Landon Hairston hit his 28th home run of the season, giving him the record for most home runs in a single season in school history.

SURPRISE, Ariz. – No. 21 Sun Devil Baseball applied pressure out the gates and never took its foot off the pedal, advancing to the semifinals of the 2026 Big 12 Baseball Tournament presented by Allstate behind a 10-2 rout over No. 25 Cincinnati late Thursday evening at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Ariz.

Landon Hairston became Arizona State’s all-time single season home run leader with his 28th of the season to break the game open in the fourth inning as the Sun Devils (37-18) will take part in their first conference semifinal in program history against ninth-ranked West Virginia tomorrow at 8 p.m AZT.

Dominic Smaldino and Matt Polk also homered for an ASU offense that recorded 12 hits and didn’t let the Bearcats (37-20) off the hook for their four errors and poor fielding throughout the game. ASU recorded four two-out RBIs, had the leadoff runner reach in four of eight innings and successfully advanced runners at a .522 clip. In addition to taking advantage of the four errors, ASU stole three bags and struck out just five times  as it never gave Cincinnati a chance to get back into the game.

After the start time to the game was delayed nearly 45 minutes due to the earlier games in the day, Kole Klecker battled through 4.0 tough innings and allowed just one run despite walking six and striking out five - twice stranding the bases loaded. Taylor Penn moved to 6-0 on the season as he came out of the bullpen and dominated the potent Bearcat line, allowing just one hit and striking out five - the second-lowest total of its season - with no walks in his scoreless outing. The two runs scored by UC were tied for the fourth-lowest of the season and lowest since April 17 at UCF (L, 1-7).

Turning point
It wasn’t a pretty first inning for starter Kole Klecker as he walked three, gave up a double and had a wild pitch. But the veteran somehow got out of all of that with just one run allowed and stranded the bases loaded. After a quick quick double play in the bottom half of the inning, Dean Toigo got the two-out rally started with a base knock and Dominic Smaldino delivered with a big boy homer to deep opposite right center for a two-run shot and a 2-1 ASU lead that it would not relinquish the remainder of the game. Klecker battled through his control issues to get through three more innings of scoreless baseball, allowing ASU to creep ahead in the contest.

Big moment
After Klecker posted his first 1-2-3 inning of the game with the Sun Devils holding on to a 5-1 lead through the top of the fourth, Landon Hairston effectively put the game away in historic fashion. After PJ Moutzouridis led the frame off with a triple, Hairston ripped a 113 MPH line drive into the Cincinnati bullpen for his 28th home run of the season - a two-run shot to give ASU a 7-1 lead while also putting Hairston alone at the top of the Arizona State archives for the most single-season homers in program history.

Final straw
Taylor Penn spelled Klecker in the fifth inning and absolutely dominated the Bearcat lineup with 3.0 scoreless innings of work with just one hit allowed. Penn struck out five and allowed no walks. Alex Overbay, Sean Fitzpatrick and Eli Buxton handled the rest and the garrison of pitchers struck out 15 UC batters. It was the 11th time ASU has struck out 15 or more batters in a game, though the team bizarrely has just a 5-6 record in those games. Matt Polk added an insurance homer in the seventh and Dean Toigo tacked on a two-RBI double in the eighth as the offense pulled away down the stretch.

The big number
6 -
The Sun Devils got top-to-bottom production out of its lineup today, keyed by six hits out of its 7-9 hitters. Matt Polk’s three-hit day flew under the radar but the veteran was the catalyst for ASU’s offense throughout the night. Polk singled in the second and took second on a passed ball before scoring later in the inning on an error to give ASU a 3-1 lead. In the third, his RBI single plated another run and he added a stolen base. He capped the day off with his fourth homer of the season in the seventh after the ASU offense had stagnated for a couple innings to give the team an 8-1 lead. Brody Briggs recorded two hits but had two lasers on a rope robbed from him as well while PJ Moutzouridis’ leadoff triple in the fourth set the table for Hairston’s heroic blast.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 102 of its 181 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 56 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston extended his reached base streak to 38 consecutive games with his record-breaking 28th home run of the season in the fourth inning.
  • Hairston made history with that homer as he is now in sole possession of ASU’s single season home run record, which was previously 27 by Mitch Jones in 2000.
  • Hairston recorded the homer as the second batter that UC reliever Adam Brouwer faced. In doing so, his 12 home runs as one of the first three batters an opponent reliever has faced upon entering a game are tops in the country. He would add another base hit off new pitcher Brenden Garula in the eighth inning.
    • Entering the weekend, he had 25 hits and 32 RBIs in that scenario, ranking first in both categories and only added to that tonight. He was batting .510 off new pitchers that face him within their first three batters faced - ninth-best in the country. His absurd 1.966 OPS off those new pitchers was first in the country. In fact, it was the highest of any player in the country since AT LEAST 2019.
  • Since starting the game on the bench in ASU’s series finale at BYU (April 18). Dominic Smaldino has hits in 13 of the 14 games since with seven homers. He notched his 30th career homer tonight.
    • Entering the weekend, his 15 extra base hits in that span were ninth in the country and his nine homers were ninth as well. He had 24 RBIs in that stretch, which were 24th in the nation.
  • Cincinnati starting pitcher Nathan Taylor had struck out six or more batters in 12 consecutive starts this season entering tonight before managing just one on Thursday.
  • ASU moved to 25-7 when homering at least twice in a game this season.
  • The Big 12 leader in stolen bases and Top-35 nationally in the category, the Bearcats managed just two on Thursday.

Inning by inning
First inning
Kole Klecker got things started on the mound for the Sun Devils, striking out the first batter he faced. A one-out double gave the Bearcats an early baserunner, followed by a stolen base. A walk put runners on the corners, and an RBI-groundout gave Cincinnati an early 1-0 lead. A wild pitch and back-to-back walks loaded the bases, but Klecker was able to limit the damage to just one run on a pop up.

Landon Hairston reached on an error to lead off the game, but was quickly thrown out on a double play. With two outs, Dean Toigo singled through the left side, and Dominic Smaldino got Arizona State on the board with a two-run blast to left center. Austen Roellig struck out to end the inning with ASU up 2-1.

Second inning
Despite giving up a one-out walk. Klecker was able to keep the Bearcats from scoring, getting two strikeouts and a flyout.

With one out, Matt Polk singled over the shortstop’s head, and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. A groundout moved him over to third, and a walk from PJ Moutzouridis brought Hairston up with two outs and runners on the corners. Hairston reached on an error for the second time in as many innings, allowing Polk to score to make it 3-1, and Moutzouridis to move to third. Hairston advanced to second on wild pitch, but both were left stranded as Contrades grounded out.

Third inning
After a leadoff single, Klecker was able to get a double play. However, two consecutive walks put traffic on the basepaths, and a bunt single loaded the bases. Klecker was able to escape the jam with an inning-ending strikeout.

Toigo led off the inning, reaching on an error, and Smaldino reached on another error to follow. A sac bunt from Austen Roellig moved both runners into scoring position, and an RBI-groundout from Garrett Michel brought in a run. Polk singled past the diving shortstop for an RBI, making it 5-1, Sun Devils. A groundout ended the frame.

Fourth inning
Klecker delivered a 1-2-3 inning, complete with a flyout, strikeout, and groundout.

Moutzouridis led off with a triple off the left center wall (that would have likely been a home run at Muni). Hairston then delivered the big swing, a two-run shot into the visitor bullpen in right field, extending the Sun Devils lead to 7-1. A hit by pitch for Contrades followed, but two popouts and a strikeout closed out the fourth.

Fifth inning
Taylor Penn was the first guy out of the Sun Devil bullpen, and he delivered back-to-back strikeouts before a hit by pitch gave Cincinnati a two-out baserunner. A pop out to third finished off the scoreless frame.

With two outs, Brody Briggs singled into center and Moutzouridis walked. Hairston grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

Sixth inning
Penn returned to the mound and gave the Sun Devils a three-up, three-down frame.

Arizona State couldn’t get anything going in sixth, going down in order.

Seventh inning
Penn worked around a one-out single to deliver a scoreless frame, capped off with back-to-back strikeouts.

Polk cranked a solo home run to left with two outs to extend ASU’s lead to 8-1. Briggs then singled into center field, but was left stranded as a flyout ended the inning.

Eighth inning
Alex Overbay was the next pitcher for Arizona State, sending down the first two hitters on a strikeout and a groundout. A single and an RBI-double cut the lead to 8-2, but Overbay was able to close out the frame with another strikeout.

Hairston led off with a single and Contrades followed up with one of his own- both were smoked at over 100 mph right at defenders that were unable to corral. Toigo ripped a double in the left center gap that scored both runners to make it 10-2. A groundout moved Toigo to third, where he was left as a strikeout and groundout ended the frame.

Ninth inning
Sean Fitzpatrick was called on for the ninth, striking out the first batter before allowing a baserunner on an error. Eli Buxton was then brought in, striking out both batters he faced to seal the 10-2 Sun Devil victory.

Quotables

Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening Statement
"Good team win by our guys. (Kole) Klecker gave us four innings, he wasn't as sharp as normally is, but I think with the additional rest, sometimes you can maybe lose feel a little bit there at the beginning, but he got us out of some big jams there early on, and was able to get us through four. (Taylor) Penn picked him up and threw the ball outstanding for three innings. The rest of the bullpen, (Sean) Fitzpatrick, (Eli) Buxton, and (Alex) Overbayi did a great job there in the back half. Offensively, took advantage of some miscues and obviously a couple of big hits, big blows as well. Smaldino, and then, of course, this guy Landon Harrison, with a couple of home runs there, Matt Polk added on a home run late, so all around good effort by our guys. Super proud of them. Just a fun team to be a part of right now.”

On the team’s all-around offensive performance
"I think that's what we're capable of. Obviously, there were some defensive miscues that we took advantage of, but I was really impressed. We did a really good job on the bases, taking extra bases tonight, and taking advantage of those types of things. Again, we swing the bats decently as well. We have to just continue to keep our head down and play the best baseball we can this time of year. And guys are going to step up and have big time performances, and these two guys to my right (Hairston and Penn) are examples of that tonight, so the great thing about our team is that it's not always the same guys every night. It's somebody different, and everyone's contributing. So when you have an offense one through nine that everyone's contributing makes this awful dangerous.”

On witnessing Hairston’s record breaking season
"I don't know if I can really put it into words, just from a standpoint of, we all know the history of Arizona State and the amount of players that have come through here with the 118 major leaguers, and a lot of them are very storied and household name type guys, and a lot of them had phenomenal careers as players at ASU, and gone on and had huge careers in the major leagues. So for this young man to be on top of that mountain, that's pretty damn special. It's amazing, and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to recruit him, get him here, coach him, and then have him essentially be the cornerstone of a very good offense for us, and do what he's doing. I’m just super proud of the way he's handled the attention, for lack of a better term. He's done a great job with just staying even keel. Everyone was anticipating him breaking this record, and there were a few weeks there where he didn't get home runs. But I've said it all along, he may get mad at me for this, but he's not a home run hitter, he's just a flat out pure hitter that happens to hit home runs, and to me that's a compliment. He's just an all-around pure hitter. So, even though that stretch, where he wasn't getting all of his homers, he was still getting his hits, he was still getting on base, he was still being a catalyst for our offense. To me, that's just a sign of a great hitter and a great player. So, for now, him to stand alone on top of that mountain is pretty damn special.”

On Taylor Penn’s performance out of the bullpen
"It's extremely valuable to have a guy like T-Penn, he epitomizes an out-getter. You can plug him in. If a guy can't get out of the first inning out of our start, you can plug him in. You can start him, obviously. You can put him in the back end when you need outs and need strikes. Just the guy that you can count on to be ready at all times. And for me, the biggest thing is, the dude just comes in and pounds the strike zone and throws a lot of strikes. There's times in the game where it's like, we got to get this game going and the momentum going and get the opposing team's bats going and swinging, so he just sets us up, and it gets us off the field quickly, to get our offense back to work, and having a guy like him is extremely valuable in the fact that he checks his ego at the door every day,. He could be squawking at me, “I want to be a starter.” I never heard that out of his mouth once this year. He's like, "Dude, just give me the rock whenever you need me to.” He always wants the ball. And he'll probably be hounding me tomorrow for the ball at some point. I can't say enough about how valuable it is to have someone like that on your staff.”

Outfielder Landon Hairston
On hitting his record setting 28th home run of the season
"It feels amazing. To be a part of something in such a storied program, it means the world to me. There are no words to describe it. It was a big weight off my shoulders, that's for sure, but I’m just super excited. I knew right when it left the bat that it was gone, and it's no better feeling in the world when you square up a ball like that, and you know it's gone. So super excited.”

On playing in front of his friends and family
"It's awesome. I don't know if you guys saw it, but a big part of my family was there today, so that's a huge advantage playing for your hometown team, having your family at every game. I know this isn’t Muni, but it's pretty close. So having my family, my friends, people I grew up with at these types of games is special.”

Pitcher Taylor Penn
On his versatility in pitching in different situations
"Just having a good routine, really, and just knowing whenever Willie (Bloomquist) puts me in the game just to contribute, fill it up, let your defense work. I feel like when the defense is in the game, it kind of affects the offense as well, so you're not watching somebody walk the whole time. Just whenever I get a chance to pitch, it's a blessing being able to pitch anytime, starting or relieving.”
