TEMPE – Sun Devil Swimming Head Coach Herbie Behm has been named an assistant coach for USA Swimming ahead of the 2025 World Aquatics Championships being held in Singapore from July 26 to August 3.
Behm will assist the United States alongside Patrick Sammon and Jonny Kulow, who both qualified for the U.S. National Team last week at the national championships in Indianapolis. Sun Devil alum Dylan Gravley qualified for the national team in open water swimming last month.
"It’s an honor to represent Team USA and it’s a blessing to get to be on the team with Jonny and Patrick," said Behm. "They’ve both played such a huge role in developing a championship culture at ASU and I’m so excited to do the same thing with Team USA.”
In international competition, Behm has served as a coach on the USA and Puerto Rican national teams and mentored several athletes who won gold and silver medals at the Pan-American Games and swimmers who earned a total of 62 national final swims and broke a total of eight national records.
In his first season as the head coach for Arizona State, Behm navigated both men’s and women’s teams to their first Big 12 Championship and led the women’s team to their best finish at NCAAs since 2012. The Sun Devil alum led the men’s side to their fourth-consecutive top-10 finish at NCAAs and their third-straight conference championship. In addition, Behm was named Big 12 Coach of the Year for men's and women's swimming after winning the conference and guiding 15 Sun Devils to All-America honors last March.
Behm has mentored two-time Olympic medalist and Sun Devil junior Ilya Kharun during his time in the valley, who has won 11 conference championships and is a 13-time All-American. Kharun secured a gold medal at the short-course world championships in 2024 in the 200 fly.
