TEMPE - Arizona State Men’s Basketball hosts No. 19 Gonzaga at Desert Financial Arena on Friday at 9 PM MST.

Head Coach Bobby Hurley’s team has their first Top-25 matchup of the season, welcoming the highly-touted Bulldogs to Tempe on Homecoming weekend. The Sun Devils will look to capture their 14th win over a ranked opponent in the Hurley era. Limited tickets are still available at sundeviltickets.com.

The matchup
Arizona State looks to avenge their loss from last season when they matched up with Gonzaga for the first time in program history. The Sun Devils went toe-to-toe with a Top-10 Bulldogs team last season on the road in one of college basketball's toughest environments. ASU battled to a 88-80 loss. ASU had quality games from Alston Mason (19 points on 8-of-13 shooting) and Basheer Jihad (22 points including perfect in seven free throws and 10 boards). ASU led 69-67 with under eight to go and had an 11-0 run in the outing.

How to follow
Arizona State will make their season debut on national television as they are featured on ESPN2 for the first time when they take on No. 19 Gonzaga on Friday at 9 PM. Mark Neely and Corey Williams are on the call. Make sure to listen to Tim Healey and Kyle Dodd on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. The action can also be tracked via live stats.

Quotable
“Opportunities like this are why I transferred here," Moe Odum mentioned. "We can't wait to see the atmosphere at Desert Financial Arena. Gonzaga is a tremendous challenge, so we have to be ready to play our best for all 40 minutes."

Last time out
For the second consecutive contest, Arizona State (2-0) controlled the action and did not trail the entire contest in a 81-66 win over Utah Tech on Sunday. ASU's frontline was the storyline, with center Massamba Diop and forwards Allen Mukeba and Santiago Trouet dominating both ends of the floor. The Maroon and Gold were once again sparked by a fantastic effort from the substitutes, resulting in a decisive 25-8 advantage in bench points. The Sun Devils held the Trailblazers to 40% from the field and 30% on 3 PT FGs while also forcing 16 turnovers for the second consecutive game.

In both victories, four Sun Devils have scored in double figures. This afternoon, it was freshman Massamba Diop leading the way, showing off his entire skill set. He finished with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including a 2-for-2 mark behind the arc. Diop added six rebounds and two steals in 31 minutes of action. Redshirt sophomore Santiago Trouet responded with a fantastic game, registering his sixth career double-double (13 points and 10 rebounds). Senior guard Moe Odum provided 14 points of his own, while graduate transfer Allen Mukeba reached double figures (10 points) in under 20 minutes off the bench for the second straight game.

Sun Devil Men's Basketball vs Utah Tech Game Recap

Four-game Homestand
The matchup with Gonzaga represents the third leg of a four-game homestand for the Sun Devils to open the season. Arizona State is already 2-0 during the stretch, defeating Southern Utah and Utah Tech at Desert Financial Arena. After Gonzaga, ASU hosts Georgia State before hitting the road for the first time when they head to Hawai'i.

2-0 start
Arizona State is off to their sixth 2-0 start to the season under Bobby Hurley. It is the second consecutive year they have won their first two games. ASU also started 2-0 in the 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19, and 2022-23 seasons, three of which resulted in NCAA Tournament appearances.

Seeking a 3-0 start
The Sun Devils look to move to 3-0 on the season, which would be their best start since a 7-0 run to open the 2018-19 season. Should ASU claim the victory, it would be their third 3-0 start in the Bobby Hurley era.

Ranked wins in Hurley Era
Arizona State has won a total of 13 games against ranked teams since Bobby Hurley took over in 2015-16. Eight of those ranked wins have come in front of the home crowd in Tempe, including historic triumphs over No. 1 Kansas in 2018 and No. 3 UCLA in 2022.

T-Allen-ted
Graduate transfer forward Allen Mukeba has made a big splash during his short time as a Sun Devil. He has always been a double-double threat throughout his career, posting big scoring and rebounding numbers typically in a starting role. Mukeba has made a seamless transition to the bench, reaching double figures in a reserve role in both games so far this season. He is shooting a team-high 69.2% (9-of-13) from the field while adding nine rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.

Belgian shot blocker
Mukeba (a Charleroi, Belgium native) is solidifying his reputation as one of the premiere rim protectors in all of college basketball. Thanks to a four-block performance on opening night, Mukeba surpassed 100 blocks for his career. He is one of only 45 active NCAA Division I players to reach the milestone. Mukeba's 103 career blocks are tied for the 40th-most of any active NCAA Division I player. He is one of only 20 NCAA Division I players nationally with over 100 career blocks in under 90 career games (89).

Keeping it 100
Senior point guard Moe Odum played in his 100th career game at the Division I level in the win over Utah Tech. He made the most of the milestone, stuffing the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Odum's 7.0 assist/game is tied for 16th nationally and second in the Big 12 Conference. No active Sun Devil has played in more games at the Division I level.

Mo(r)e assists, less games
Odum is putting together one of the most productive passing careers in recent memory. Among active NCAA players at the Division I level, Odum's 532 assists are the THIRD most. He is the only active NCAA Division I player to have been credited with 500+ assists and have played in 100 games or less (100 career games).

Active NCAA Division I Players with 500+ career assists
1. Braden Smith, Purdue - 778 assists in 112 games
2. Themus Fulks, UCF - 593 assists in 114 games
3. Moe Odum, Arizona State - 532 assists in 100 games
4. Kerr Krisa, Cincinnati - 512 assists in 111 games
5. Donavan Dent, UCLA - 506 assists in 106 games

Proven Passer
Odum ranks near the top nationally in several significant career passing statistics, an indication of what a successful career he has had. Here is a closer look at where he stands nationally in several important categories:

---> 2.79 career assist/turnover ratio - 2nd nationally
---> 532 career assists - 3rd
---> 5.32 career assists/game - T7th

Bench boost
Arizona State has received tremendous contributions from their bench in both their wins to open the season. After claiming a 25-8 edge in bench points over Utah Tech, the Sun Devils now have a 60-22 (+38) advantage in the category this season.

Pushing the pace
Through two games, the Sun Devils have been one of the nation's best teams in transition. They boasted a 20-11 advantage in fast break points in the win over Utah Tech and have 20 or more fast break points in each of their first two games. ASU is averaging 22 fast break points, the 29th-best total in the nation.

Massamba making his mark
Freshman center Massamba Diop has been one of the most impressive freshman in the country through two games. In his first collegiate game, he was in the starting lineup, becoming just the ninth freshman in the Bobby Hurley era to earn the opening night start. He delivered for Coach Hurley with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, five rebounds, and three blocks in only 27 minutes of action in the win over Southern Utah.

Diop elevated his game even more in the second game of the season, scoring a game-high 18 points in the victory over Utah Tech. He added six rebounds and two steals while converting both of his three point attempts. Diop leads the Sun Devils in scoring after two games averaging 16 points a game.

Defending from Deep
Arizona State has held their first two opponents to a combined 13-of-55 from behind the arc. Teams are shooting a miniscule 23.6% from three-point range against the Sun Devils so far this season, the 38th-best mark in college basketball this season.

Dialed in from deep
Arizona State made 287 three-pointers last season, the fourth-most in program history. Four of the five most prolific three-point shooting seasons in program history have taken place in the Bobby Hurley era (328 in 2017, 288 in 2018, 274 in 2023). The Sun Devils made nine threes in each of their first two games, which is already ahead of their average (8.7) from last season.

Road warriors

They have five road games scheduled against teams ranked in the top-16 of the AP Preseason Poll. That includes trips to No. 2 Houston and No. 8 BYU in addition to a non-conference battle with UCLA in Los Angeles. ASU will also face Texas and several other programs knocking on the door of the preseason Top-25 away from home when they travel to the Maui Invitational.

Impact transfers
A six-man transfer class immediately bolstered the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball roster. It is one of the premier transfer classes in program history. Moe Odum finished fourth in the nation, averaging 7.5 assists per game last year. Marcus Adams Jr. was an All-Big West Second Team selection, while Allen Mukeba landed on the Second Team All-Horizon League. Adante’ Holiman earned All-Sun Belt Conference Third Team distinction. Santiago Trouet made a big jump at San Diego a season ago and has three years of eligibility remaining. Scottsdale native Bryce Ford returns to the Valley after a successful run at Toledo. Odum and Adams Jr. were both rated as four-star prospects by 247 Sports.

He has won 107 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (16), Nevada (13), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Jeff Pendergraph Hall of Fame
A cornerstone of the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program from 2005 to 2009, Ayres left an indelible mark on ASU Basketball. He was part of the 2025 Sun Devil Athletics Hall of Fame class. Over 126 games, he averaged 12.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an impressive 58 percent from the field. His senior season was his finest, as he led the nation in field goal percentage at 66 percent, averaged 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, and earned First-Team All-Pac-10 honors. Notably, he delivered a 31-point, 11-rebound performance in a decisive win over Stanford in January 2009.

Ayres ranks sixth all-time in scoring (1,588 points), second in rebounds (942), and his 2008-09 field goal percentage is the school record. He is the only player in program history to lead the team in rebounding four consecutive seasons and helped guide ASU to a 25-win campaign and NCAA Tournament berth in his senior year.

Following his collegiate career, Ayres was selected in the 2009 NBA Draft and went on to play six seasons in the NBA, including a championship run with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, before continuing his career overseas.

His consistency, leadership, and inside dominance made him a pillar during a pivotal era of transition for ASU basketball.
