PHOENIX – No. 20 Sun Devil Baseball managed just four hits and fell in another large hole by the midpoint in the game as it dropped the series opener to Utah, 10-4, on Friday at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Landon Hairston was the lone bright spot for the Sun Devils, going 2-for-4 with his 20th home run of the season and three RBIs. Arizona State (24-11, 7-6 Big 12) did not manage a hit over the final 4.2 innings after Hairston’s three-run homer in the fifth that brought ASU within three runs.

Utah (17-13, 6-7 Big 12) jumped out to a 7-1 lead on a three-run homer of their own in the top of the fifth inning - ASU’s third consecutive game of the week falling into a hole of five or more runs by the midway point of the game.

Turning point
Cole Carlon labored through the first 4.2 innings of the game and it eventually came back to bite him in the fifth. With Utah leading 3-1, a two-out RBI single plated one run but the hammer came on the next batter as catcher Jack Klevenko recorded his first home run of the season on a three-run shot that made it a 7-1 game and ASU’s third straight came falling in a hole of five or more runs.

Big moment
After gaining all the momentum back with Landon Hairston’s three-run shot in the fifth to get back within three runs, the Sun Devils didn’t manage a hit over the final four innings despite drawing five free passes and at no point threatened to dig further into its early hole.

Final straw
Trailing 7-4 in the eighth inning with one out and runners on the corner, the Sun Devils had a chance to get a foul popout that would have given the team two outs and a chance to get out of the inning unscathed. Instead, the ball dropped harmlessly behind home. While ASU was able to get a rundown in a pickle at home on the next pitch, the play allowed two Utah batters to move into scoring position and took any force off the table. It wouldn’t matter as ASU issued two walks and an HBP plated two runners and made it a five-run game and easily held on through the finish line.

The big number
4 -
The Sun Devils had their fewest hits of the season against one of the statistically worst pitching teams in the Big 12, and on the lower end of the entire nation. Utah had allowed double digit hits in 12 consecutive games entering the night and had allowed double-digit runs in three-straight games and five of the last six. Arizona State drew 10 free passes (7 walks, 3 HBPs) but managed to bat just 2-for-13 (.154) with runners on base.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 67 of its 115 half-innings with runs this season. ASU has 40 innings with at least three runs scored, 24 with at least four and 19 with at least five.
  • Landon Hairston has 54 extra base hits over his last 62 games after recording his 16th double of the season on the first pitch of the game followed by his 20th home run of the season in the fifth. In his first 27 games as a Sun Devil, he had just one.
  • The game was Hairston’s 11th-straight with an extra-base hit.
  • Hairston extended his hitting streak to 18-consecutive games.
  • Hairston remains second in the country with his 20 homers after Cincinnati’s Quentin Coats recorded his 21st of the year.
  • Hairston is the 17th time in program history a Sun Devil has reached 20 homers. He is well on pace to surpass Mitch Jones’ single-season school record of 27 from 2000.
  • Hairston now has 57 RBIs - all coming as the leadoff batter in the Sun Devil lineup in 35 games. For perspective, that total would have placed him fifth in the nation for the SEASON among leadoff batters a year ago with the national leader - Murray State’s Jonathan Hogart - recording 65 total over 61 games.
  • ASU stuck out double digit batters for the 22nd time this season.

    Up next
The Sun Devils continue the series with Utah on Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. AZT, and the game will be streamed live via ESPN+ and also available over the local airwaves on KDUS 1060 AM.

“I'm confident in our core group that they get it right and at the end of the day, we're going to keep grinding and keep going again and again. I am confident in the guys in the clubhouse that they'll turn this thing around.”

Willie Bloomquist on his confidence in the team to overcome struggles

Inning by inning
First inning
Cole Carlon got things started for the Sun Devils, tossing a scoreless first while working around a one-out single.

The Devils got on the board first, as Landon Hairston led off with a double, moved to third on a flyout from Austen Roellig, and scored on a sac fly from Dean Toigo, giving Arizona State a 1-0 lead.

Second inning
After loading the bases on a walk, single, and hit by pitch, Carlon struck out the next batter for the first out. A walk brought in a run for Utah, making it a 1-1 game. Carlon got a flyout for the next out, but a two-run single gave the Utes a 3-1 lead. A strikeout ended the inning.

Arizona State did not get any baserunners and remained down 3-1 heading into the third inning.

Third inning
After a double and a single started the inning, Carlon got a strikeout, followed by a fielder’s choice that got an out at home. Carlon struck out another batter to end the scoreless frame and keep it a two-run ballgame.

The Sun Devils could not get anything going, as three straight batters grounded out.

Fourth inning
Carlon worked around a hit by pitch to strike out the side.

The Sun Devils got a one-out walk from Nu’u Contrades, but left him stranded as a strikeout and flyout ended the inning.

Fifth inning
The Utes tacked on four runs in the inning with two outs, scoring on an RBI-single and a three-run home run, chasing Carlon from the game. Colin Linder came in from the bullpen, getting the first batter he faced to line out, ending the inning with Utah up 7-1.

Dominic Smaldino led off the inning with a walk, then Brody Briggs popped out to short. After a long intermission that included ejections of Briggs and Bloomquist, as well as Utah’s pitcher Colter McAnelly, PJ Moutzouridis singled to left center and Hairston homered to deep left center, cutting Utah’s lead to 7-4. A foul out and groundout ended the frame.

Sixth inning
Linder pitched a scoreless frame, striking out the side.

Arizona State got a two-out baserunner on a hit by pitch from Matt Polk, but he was left at first as a flyout ended the frame.

Seventh inning
Linder tossed another scoreless inning, working around a one-out single to keep it a 7-4 game.

Coen Niclai led off with a four-pitch walk, and after a line out from Moutzouridis, Hairston followed with a walk of his own. However, a line out from Roellig led to an inning-ending double play.

Eighth inning
After a walk and a fielder’s choice out started the inning, Linder gave up a single before getting another fielder’s choice out. The Sun Devils then went to Sean Fitzpatrick out of the bullpen, who gave up a walk and a bases loaded hit by pitch, allowing Utah to extend its lead to 8-4. A bases loaded walk drove in another run for the Utes, prompting Arizona State to bring in Eli Buxton. Buxton got a groundout to end the inning, down 9-4.

The Sun Devils went down in order in the eighth.

Ninth inning
After a leadoff walk and a fielder’s choice, Buxton was relieved for Brady Louck, who got a strikeout before giving up an RBI-double to make it 10-4. A flyout to right ended the inning.

Polk reached on a hit by pitch and moved over to second on an error, and Niclai took a one-out walk, but a strikeout for Niclai left the Sun Devils down to their final out. Hairston flew out to right to end the game.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“Interesting night to say the least. We were not sharp on the mound and at the plate.  We just didn't have our A game tonight. Obviously some fireworks were there in the fifth inning. The bottom line is, we're focused on playing a better brand of baseball right now. The last handful of games have just not been what I expected. The wins and losses will follow based upon how you perform and how you attack the X's and O's of the game. Right now, we can talk about wins and losses and whatnot. That doesn't really matter at the end of the day if you're not going to address the issues that we have. Offensively, our approach again came out decent in the first inning and then we went flat and stagnant until the fifth (inning) and it wasn't a very good approach. There are things that we have to clean up and be better at.”

On what gives him confidence to bounce back
“I'm confident in our core group that they get it right and at the end of the day, we're going to keep grinding and keep going again and again. I am confident in the guys in the clubhouse that they'll turn this thing around.”

On what needs to be done to turn things around
“You have to block out the external noise that I'm sure is gonna start creeping in out there and just stick with us, believe in ourselves with what we're doing. We have to understand that we can't get complacent and we can't go about our business the way of just expecting to roll out there with an AS on our uniform and win, you have to go out and prove it. You have to go out there with intensity and a mindset that you're not going to be denied. Right now, we got a little bit of a gut check right now to see if we're made of that.”

On ASU’s process moving forward
“We can't just say ‘oh, we should win this game and go out and win’, it doesn't work that way. You have to focus on the process of what gets you there. Right now, that's where guys need to refocus that intensity and discipline toward the process of what they're doing. The results will then take care of themselves.”
