Chicago native Awvee Storey was one of the top rebounders in the Pac-10 the past three seasons. At 6-6, he led the league in 2000-2001 at 9.1 rebounds per game and the player who was second, Dan Gadzuric of UCLA at 8.6 per game, was 6-11. He sat out the 1998-99 season after transferring following his freshman season (1997-98) at Illinois and then made an immediate impact and gave the young squad some veteran leadership despite being only a sophomore. Storey has excellent athletic ability and defended guards, forwards and when necessary, a center. He posted 16 double-doubles in his 85-game career and earned his Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies degree with concentrations in communications and sociology at ASU's Dec. 15 mid-year commencement.
In his senior year, he suffered a swollen retina vs. Washington on Feb. 9 and bleeding beneath the retina kept him out of action for three games until Feb. 28. He had started the previous six games before the Washington game and then missed the next three contests. Posted a career-high 29 points at UNLV on March 12 in final game and had 15 points on 7-of-9 (.778) shooting vs. No. 17 Stanford on March 2. Also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards vs. UC Riverside on Nov. 27.
Storey led the league with 9.1 boards per game in his junior season (2000-2001) and had six 20-point games and 11 double-doubles. In Pac-10 play, he averaged 12.4 points and his 9.7 rebounds per game also was a conference best. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 and posted five straight double-figure rebounding games from Jan. 6-20. He had 16 points and 16 boards in season finale at top-ranked Stanford despite playing with a laceration of the left eyeball suffered on Mar. 8 at California. He earned Pac-10 Player of the Week after notching 17 points and seven boards at Oregon State on Feb. 1 and 23 points and 12 boards on Feb. 4 at Oregon. Other top games included 26 points and 15 rebounds on 12-of-18 shooting at No. 24 UCLA on Feb. 17, 11 points and 11 rebounds (seven offensive) vs. USC on Feb. 15, 21 points and 16 boards vs. UCLA on Jan. 18 and 17 points and 13 boards vs. Cal on Jan. 6. Despite suffering a partially torn lateral rectus muscle in the left eye the week of the San Diego State game, he posted 21 points and 11 boards. He also added 21 points and 12 boards vs. MAC Champion Kent State on Nov. 25 and had 26 points vs. Mid-Continent champion Southern Utah on Nov. 17.
Storey helped lead ASU to 19 wins in 1999-2000 as he started in 27 of the 29 games. He posted 13 points and 14 rebounds vs. New Mexico State on March 15 in a NIT first-round game. He posted 12 points and 13 rebounds (eight offensive) vs. UCLA on Feb. 17 after posting 21 points and seven rebounds at UCLA on Jan. 22. Other top games included 23 points and 14 rebounds at USC on Jan. 20, 14 rebounds vs. Washington on Jan. 13, 14 rebounds (eight offensive) at Cal on Jan. 8 and 17 points, seven boards (six offensive) and three steals vs. Penn State on Dec. 29. He was named to ASU Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team. In early non-conference action, he had 22 points (9-of-13 field goals) and seven boards at BYU on Dec. 7 and 14 points and 10 boards vs. No. 20 Texas on Nov. 25 in Puerto Rico.
Storey originally signed with Tennessee out of high school, then attended New Hampton Prep in 1996-97. He averaged 30 points and 12 boards at New Hampton. He worked for Fox Sports Arizona as a production department intern in the summer of 2001.
