Matt Polk celebrates on of ASU's four doubles in Friday's victory over UCF.

ORLANDO – No. 19 Sun Devil Baseball picked up a pivotal road win on Friday behind a 9-4 victory over UCF in the series opener for its sixth conference victory in a row.

With the win, Arizona State (32-14, 15-7 Big 12) now sits alone in second in the Big 12 conference standings - three games back from Big 12 leader Kansas. ASU has now won six-straight conference games for the first time since the 2016 season.

Nu’u Contrades recorded four hits and three RBIs to pace the Sun Devil offense, which recorded 15 hits - the most allowed by UCF (26-16, 14-8 Big 12) in a game this season. Dominic Smaldino added three hits while PJ Moutzouridis, Matt Polk and Garrett Michell all added two - the latter of which recording ASU’s only homer in the game.

Cole Carlon picked up his third consecutive winning decision behind 5.0 innings of work. While not his sharpest outing, he limited UCF to three runs on five hits with seven strikeouts. Taylor Penn gave ASU a solid 2.2 innings of work in relief with just one run allowed and Sean Fitzpatrick and Derek Schaefer closed things out with the final four outs.

ASU responded with runs to take the lead or extend its lead after each of the three innings UCF recorded runs of its own, always having an answer anytime the Knights looked ready to threaten while stranding 10 UCF baserunners in the process.

The Sun Devils will have a quick turnaround into Game Two on Saturday, which will get underway at 10 p.m. AZT/1 p.m. locally in order to avoid a weather cell set to roll into the Orlando area tomorrow evening.

Turning point
UCF tagged Carlon for a pair of solo shots in the bottom of the first inning after the first two outs flew to the warning track and it looked like it might be a long day for the Arizona State ace. His offense picked him right up in the top of the second, however, as Michel lifted the second pitch of the frame to the batter’s eye in center to immediately halve the deficit. ASU added doubles from Polk, Moutzouridis and Contrades after that to tack on two runs and take a 3-2 lead it would not relinquish. Carlon, in turn, settled in to put two zeroes on the board over the next two frames to allow ASU to extend its lead before striking out the final batter in both the fourth and fifth innings with two runners on board to keep the Knights from digging into said lead.

Big moment
The Sun Devils didn’t need to do much to extend its lead to a comfortable level in the third behind some heady at-bats with two outs. Briggs drew a two-out walk to load the bases and Moutzouridis worked a full count RBI walk to tack another run on. Hairston was hit by a pitch despite being down 0-2 early in the count for another RBI walk and Contrades added his third hit in as many innings with an RBI single to give ASU a 6-2 cushion to work with.

Final straw
After UCF scored in the bottom of the seven to cut the lead to a three-run deficit at 7-4, the Sun Devils bounced right back with some brilliant situational baseball in the top of the eighth to add some insurance. Smaldino led off with a double and ASU had runners on first and third on Polk’s infield chopper with one out. Briggs laid down a picture perfect safety squeeze to bring one run across before Moutzouridis followed by beating the shift with an opposite field RBI single to give ASU its largest lead of the game at 9-4. ASU was not clear yet, however, as UCF loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth to bring the dangerous Andrew Williamson to the plate. ASU turned to Fitzpatrick out of the pen and the lefty quickly stifled the threat with a groundout to cap Williamson’s 0-for-5 day.

The big number
6 - Arizona State won its sixth consecutive Big 12 game, marking the first time the program had accomplished the feat since a six-game stretch back in 2016 (Cal x1, Stanford x3, Oregon x2). The Sun Devils last won seven conference games in a row in 2011 (Washington State x3, Cal x3, Stanford x1). The Sun Devils are 8-1 over their past nine Big 12 games. Especially notable about the current six-game stretch is the Sun Devils have accomplished it without requiring a superheroic effort from Golden Spikes candidate Landon Hairston - who has the NINTH-best average among all Sun Devil players in that span (despite batting a perfectly respectable .286). Nu’u Contrades has paced the way over the six-game conference win streak with his .462 average with six extra-base hits and 11 RBIs.

Notables

  • Arizona State was a very pedestrian 18-18 in night games last season and have shown vast improvement in that area this year with a 17-8 record in the late games. The team was especially bad in Friday night/weekend series openers a season ago, going just 6-8 in those. With tonight’s victory, ASU is now 8-3 in weekend series openers this season.
  • Conversely, UCF was 7-1 on in weekend series openers when the first game game was played on a Thursday or Friday entering tonight.
  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 90 of its 160 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 53 innings with at least three runs scored, 30 with at least four and 23 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston had his hitting streak ended at 28-consecutive games after his 0-for-3 outing today, capping off fifth-longest in Sun Devil school history and ending the longest active streak in the nation. He did extend his reached base streak to 29 consecutive games, however.
  • Sean Fitzpatrick inherited the bases loaded with two outs in the ninth but was able to retire the lone batter he faced and has now stranded 16 of his team-high 27 inherited runners this season.
  • Out of all D1 pitchers with at least 15 appearances this season (1,041 total), Fitzpatrick entered tonight having given up just one base hit to the first batter he has seen in an appearance, which was tied for the 19th-lowest total in the country. With tonight’s effort, the first batter Fitzpatrick has faced in a game has reached via base hit just once in 25 outings.
  • The Sun Devil pitchers struck out 11 batters and it was the 31st time this season with double-digit strikeouts.
  • UCF starter Mateo Gray had posted a 5-0 record on the season before taking his first loss tonight. Gray had gone at least five innings in each of his last five starts entering tonight before being chased in the third. His six runs allowed were notable as he had allowed just 23 total earned runs over his 13 other appearances this season.
  • The Sun Devils got UCF standout Andrew Williamson to strand a career-high six batters on base on Friday - a feat matched just once before in March of his freshman season in 2024. Williamson was a career .331 hitter with runners in scoring position and batting .395 in the category this season. He was batting .667 with the bases loaded this season, making his eighth inning groundout to Fitzpatrick all the more noteworthy.
  • ASU kept the pressure on all day, advancing baserunners 18 times on 36 chances (.500) while UCF managed to do so only four times on 16 chances (.267).
  • Williamson struck out three times on Friday after he had struck out just three times TOTAL over his previous seven games.
  • Nu’u Contrades extended his hit streak to 12 games thanks to a four-hit effort. He has at least one extra-base hit in 11 of the 12 games in that stretch after his two-double outing today.
  • The game was the 32nd time this season ASU recorded at least ten hits and 13th time they had 15 or more knocks. It was the most allowed by UCF to an opponent this season.
  • Matt Polk extended his hitting streak to seven games with multiple hits in four of those after today and is now hitting .367 on the season. .
  • Dominic Smaldino notched his second consecutive three-hit game and now has 11 hits over his last five outings after not starting in the finale at BYU two weeks ago.

    Up next
The Sun Devils will look for their 10th series victory of the season tomorrow with first pitch now scheduled for 10 a.m. AZT/1 p.m. locally to avoid scheduled weather in the Orlando area on Saturday evening. The game will be broadcast live via ESPN+ and available over Valley airwaves on KAZG 1440 AM.

Inning by inning
First inning
Contrades reached on an infield single and Toigo battled back from a quick 0-2 count to draw an HBP to put two on with one-out. Roellig put a charge in one but the UCF center fielder made a great running extended play at the warning track to save runs and rob extra bases and a strikeout ended the ASU threat. After two warning track balls, UCF didn’t miss on the next two with back-to-back solo shots giving UCF an early 2-0 lead. The inning stayed alive on a two-out error before Carlon picked up his first strikeout to limit the damage.

Second inning
Michel wasted zero time providing a response, lifting the second pitch of the frame to the batter’s eye in center. Polk followed with a double and took third on a Briggs flyout. Moutzouridis ripped another double past the third baseman to score Polk and Contrades followed with a double of his own with two outs to put the Sun Devils on top, 3-2. Carlon worked around a tough-hop one-out single, capping the frame off with a strikeout.

Third inning
Smaldino reached on a one-out single and took second on a wild pitch and Michel walked to put two on. Polk gave one a ride just shy of the warning track in left center but it was caught harmlessly. Briggs worked a two out walk to load the bases and Mouzourdis drew a full count walk to push a run across. Hairston was struck by a pitch to bring another home, chasing the UCF starter. Contrades welcomed a new starter with an RBI single as ASU opened up a 6-2 lead. Carlon worked his first 1-2-3 frame of the game to keep it a four-run advantage.

Fourth inning
UCF made three impressive defensive plays to spoil ASU’s attempt to add more runs, limiting the damage to just a Michel two-out single through the opposite right side. UCF led off the fourth with a double down the right field line and brought the run home on a one-out single. Carlon wasn’t out of it with a pair on and two outs and the dangerous Andrew Williamson at the plate but got the star player to strike out to keep ASU on top, 6-3.

Fifth inning
Briggs reached on a one-out single and took second on a Moutzouridis ground out. UCF brought another pitcher in, who promptly walked Hairston to put two on with one out. Contrades continued his heater with his fourth hit of the game, bringing in his third RBI and getting the run back for the Sun Devils to make it 7-3. ASU was unable to capitalize on the runners on second and third with one out, however as it remained a four-run game. Carlon again ran into some trouble with two outs, walking one and hitting another and falling behind 3-1 to the UCF pinch hitter before battling back for a huge inning ending strikeout to keep it a 7-3 game.

Sixth inning
Smaldino led off the sixth with his second hit of the game. Back-to-back strikeouts preceded a Briggs two-out walk and the two runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch but Moutzouridis got caught looking on an offspeed pitch to end the threat. Taylor Penn entered in relief for Carlon and worked an efficient 1-2-3 inning that was keyed by a sweet diving snag from Hairston in the left center gap to rob extra bases as it remained 7-3.

Seventh inning
Toigo drew a two-out walk and stole second but a timing violation was called on Roellig at the plate, resulting in an inning-ending strikeout. Penn got a leadoff strikeout against Williamson - just the second time this season he had struck out three times - but a one-out line drive wall scraper to center brought UCF back within three runs. Penn bounced back nicely with a pair of groundouts, including one he fielded himself to keep it a three-run game.

Eighth inning
Smaldino’s third hit of the game was a rocket off the top of the opposite right center wall for a double. Polk reached on an infield chopper off the pitcher’s glove to put runners on the corners and Briggs followed with a nice squeeze bunt to plate the run and extend the lead back to four runs at 8-4. Moutzouridis followed on the very next pitch by lacing one the opposite way through the shift, plating Polk and giving ASU its largest lead of the game at 9-4. After giving up a one-out single, Penn won an 11-pitch battle with a strikeout for the second out but then walked the next two batters to load the bases and turn things over to the top of the order. Fitzpatrick entered

Ninth inning
Toigo reached on a leadoff single and ASU eventually put a pair on with a Michel two-out walk after a couple of fielder’s choices but ASU couldn’t add to its lead. ASU wasn’t taking any chances with its five-run lead and went to closer Derek Schaefer, who worked an efficient ninth to cap things off despite allowing what proved to be a harmless two-out single.
