Brody Briggs gives his bullpen a point as he rounds the bases following his two-run homer at BYU.

PROVO - No. 23 Sun Devil Baseball bounced back in resounding fashion of yesterday’s run-rule defeat, returning the favor in kind with a 13-0 victory over BYU in seven innings to even the series and force a rubber match on Saturday.

A week removed from perhaps his worst outing as a Sun Devil, Cole Carlon had perhaps his best outing in the Maroon and Gold as he flashed triple digits on the radar gun several times over the course of his 6.0 innings of action. Carlon struck out 11, walked none and allowed just three total hits to propel ASU (27-13, 10-7 Big 12) to what might have been its best all-around effort of the season.

Brody Briggs ended a 0-for-18 slump with a two-hit day, including a two-run homer to get the scoring started in the second inning and also throwing out a BYU (20-17. 9-8) baserunner. Landon Hairston added two hits and two RBIs and Austen Roellig and Matt Polk also had multi-RBI games. Becket Zavorek had two base knocks and scored three runs. The bottom of ASU’s order recorded nine runs between the 6-9 batters, getting on base and letting the bats at the top of the order do their thing.

The Sun Devils will be looking for their third consecutive series win in a rubber match and hope to improve to 8-1 in weekend series this season in the process.

Turning point
Brody Briggs was the catalyst for a strong early start to the contest after BYU led the game with a single - one of only three hits in the contest - but quickly had it wiped off the board due to Briggs’ hose while attempting to steal second as Carlon was able to face the minimum in the first. After Dominic Smaldino’s two-out walk in the top of the second, Briggs wasted no time  busting out of a slump that saw him record no hits over his previous 18 at-bats, scorching the first pitch he saw in the game into the pines in right field for a two-run shot. The Sun Devils weren’t done there and added three more two out runs in the frame, highlighted by Austen Roellig’s two-RBI double to make it a commanding 5-0 lead.

Big moment
As the last week of action has shown, a five-run lead shouldn’t have anyone resting on their laurels and the Sun Devils needed a stop in the bottom of that second inning to be able to breathe easy. They got exactly that in more and more as Carlon put on a clinic as he struck out the Cougar’s 4-6 batters with an electric fastball that touched triple digits on the radar gun numerous times. Carlon allowed just two more hits over the course of his six-inning outing - one of which coming on a bunt single - recording 11 total strikeouts along the way as BYU would never find itself in a position to threaten ASU at any point.

Final straw
After watching BYU continue to pad its lead yesterday en route to a deflating 19-9 run-rule victory over the Sun Devils, ASU returned the favor in kind on Friday. The Sun Devils added one in the fifth and two in the sixth and needed just two more in the seventh to put the run-rule on the table. They ended up with five in a frame where BYU pitches lost total command of any of their pitches, recording four walks, a hit by pitch and two wild pitches and a 13-0 advantage. Taylor Penn spelled Carlon to close things out and needed just nine pitches to force the run-rule into place and a rubber match on Sunday.

The big number
101 - The bottom of the second inning might have been the most electric of Cole Carlon’s career as the lefty gave the radar gun a workout with a flurry of triple-digit pitches while striking out the side. It was the first time in his career reaching the milestone. His strikeout of Tualau Wolfgramm for the second out flashed 101 on the scoreboard and marked Carlon as one of just three pitchers in the country to touch 101 this season. Carlon went on to strike out 11 in the game and allowed just three hits with zero walks over his 6.0 innings of work.

Inning by inning
First inning
The Sun Devils went down in order to lead off the game. BYU notched a leadoff single but Carlon got a strikeout ahead of Briggs hosing the runner stealing second. A flyout to the warning track led to both teams facing the minimum in the first.

Second inning
After two quick outs, Smaldino worked a full count walk and Briggs broke out of his 0-for-18 slump in a loud way with a rope into the pines in right field on the first pitch he saw for a 2-0 ASU lead. Zavorek singled and Moutzouridis and Hairston walked to load the bases with two outs. Zavorek scored on a wild pitch and Roellig doubled to score two more and ASU took a 5-0 advantage.

Cole Carlon kept the electricity flowing with arguably his most impressive inning of the season, touching triple digits for the first time in his career including a strikeout at 101 MPH for the second out of the frame and striking out the side in the process.

Third inning
The Sun Devils went down in order. Carlon stranded a one-out bunt single at third with a pair of groundouts on some nice defensive plays by Mouzouridis and Roellig.

Fourth inning
Briggs led off the fourth with a single but an unlucky hit-and-run attempt led to an easy double play. Moutzouridis worked a two-out walk and Hairston got an infield single to put two on but ASU couldn’t add to its lead.  Landon Hairston recorded the hat trick of outs in center field on three consecutive flyouts, including one where he cooly tracked down a ball at the warning track.

Fifth inning
Contrades led off with a leadoff double and moved to third on a Toigo groundout and scored on a Polk sac fly to extend ASU’s lead to 6-0. Carlon came back and retired the side on three strikeouts for the second time in the game and brought his tally to eight for the game.

Sixth inning
Briggs walked to lead off the sixth and Zavorek followed with a single. Hairston’s RBI single extended the lead to 7-0 and then the crafty player delayed the Cougars in a double steal rundown long enough to score Zavorek and make it an 8-0 game. Carlon struck out the side for the second consecutive frame, stranding a one-out double at second.

Seventh inning
Toigo and Polk recorded a pair of one-out doubles to make it a 9-0 game. Smadino was hit by a pitch to put two on and a two-out Zavorek walk loaded the bases. Moutzouridis and Hairston drew RBI walks and Zavorek and Moutzouridis scored on a pair of wild pitches to make it 13-0. Taylor Penn entered the game to close things out and got three quick pop outs on just nine pitches to seal the run-rule victory.
