TEMPE – Coming from behind in the final rotation, Sun Devil Gymnastics pulled out a win in the opening round of NCAA Regionals in Desert Financial Arena over rival Arizona with a 195.425, propelling Arizona State into the second round on Thursday evening.
The Gym Devils led after the first rotation but fell behind after the second and third rotations. Down heading into floor, ASU benefitted from strong floor routines and Wildcat miscues on beam, where two gymnasts fell during their routines, to come back and secure the victory.
Arizona State will compete in the second session of the second round tomorrow at 7 p.m. MST. ASU will compete alongside No. 3 seed Florida, No. 14 seed California and Penn State. The Sun Devils will start on beam.

Quotes
Head Coach Jay Santos
Opening statement:
“We just advanced in the NCAA tournament so I'm thrilled. I'm so happy for the team. I'm so happy for them. They fought really hard to keep things moving and to keep it going. We just got to knock out our in-state rival out of the tournament so it feels good, feels great.”
On the mentality of today’s performance:
“We go into every meet, obviously, with the goal of coming out on top. You come out of every meet assessing what went well, what doesn't go well, where do we still need to work. There's been a lot of growth with this group. Mentally, earlier in the season, I don't know if they would have bounced back from that bar rotation and they at least had enough answers today. That was one of the big things we talked about. There was going to be stuff that happened today, and we have to have an answer for it. Just continuing to fight, continuing to remember, it's one thing at a time, even if we're down, you never know what might happen. We've just worked really, really hard. I'm proud of where we're at and we've got a lot more to give still. We need a much cleaner meet, and not too many big mistakes.”
On the quick turnaround to round two tomorrow night:
“Everything they can do to recover and sleep and just get their bodies feeling as strong as they possibly can to do this turnaround is what we will do. It's a challenge, I'm not going to lie, it's a pounding and punishing sport. It's just all about recovery, getting home, getting off their feet, resting. We'll be back after the treatment tonight, tomorrow, everything. We are going to do everything they possibly can to rest and get rid of the soreness.”
On the loss of senior all around Kimberly Smith to injury:
“With Kimberly out, people got to step in and compete. She's still our captain, she's still there, she's still been in practices, she's still supporting her teammates. It's just about who's next up in the lineup and who's going to try to step up, shine in that moment and see what we can do there. We didn't have anybody, like another all arounder just waiting. It was multiple kids over multiple events and we just got to keep fighting through it.”
Junior Halle Gregoire
On the emotions during the final rotation
“I don't really pay attention to the scores, but at one point, Jay said that we still have to do our job. And I think that’s what is most important, regardless if we're paying attention to the scores or not. We need to just do our job at the end of the day, and that's what's going to get us to the next spot, which it did today. So we just had to do our job.”
On competing at Desert Financial Arena
“We're comfortable here. We know the equipment, this is our home, especially when we're going against UofA, we need to remind them that this is our home. We did exactly that. So that was really exciting.”
On being a veteran leader on the team
“I feel like I have to give props to Kimberly (Smith) honestly, because she has trained me to be the person that I am today, and she has guided me in this leadership role that I do feel like I've stepped into this year, which has been really exciting. I feel like I'm able to let the underclassmen know what it's going to be like and what to expect, but not in a way that's overwhelming, but in a way that's exciting. And we get to do this and we get this opportunity.”
Junior Reese Grolla
On growing as a gymnast and a person this season
“I feel like I mentally have grown a bunch. Sometimes I find myself always in my head and like I have to do this, but I've really learned that I get to do this, and that this is such an enjoyable experience, and that no one really gets to experience this. I’m just taking it all in.”
On the emotions of the last half of the meet
“I feel like we thrive when we're having fun. And so I feel like we were just saying, ‘You know what, let's just do our thing, have fun, be there for each other.’ That's when we do our best gymnastics. That was kind of our mentality for that floor rotation.”
