Helped turn around Arizona State program as it reached the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in 22 seasons in 2002-03 with a 20-12 record. Ended his career as ASU's second-best shot blocker with 167. Did not miss a game in 122-game career and also takes a lot of pride in not missing a practice. Phoenix area product who grew to 6-8 late in high school career and was just 175 pounds when he entered Arizona State in fall of 1999. One of six freshmen in the ASU lineup in 1999-2000 as Rob Evans had to rebuild program and Smith did not have chance to redshirt. Played with ASU on an Australian 10-day tour in May of 2001 and then played in Greece under Mike Jarvis as part of a collegiate touring team that August. On schedule to receive sociology degree in this August. Finished his career with 1,123 points, 20th on the Sun Devil career scoring list. Competed at Tim Grgurich-run camp in Las Vegas in August of 2002.
As a senior, led Pac-10 in blocks per game at 2.16 with 69 in 32 games and earned All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention. Earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors with back-to-back double-doubles during final weekend of regular season with 24 points (matching career high), 11 boards and four blocks vs. Oregon on March 6 and 17 points and 11 boards as ASU clinched fourth-place in the Pac-10 with a 74-64 win over Oregon State on March 8. Second on the team in rebounds (6.2 per game) and assists (85). Had four double-doubles on year including career-high 16 rebounds vs. Washington on Jan. 9. Also had career-high seven assists vs. Bucknell on Dec. 27.
As a junior, scored in double digits in 10 of the final 15 games and posted season-high 22 points vs. No. 21 California on Feb. 28. Also was 11-of-26 (.423) from the three-point stripe in Pac-10 play and had 19 double-digit scoring games.
As a sophomore, averaged 12.5 points in final 15 games and put his name in the Pac-10 record books with an 11-of-11 effort from the field against Washington on Feb. 10, 2001. Also had a career-high 24 points in that game. Posted 15 double-digit scoring games.
As a freshman, played in all 32 games and averaged 4.9 points and 13.4 minutes as ASU won 19 games with six freshmen seeing playing time. Was 31-of-42 (.738) from the free throw line in his final 26 games. Had six blocks, the most by a Sun Devil since 1997, vs. Oregon State on Feb. 3, 2000. Had eight points and six boards in only start of the year at Washington on Feb. 12 as ASU swept a Pac-10 road trip for the first time since 1996.
