied after one period.

The game was an up-tempo game as AIS had several good athletes, as its team was made up of the best 18-and-under players in Australia, many of them above 6-7, and four 12-minute quarters were played. AIS jumped out to an early lead and the scored was tied at 29 after the first period as AIS was 11-of-19 (.579) from the field. But Tanner Shell opened the second quarter with consecutive three-pointers and then Chad Prewitt added a three-point play and ASU never looked back and led by as much as 30 (73-43). ASU outscored AIS 30-7 in the second period.

AIS cut the lead to 16 at one point but ASU put the game away in the second half with 56.3 percent shooting (18-of-32). ASU also was 7-of-18 (.389) from the three-point stripe and outscored the AIS bench 35-26.

Chad Prewitt led ASU with 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-3 from the three-point stripe. He also added six boards. Shawn Redhage posted 20 points off the bench, while Tommy Smith added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Awvee Storey added 13 points and six boards while Kyle Dodd had 10 points and five assists.

Donnell Knight suffered a mild concussion early in the second period after taking an elbow to the head while trying to grab a rebound. Knight had five rebounds in just under six minutes of playing time.

ASU is scheduled to play again on Friday, May 25, at the Australia Basketball Complex against the Cairns Marlins at 8 p.m. (3 a.m. on Friday in Phoenix). Cairns is about a three-hour plane ride north of Sydney, and ASU will head to Cairns on Wednesday, May 23. ASU returns to Phoenix on Saturday, May 26.
