East Lansing, Mich. – Sun Devil Wrestling won five titles in their season opener at the Michigan State Open Saturday in East Lansing. Fourteen Sun Devils placed third or better, with seven making the finals in their respective weight classes.
Arizona State will have its home opener next Saturday, Nov. 14, at 11 a.m., hosting Hope International, Arizona Christian and Embry-Riddle with three duals and a tournament-style meet. Single match tickets are available now for all home matches this season.
In his Sun Devil debut, 125-pounder Christian Castillo took home the title in the 125 fresh/soph bracket with five tech-fall victories and outscoring opponents 98-21 in five matches. Castillo scored the most points among all wrestlers (98) and had the most tech-falls on the day.
Sophomore Kyler Larkin defended his title, winning at 141 pounds and going 5-0. Last year, he won the title at 133 lbs. Larkin had two falls and two tech-falls en route to a title. Larkin managed to score 80 points, which was the second-most among all athletes. His older brother, Kaleb Larkin, went 4-0 and had three tech-falls to secure the title at 174 lbs.
Wrestling at 157 -lbs, Gabriel Delgado won the title in the fresh/soph bracket after earning the deciding point on ride time in the final.
Heavyweight freshman Ben Szuba took home first place with a fall 91 seconds into his match over Cael Leisgang (Wisconsin).
