COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 20 Arizona State ice hockey team (1-1-0) fell in an overtime heartbreaker against Air Force (1-1-0) at Cadet Ice Arena on Saturday night.

The first period opened with two goals from the Sun Devils where Bennett Schimek started hot to earn his fourth goal of the weekend. The Maroon & Gold went scoreless until the last minute of the third period when Ryan Kirwan netted his first goal as a Sun Devil.

The Sun Devils return to Tempe next weekend, Oct. 11-12, where they'll face off against No. 7 Michigan. Puck drop on Friday is slated for 3:30 p.m. MST and can be streamed on NCHC.tv or heard on Sun Devil Hockey Radio Network, Fox Sports 910.

PERIOD BREAKDOWN
Period 1
27 seconds into the tilt, Bennett Schimek netted an unassisted goal to get the Sun Devils on the board first and bring his goal count of the weekend up to four. The maroon and gold were then on the man-advantage when Air Force committed an interference penalty. Seconds after the power play was over, Kyle Smolen secured the Sun Devils their second goal of the night from the top of the crease. Before the end of the period, Air Force was able to cut the lead in half, making the score 2-1.

Period 2
An Air Force penalty resulted in a Sun Devil power play but it didn't last long before Potter was called for slashing to go into 4-on-4 hockey. Half-way through the period, Air Force was able to tie the game 2-2. Two more penalties took place before the period concluded, with the Sun Devils entering the third on the kill.

Period 3
The Sun Devils were able to successfully kill the penalty at the start of the third and a stretch of back and forth broke out afterwards. After battling for almost the entirety of the third, the Sun Devils were finally able to take the lead with Ryan Kirwan's first goal as a Sun Devil with 58 seconds remaining. Air Force responded quickly in the last 27 seconds to tie the game 3-3.
